Aside from the bouquets, this is probably my favourite craft of the wedding.
We weren't going to have a wedding cake. We were just going to have a dessert buffet and that was that. But then... I saw this on Offbeat Bride and decided I must crochet a cake. So I searched and found this pattern, and then modified it to my liking.
The leaves are fused batik printed fabric, simply cut into leave shapes, and the flowers are storebought silk flowers. I had originally wanted to crochet flowers, but I didn't like the way any of my flowers turned out. And then given that I had left this cake until literally the night before we had to travel to Toronto, I gave up on crocheted flowers and subbed in silk flowers. The cake toppers are also made by me, and for you video gamers out there, you'll recognize them as Sackpeople from Little Big Planet. I made the pattern myself because I didn't like any of the patterns I found online. A couple eco-cool tidbits: The eyes are buttons from Value Village, and I stuffed them with napkins that were going to be thrown in the garbage due to the fact that they left sparkles on people's faces when they tried to use 'em.

I am so impressed with the way these bouquets turn out. I'm sure it seems like I'm bragging about them, but I'm not. I just don't really think of myself as a terribly crafty person, so it amazes me that I can make something I think is beautiful. And they're made from repurposed materials (i.e. diverted from the trash stream), which is cool to begin with. But furthermore, they're made from filter papers from the lab and Kyle and I both worked in before starting our PhDs. So they even have sentimental value. aaaawww... (I made the roses based of a modified version of this tutorial on Coffee Filter Roses).
Thanks to Alyson Laframboise and Erin McCarthy for the Bombay Sapphire bottles. Thanks to Sarah Tremain & Allison Mistakidis for getting us a full gin bottle - unfortunately we didn't drink it all in time so weren't able to use it, but we had enough for the head table so it's all good.
