Percussionist from Savannah Georgia, born on the 24th of February, 1937.

Big Black was given this name by an older brother because of his interest in drums. After hearing the conga in Cuban music on the radio during his high school years, he became interested in the instrument and traveled to Florida and the Bahamas, where he spent a total of five years. There he played with Lord Flea's Calypso Band, studied with Fish Ray and Johnny 'Slick' Engraham and participated in the Calypso Eddy Trio and Sam Role. In Miami he worked with Jack Contanzo, Moe Koffman and the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra before forming a band with trumpeter Billy Cook and finding his own approach to fusing Caribbean and jazz rhythms.

In the 1960s he moved to New York City, where he played in the bands of Freddie Hubbard (Night of the Cookers) and Randy Weston and was also heard with Ray Bryant, Johnny Barracuda, Junior Cook and Eric Dolphy. In 1965 it was featured in the Caribbean Pavilion at the World's Fair; That same year he performed with Dizzy Gillespie at the Newport Jazz Festival. He received a record contract and released four of his own albums by 1972, some of which also included African rhythms. He was also a member of the Butterfield Blues Band. He later also worked as an actor in supporting roles in films such as Uptown Saturday Night, Blazing Saddles and Minus Man. He continued to play with Sun Ra and BB King, but also recorded with Charles Tolliver and played music during Muhammad Ali 's world championship fight in 1974. In the 1990s he was the musical director of several of Randy Weston's projects.

Christiaan Herbert 'Chris' Hinze (born June 30, 1938, Hilversum, Netherlands) is a Dutch jazz and New age flautist.

Chris Hinze Combination was presented internationally 1971 in the Casino at Lake Geneva during the Montreux Jazz Festival. From then on Chris Hinze went on the road all over Europe. Mainly American musicians joined the Combination, like John Lee, Gary Brown, Charlie Mariano, James Batton, Kevin Eubanks and many others. As the setting changed through the years, 'Combination' turned out to be an extremely apropriate name, since Hinze is always searching for new influences, interacting with musicians from other cultures, changing members of the Chris Hinze Combination for new tours and albums.

Michał Urbaniak (born January 22, 1943) is a Polish jazz musician who plays violin, lyricon, and saxophone. His music includes elements of folk music, rhythm and blues, hip hop, and symphonic music.

He was born in Warsaw, Poland. Urbaniak started his music education during high school in Łódź, Poland, and continued from 1961 in Warsaw in the violin class of Tadeusz Wroński. Learning to play on the alto saxophone alone, he first played in a Dixieland band, and later with Zbigniew Namysłowski[1] and the Jazz Rockers, with whom he performed during the Jazz Jamboree festival in 1961. After this, he was invited to play with Andrzej Trzaskowski, and toured the United States in 1962 with the Andrzej Trzaskowski band, the Wreckers, playing at festivals and clubs in Newport, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

After Urbaniak returned to Poland and the violin (which he abandoned for the saxophone during the time in Scandinavia), he created the Michał Urbaniak Group, to which he invited, among others, Urszula Dudziak (vocals), Adam Makowicz (piano), Pawel Jarzebski – bass and Czeslaw Bartkowski – drums

He has played with musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Marian McPartland, Paul Bley, #TaniaMaria, #StepsAhead, and #ChickCorea. He spent a total of eleven years with the Bill Evans Trio, which included performances in the United States, Europe and Asia, as well as dozens of recordings.

And remember the name Steps Ahead where Gomez was playing with, because my next album that I will post tomorrow is from them.

Brazilian singer and songwriter living in Japan.

Born: 17 October 1949 in São Paulo, Brazil.

Born in a wealthy family, she began to play the guitar at the age of six and refined her musicality by learning João Gilberto songs, eventually breaking out as a bossa nova singer as a teenager.

After contacting Lisa Ono's father, who ran a club in São Paulo, she moved to Japan making her debuting in 1970, being produced by saxophone player Sadao Watanabe. She sung in live performances with him.

Rosa soon met Yuji Ohno, who was playing the piano on a day when Watanabe couldn't appear. He led her into TV themes and commercial music work, and released seminal album 'Spiced With Brazil' (1974).

Since the latter half of the 1980s, she has been devoted to raising her children, but in response to the growing re-evaluation of her music, she released a new album 'Depois Do Nosso Tempo' (2006), produced by Miko DJ Taro.

Crossings is the tenth album by jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, released in 1972. It is the second album in his Mwandishi period, which saw him experimenting in electronics and funk with a sextet featuring saxophonist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, trombonist Julian Priester, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart. The album is the band's first to feature synthesizer player Patrick Gleeson. He was scheduled to 'set up his Moog for Hancock to play'. However, Hancock was so impressed with Gleeson that he 'asked Gleeson not only to do the overdubs on the album but join the group'.

João Bosco de Freitas Mucci, known professionally as João Bosco (Portuguese pronunciation) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist. In the 1970s he established his reputation in Brazilian popular music (Portuguese: 'Brazilian pop music') with lyricist Aldir Blanc.

Born on July 13, 1946, in Ponte Nova , Minas Gerais , Bosco's profession was engineering when he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where his songs were recorded by Elis Regina. In the introduction to his three-volume Songbook Dele, Almir Chediak wrote, 'Brilliant composer João Bosco's melodic and harmonic constructions are among the most auspicious in Brazilian music'.

Low Leaf is the long-running and multivalent project of Los Angeleno and multi-instrumentalist Angelica-Marie. Riding the wake of 2023’s Microdose—melding/channeling free jazz, astrology, hip-hop, eco-spirituality, and geo-political anger—Red Moon (out May 24th 2024 on Leaving Records) is a tight, three-song release, a snapshot of Low Leaf during an especially dynamic period.

Having received training in classical piano as a child, Low Leaf is equally adept as a self-taught guitarist, harpist, and producer. Indeed, these four elements (piano, guitar, harp, and beats/sound design)—their balance, fusion, and occasional clashings—constitute the project’s essential ingredients, though notably there is no guitar featured in Red Moon.

Brazilian group started out in the early 1970s as Grupo Seleção, a cover band. In 1973 they changed the band's name to Azymuth, inspired by a Marcos & Paulo Sérgio Valle song. (They also backed #MarcosValle on his Previsão Do Tempo album released in 1973.) In 1975 they released their first album, initially titled Azimüth. It featured the hit Linha Do Horizonte. In 1976 they scored another minor hit with Melô Da Cuíca ; Jazz Carnival, taken from the 1979 album Light As A Feather, was another hit, and 1980's Dear Limmertz also became a popular staple. The trio moved to the United States in the early 1980s, producing a number of albums that never came out in Brazil, and placing their bets on a mix of samba, funk and jazz that they defined as MPB-jazz (referring to Música Popular Brasileira). The main composer, keyboardist J. R. Bertrami, left the group in 1988, and was replaced by Jota Moraes and Marinho Boffa, but returned in the middle of the following decade, when the group signed with the label Far Out. After Bertrami died in 2012 keyboardist #KikoContinentino joined drummer Ivan 'Mamão' Conti and bassist Alex Malheiros to continue the band.

Caricatures is an album by American trumpeter Donald Byrd recorded and released on the Blue Note label in 1976. It was Byrd's final album for the label and his fifth straight release produced by Larry Mizell.

Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was one of the few hard bop musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd was an influence on the early career of Herbie Hancock and many others.

Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West is a live double album by the American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Miles Davis. It was recorded on April 10, 1970, at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, shortly after the release of the trumpeter's Bitches Brew album and the recording of Jack Johnson (1971). Black Beauty was produced by Teo Macero, Davis' longtime record producer. A jazz-rock and fusion album, Black Beauty captured one of Davis' first performances at a rock venue during the early stages of his electric period. At the concert, he led his band—saxophonist Steve Grossman, bassist Dave Holland, keyboardist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira—through one continuously performed set list which functioned as a musical suite for soloists to improvise throughout. He signaled changes from one piece to the next with phrases played on his trumpet.

Black Beauty was first released only in #Japan by CBS/Sony in 1973 without individual songs specified in the track listing. Columbia Records, Davis' American record label, had difficulty identifying the compositions for royalty purposes, and the album was not released in the United States until 1997. Critics were generally positive toward Black Beauty, although some were critical of its sound quality and Grossman's solos; Corea said the recording was an accurate document how that particular band of Davis' played live.

David Pritchard (born March 3, 1949) is an American acoustic, classical, and jazz guitarist.

Pritchard began studying classical guitar at the age of 12 but as a teenager his interest turned to jazz. As a high school student, he founded the jazz-rock group Quintet de Sade and at the age of 20 he joined the Gary Burton Quartet, replacing guitarist Jerry Hahn. In 1970, he co-founded, along with pianist/composer Pete Robinson, the jazz-fusion group Contraband. Several years followed where he freelanced in the Los Angeles area while also teaching at the Dick Grove School of Music. In 1978 he recorded his first album as a leader, Lightyear, followed a year later by City Dreams, featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Patrice Rushen, drummer Chester Thompson, and bassist/producer Larry Klein.

Mandrake or Mandrake Som, pseudonym of Ivanir do Nascimento (Guaratinguetá, May 21, 1934 – Rome, September 8, 1988), was a Brazilian singer and percussionist naturalized Italian, active in Italy since the late 1950s.

The nickname comes from his participation in a Brazilian television program in 1959 in which Enrico Simonetti took part as conductor and arranger: during an episode dedicated to magic, Ivanir do Nascimento, being the only member of the orchestra with a moustache, impersonated the magician Mandrake, later taking his name definitively. Mandrake takes part in shows and recordings with internationally renowned artists such as Jair Rodrigues, Elis Regina, João Gilberto, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque, Vinícius de Moraes, Wilson Simonal, Carlos Piper, Roberto Carlos Braga, Gal Costa.

Barbara Ann 'Bobbi' Humphrey (born April 25, 1950) is an American jazz flautist and singer. She has recorded twelve albums over the course of her career, mostly playing jazz fusion, funk, and soul-jazz. In 1971, she was the first female instrumentalist signed by Blue Note and in 1994, she founded the jazz label Paradise Sounds Records.

Satin Doll is the fourth studio album by American jazz flautist Bobbi Humphrey recorded in 1974 and released on the Blue Note label.

Satin Doll Review by Andrew Hamilton

Named after Duke Ellington's classic 'Satin Doll' -- which producers Fonce Mizell and Freddie Perren give a '70s feel here - this delightful LP is further indication of Bobbi Humphrey's God-given gifts.

They are four sisters who came from Ibirataia, Bahia, Brazil, and had given this name 'Quarteto Em Cy' ('Cy Four'/'Four In Cy') by Vinícius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra because of their names: Cyva, Cynara, Cybele and Cylene.

Their current formation is: Cyva, Cynara, Keyla Fogaça and Corina Viana.

They also joined with MPB-4 to form 'Octeto' ('Octet').

When they presented themselves to USA, they were known as 'The Girls From Bahia'.

They started performing in 1959, appearing on local television in that year. Cyva, the leader of the group, then moved to Rio de Janeiro, and persuaded her three sisters to join her there. They then started to make regular appearances in the boates (small nightclubs) of Rio, particularly Bottle's bar and the legendary Zum-Zum, where they caught the attention of Vinicius de Moraes and other prominent figures of the bossa nova scene. Their first album was released in 1964, and was to be followed by regular releases up to the late '90s, at the frequency of one a year, and sometimes more. Connoisseurs of MPB and tropicalia have a particular regard for the first few years of their recording career, when they were signed to Brazil's most daring label, Elenco.

José Eduardo Pinto Nazário (São Paulo, September 25, 1952) is a Brazilian drummer and percussionist. In 1977 he formed #GrupoUm with Rodolfo Stroeter on bass and Lelo Nazário on piano, moving decisively towards Free-jazz. Invited to be part of Egberto Gismonti 's group, he recorded the album Nó Caipira by the composer from Rio de Janeiro alongside Mauro Senize and Zeca Assumpção in 1978.

Laidback fusion from guitarist Walt Barr | a small group session that never goes full-on, and instead kicks it back with a nice soulful finish! Walt plays a well-recorded electric on the set | in a group that includes Roy Braverman on keyboards, and lots of sweet smooth production -- almost in a west coast studio mode, but a bit more open-handed.

This is an album of great virtuosity which I believe would be enjoyed even by the most vociferous detractor from so-called 'new' directions in music. The attributes of these men need no elaboration here. This is adventurous, exciting, innovative and accessible, all at the same time.

Steve Grossman (born January 18, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York City; died in Glen Cove, N.Y., August 13, 2020) is a jazz saxophonist who started in jazz fusion, but is most known for hard bop. He performed & recorded with #MilesDavis and Elvin Jones.

His first record 'ome Shapes To Come'was released in 1974.

Gene Perla (born March 1, 1940) is an American jazz bassist. In 1975 he started the band Stone Alliance with Don Alias and Steve Grossman. Also in the 1970s he founded PM Records ('PM' for Perla Music), which released albums by Steve Grossman, Elvin Jones, Pat LaBarbera, and Dave Liebman. He has taught at Lehigh University and the New School of Jazz & Contemporary Music.

Charles 'Don'Alias (December 25, 1939 – March 28, 2006) was an American jazz percussionist. Alias was best known for playing congas and other hand drums. He was, however, a capable drum kit performer, for example, Alias played drums on the song 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down' from trumpeter Miles Davis's album Bitches Brew (1969) when neither Lenny White nor #JackDeJohnette was able to play the marching band-inspired rhythm requested by Davis.

Radio Free Albemuth is the debut solo album by bassist Stuart Hamm, released in 1988 on Relativity Records. Hamm is backed up by guitarists Allan Holdsworth and Joe Satriani. The title of the album and many of the songs were inspired by the novels of Philip K. Dick.

Stuart Hamm (born February 8, 1960) is an American bass guitar player, known for his session and live work with numerous artists as well as for his unconventional playing style and solo recordings.

Born in New Orleans, Hamm spent his childhood and youth in Champaign, Illinois, where he studied bass and piano, played in the stage band at Champaign Central High School, and was selected to the Illinois All-State Band. Hamm graduated from Hanover High in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1978, while living in Norwich, Vermont. Following high school, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he met guitarist Steve Vai and, through him, met Joe Satriani. Hamm played bass on Vai's debut solo album, Flex-Able, which was released in 1984.

Brazilian keyboardist and songwriter (Cachoeiro do Itapemirim - ES, 1947/ Lisboa - Portugal, 2020). A prodigious child, Marcos Resende learned to play the accordion at the age of two, and taught himself the piano at six. In spite of his immense potential to become a musician he travelled to Lisbon in the 60s to study medicine, though he continued to explore his musical passion on the side, forming a trio which ended up opening for Dexter Gordon at the Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971. From here he formed the electronic oriented prog-jazz group Status, who opened shows for the likes of Elton John, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but in spite of their relative live success they have no known recordings.

Nivaldo Lima Ornelas (Belo Horizonte, April 22, 1941) is a Brazilian saxophonist, flutist, composer and arranger.

Rashied Ali, born Robert Patterson (July 1, 1933 – August 12, 2009) was an American free jazz and avant-garde drummer who was best known for performing with John Coltrane in the last years of Coltrane's life.

New Directions in Modern Music is a live album by the Rashied Ali Quartet. It was recorded at The East in Brooklyn, New York, during 1971, and was released in 1973 by Ali's Survival Records. On the album, Ali is featured on drums and percussion, and is joined by saxophonist and flutist Carlos Ward, pianist Fred Simmons, and bassist Stafford James. In 1999, the recording was reissued by Survival in conjunction with Knit Classics.

Ali, who replaced Elvin Jones in John Coltrane's band, formed this quartet after Coltrane's death. On this session Fred Simmons was standing in for the regular pianist, Don Pullen. The style of musically carried on from where Coltrane left off - high energy stuff, with lots of drumming and long solos.

Raymundo 'Ray' Barretto Pagán (April 29, 1929 – February 17, 2006) was an American percussionist and bandleader of Puerto Rican descent. Throughout his career as a percussionist, he played a wide variety of Latin music styles, as well as Latin jazz. His first hit, 'El Watusi', was recorded by his Charanga Moderna in 1962, becoming the most successful pachanga song in the United States. In the late 1960s, Barretto became one of the leading exponents of boogaloo and what would later be known as salsa. Nonetheless, many of Barretto's recordings would remain rooted in more traditional genres such as son cubano. A master of the descarga (improvised jam session), Barretto was a long-time member of the Fania All-Stars.
