Recherche Bay, an embayment of the Tasman Sea in the extreme south-eastern corner of Tasmania, Australia. This is as far south as you can drive in Tasmania. The place is named after the Recherche, a ship of the French Navy that took part in an expedition exploring the Australian coast in 1792.

[FR] Les signaux visuels basé sur la couleur est un aspect important de la communication chez plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux. Chez les tétraonidés un de ces signaux est le peigne superciliaire, cet ornement formé de peau qui se gonfle chez le mâle durant la pariade en raison de l’augmentation du flux sanguin vers les tissus. Des recherches ont démontré qu’il y aurait une corrélation positive entre la grandeur mesuré des peignes, du niveau de testostérone et du succès copulatoire. Par contre il n’y aurait pas de de corrélation entre la dimensions observé des peignes et les comportement de combats entre mâles. Ceux-ci rétractant leurs peignes durant les affrontement probablement pour protéger cet attribut.

Le printemps est déjà bien avancé, et ce magnifique Pic maculé est toujours à la recherche d'une compagne. Il a adopté, à notre grand malheur, une des perches de cèdre sec que j'utilise pour suspendre mes mangeoires d'oiseaux. C'est bien connu, ce pic va tambouriner sur n'importe quoi qui a une bonne résonance à son goût et qui est très exposé pour essayer d'attirer une femelle sur son territoire et fonder une famille durant la belle saison. À ma résidence de Duhamel, il y avait aussi un de ces mâles super persévérants. Lui, il avait adopté la gouttière en aluminium juste au-dessus de notre fenêtre de chambre à coucher. Il croyait fermement que le son était ce qui séduirait une femelle. Celui-ci aime la perche sec de cèdre qui est aussi, malheureusement, située à moins de 10 pieds de notre fenêtre de chambre à coucher aussi. Les Pic maculé sont des lèves tôt, et ils sont très persévérants. Ils reviennent jour après jour tambouriner sur leur instrument favori et même plusieurs fois par jour, presque à des heures identiques, au grand désarroi de mon épouse. Il faut dire qu'il commence sa routine vers 05h30 du matin, et nous dormons la fenêtre ouverte. Le voici donc sur la perche alors qu'il fait une pause pour écouter et regarder si son appel a eu du succès...

It is well known that this woodpecker will drum on anything that has a good resonance to its taste and that is very exposed to try to attract a female to its territory and start a family during the summer. At my residence in Duhamel, there was also one of these super persistent males. He had adopted the aluminum gutter just above our bedroom window. He firmly believed that sound was what would seduce a female. This one likes the dry cedar perch which is also, unfortunately, located less than 10 feet from our bedroom window as well. The Yellow-bellied Woodpeckers are early risers, and they are very persistent. They come back day after day to drum on their favorite instrument and even several times a day, almost at the same time, much to my wife's dismay. It must be said that he begins his routine around 5:30 in the morning, and we sleep with the window open. So here he is on the perch while he pauses to listen and see if his call has been successful...
