Le martin-pêcheur se nourrit principalement de poissons pris depuis un perchoir au-dessus de l'eau. L'oiseau reste posé pendant de longs moments, regardant attentivement l'eau à la recherche de proies, tournant et inclinant la tête et le corps. Quand la proie est détectée, il plonge à pic et capture le poisson sous l'eau, pouvant aller jusqu'à un mètre de profondeur. Ensuite, utilisant ses ailes, il se propulse vers la surface et s'élève, le bec tendu vers le ciel, et retourne sur son perchoir.

The kingfisher feeds mainly on fish caught from a perch above the water. The bird remains resting for long periods of time, looking carefully at the water for prey, turning and tilting the head and body. When the prey is detected, it plunges sharply and captures the fish under water, up to one meter deep. Then, using its wings, it propels itself towards the surface and rises, the beak stretched towards the sky, and returns on its perch.

J'ai des fois des petits fantasmes photographiques. Il parait que c'est normal après tant d'années passées en photo. Ceux-ci prennent toutes sortes de formes sur toutes sortes de sujets.
Lors d'une promenade dans le boisé Ste-Dorothée à la recherche de cette lapone élusive, je me suis arrêté devant plusieurs tableaux d'hiver splendides, composés de branches ployant sous leur charge de neige que le soleil en contre-jour illuminait. Mais, il manquait un sujet central. C'est en faisant la revue de ces paysages que l'idée m'est venue d'incruster un harfang pris ultérieurement. Ce serait assez étonnant d'en retrouver un en sous-bois. Mais, la nature est pleine de surprise...
My photographic fantasies sometimes take me to strange places - not surprising after spending so much time in the medium. During one of my walks in a local wood on a quest for the elusive Great Gray, I was struck by the beauty of the surroundings. Branches heavily laden with freshly fallen snow backlit by a generous sun were offering several wide-angle opportunities. Upon review, I felt I was lacking a central subject the eye of the reader could focus on. So I decided to insert this snowy I had taken earlier. It would be uncommon and surprising to stumble upon such a scene. But, nature is full of surprises...

Schon wieder Geschichte ist der FLX 1358 von München HBF nach Hamburg HBF. Bei der Hintergrund-Recherche zu meinem Bild vom 21. August 2022 aus Breitenfurt, welches besagte Verbindung geführt von der für die IGE im Einsatz stehenden 182 515 zeigt, stellte sich heraus, das Flixtrain kurz darauf das Zugangebot von und nach München sang- und klanglos einstellte. Auch für 2023 sind keine Verkehre in Bayern vorgesehen. So bin ich froh über dieses Foto, welches ein Comeback des planmäßigen Fernverkehrs durch das Altmühltal dokumentiert, auch wenn es nur wenige Wochen währte.
FLX 1358 from Munich main station to Hamburg main station is history again. When researching the background to my picture of 21 August 2022 from Breitenfurt, which shows the said connection led by 182 515 in service for IGE, it turned out that Flixtrain discontinued the train service to and from Munich shortly afterwards without a sound. No services in Bavaria are planned for 2023 either. So I am glad about this photo, which documents a comeback of regular long-distance traffic through the Altmühltal, even if it only lasted a few weeks.
Recherche Bay, an embayment of the Tasman Sea in the extreme south-eastern corner of Tasmania, Australia. This is as far south as you can drive in Tasmania. The place is named after the Recherche, a ship of the French Navy that took part in an expedition exploring the Australian coast in 1792.

L’observatoire de la ville a été commandé par l’Astronomical Institution (fondée en 1812). Ils souhaitaient construire un observatoire qui pourrait être utilisé pour la recherche scientifique, former une base pour la mise en place d’un service de temps public précis pour Édimbourg et Leith, et créer un « observatoire populaire » où les membres de l’institution pourraient aller pour mener leurs propres expériences et recherches.
The city observatory was commissioned by the Astronomical Institution (founded in 1812). They wanted to build an observatory which could be used for scientific research, form a basis for the establishment of an accurate public time service for Edinburgh and Leith, and create a 'people's observatory' where members of the institution could go to conduct their own experiments and research.

Le gisement d’étain de la région d’Abbaretz a fait l’objet d’exploitations très anciennes, dès l’époque gallo-romaine. Mais c’est au début du 20ème siècle que d’importants travaux de recherche ont débuté par la société nantaise des Minerais de l’Ouest (SNMO). L’exploitation principale a été réalisée à ciel ouvert sur le site du Bois Vert à l’ouest du bourg d’Abbaretz à partir de 1952. La mine à ciel ouvert a atteint des profondeurs allant de 40 à 70 m. Lors de l’exploitation, les matériaux extraits à la pelle mécanique étaient transportés par bandes transporteuses soit au nord de la route départementale directement lorsqu’il s’agit de roche de découverte ou de minerai trop pauvre en étai, soit dans l’usine de traitement du minerai. Dans l’usine, le minerai était concassé et broyé pour récupérer l’étain. Une fois ce dernier récupéré, les résidus de traitement étaient envoyés dans des grandes aires de décantation au nord de la route départementale. Cette activité a généré les terrils du Bois Vert visibles aujourd’hui : le terril conique composé de stériles d’exploitation (matériaux plus ou moins grossiers, moins chargés en métaux) et les terrils tabulaires en forme de plateaux composés de résidus de traitement (matériaux plus fins de type sable, plus chargés en métaux). L’étude menée récemment par le BRGM conclut à une concentration relativement importante en métaux dans les sols (arsenic notamment) présente dans les résidus des anciennes activités de traitement du minerai. Cette zone ayant donné lieu à une exploitation minière dans le passé contient naturellement des teneurs en métaux plus élevées que la moyenne de terres initialement chargées en métaux. Ce rapport indique qu’en dehors d’une promenade le long du chemin de randonnée et sur la montée au belvédère du terril conique, les autres usages ne sont pas compatibles avec le site.
The tin deposit in the Abbaretz region has been exploited for a very long time, since the Gallo-Roman period. But it was at the beginning of the 20th century that important research work began by the Nantes company of West Minerals (SNMO). The main mining was carried out in the open pit at the Bois Vert site to the west of the village of Abbaretz from 1952. The open pit mine reached depths ranging from 40 to 70 m. During operation, the materials extracted with a mechanical shovel were transported by conveyor belts either to the north of the departmental road directly in the case of discovery rock or ore too poor in prop, or to the plant of ore processing. At the plant, the ore was crushed and ground to recover the tin. Once the latter was recovered, the treatment residues were sent to large settling areas north of the departmental road. This activity generated the Bois Vert slag heaps visible today: the conical slag heap made up of waste rock (more or less coarse materials, less loaded with metals) and the tabular slag heaps in the form of trays made up of treatment residues ( finer sand type, more loaded with metals). The recent study carried out by BRGM concludes that there is a relatively high concentration of metals in the soils (arsenic in particular) present in the residues of former ore processing activities. This area, which has been used for mining in the past, naturally contains higher metal contents than the average for soil initially loaded with metals. This report indicates that apart from a walk along the hiking trail and on the climb to the conical slag heap lookout, other uses are not compatible with the site.

[...] La semaine dernière, à la recherche de nouveaux spots en Finistère, j'ai fais connaissance avec une côte sauvage aux décors fantasques.
Après avoir découvert un "geyser breton", c'est 50km plus loin qu'un second a pointé le bout de son nez. Avec force et détonation, les vagues sont propulsées aléatoirement à plusieurs mètres de là où elles viennent de s'échouer. Et se retrouver à quelques centimètres du propulseur garantie une douche aussi bien fraîche que mémorable.

Travel as far south as the road goes and you will reach Recherche Bay, along with Cockle Creek. Colonial history included some attempts at mining and timber felling and whaling. Now protected, nature has restored its beauty and it can now be enjoyed by all who travel to the end of the road.

D'habitide, j'aime bien intégrer du contexte urbain dans mes photos de peintures murales mais celle-ci valait bien aussi une version "zoom-in".
Mural "Gabriel Ottelet" par l'artiste espagnol Dridali (Adrián Mateo) à l'angle des rues Brunehaut et Ottelet à Mesvin (Mons).
Dridali est basé à Valence. Sa spécialité, ce sont les visages de personnes au style hyperréaliste et sa technique est le spray, une technique très polyvalente et durable.
Mesvin a été le théatre d’un courage hors du commun, celui de Gabriel Ottelet, résistant durant la Guerre 1940-45. Après avoir abattu un officier allemand, il s'était réfugié dans le grenier du facteur de Mesvin (dans cette même maison qui porte aujourd'hui le mural), ignorant que celui-ci était, lui aussi, recherché par les allemands pour une fraude au niveau des tickets de rationnement. Pensant que les allemands venaient pour lui, Gabriel Ottelet s'echappa par les toits mais fut abattu par une sentinelle le 5 juin 1944.

I usually like to integrate some urban context into my photos of murals but I thought this one also deserved a "zoom-in" version.
Mural "Gabriel Ottelet" by the Spanish artist Dridali (Adrián Mateo) at the corner of rue Brunehaut and Ottelet in Mesvin (Mons).
Dridali is based in Valencia. His specialty consists in drawing poeple's faces in a hyper-realistic style and in spray technique, a very versatile and durable technique.
Mesvin was the scene of extraordinary courage, that of Gabriel Ottelet, resistance fighter during the 1940-45 War. After having killed a German officer, he took refuge in the attic of the postman of Mesvin (in the same house which today bears the mural), unaware that he too was wanted by the Germans for fraud of ration tickets. Thinking that the Germans were coming for him, Gabriel Ottelet escaped over the roofs but was shot dead by a sentry on June 5, 1944.

This place is very important for me. I shot this picture near Braives in Belgium. (I edited
it to get better lights effects, better symmetry, better depth...) I personally believe
