Christopher L. Barrett, Executive Director, Virginia Bioinformatics Institute/Professor of Computer Science, Virginia Tech. Dr. Barrett’s talk entitled “Massively Interactive Systems: Thinking and Deciding in the Age of Big Data"

Abstract: This talk discusses advanced computationally assisted reasoning about large interaction-dominated systems. Current questions in science, from the biochemical foundations of life to the scale of the world economy, involve details of huge numbers and levels of intricate interactions. Subtle indirect causal connections and vastly extended definitions of system boundaries dominate the immediate future of scientific research. Beyond sheer numbers of details and interactions, the systems are variously layered and structured in ways perhaps best described as networks. Interactions include, and often co-create, these morphological and dynamical features, which can interact in their own right. Such “massively interacting” systems are characterized by, among other things, large amounts of data and branching behaviors. Although the amount of associated data is large, the systems do not even begin to explore their entire phase spaces. Their study is characterized by advanced computational methods. Major methodological revisions seem to be indicated.

Heretofore unavailable and rapidly growing basic source data and increasingly powerful computing resources drive complex system science toward unprecedented detail and scale. There is no obvious reason for this direction in science to change. The cost of acquiring data has historically dominated scientific costs and shaped the research environment in terms of approaches and even questions. In the several years, as the costs of social data, biological data and physical data have plummeted on a per-unit basis and as the volume of data is growing exponentially, the cost drivers for scientific research have clearly shifted from data generation to storage and analytical computation-based methods. The research environment is rapidly being reshaped by this change and, in particular, the social and bio–sciences are revolutionized by it. Moreover, the study of socially– and biologically–coupled systems (e.g., societal infrastructures and infectious disease public health policy analysis) is in flux as computation-based methods begin to greatly expand the scope of traditional problems in revolutionary ways.

How does this situation serve to guide the development of “information portal technology” for complex system science and for decision support? An example of an approach to detailed computational analysis of social and behavioral interaction with physical and infrastructure effects in the immediate aftermath of a devastating disaster will be described in this context.

Promoting Model-Based Reasoning through Computational Modeling and Simulation Practices

Alejandra Magana

W.C. Furnas Professor in Enterprise Excellence in the Department of Computer and Information Technology at Purdue University

Modern science and engineering workplaces now use modeling and simulation practices coupled with computational tools to aid in the analysis and design of systems. In light of the integration of these practices in the workplace, science and engineering educators have started to identify the breadth and depth of computation, data science, and modeling and simulation skills needed by the 21st Century STEM workforce. This agenda establishes an integrated evidence-based program of research and education centered on how people develop model-based reasoning through authentic modeling and simulation practices in science and engineering, and to use this knowledge to develop strategies that will prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers to be capable of addressing complex interdisciplinary problems. Through a series of comprehensive qualitative and quantitative research studies we attempt to understand (i) How can faculty support student model-based reasoning using computational tools? and (ii) How can students develop computational adaptive expertise?

Step-by-Step Reasoning:

1.Contextual Background:

•In 1916, British Empire forces were heavily deployed in Egypt as part of the defence of the Suez Canal and preparation for campaigns in Sinai and Palestine against the Ottoman Empire.

•Various British divisions, including Scottish regiments, were stationed or moved through Cairo and the surrounding area.

2.Relevant Scottish Regiments Present in Egypt circa 1916:

•The 52nd (Lowland) Division was in Egypt from January 1916.

•The 4th and 7th Battalions of The Royal Scots (Royal Regiment) moved to Egypt in January 1916 after Gallipoli and were stationed protecting the Suez Canal area.

•The Scottish Horse regiments were in Egypt by early 1916, initially recuperating near Cairo and then defending the Suez Canal’s eastern approaches. They were dismounted cavalry at this point.

•Other Scottish units like the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and Lovat Scouts served in the region, but many were transferred later in 1916.

3.Association with Cairo and the Sphinx:

•The Scottish Horse regiments are explicitly described as having recuperated close to Cairo (near the pyramids and Sphinx).

•The 1st Battalion Scots Guards were stationed at Kasr-el-Nil barracks in Cairo before the war and may have had presence in Cairo, but their direct relation to 1916 near the Sphinx is less specific.

•The Royal Scots (4th and 7th Battalions) were in Egypt protecting the canal during early 1916 and could be pictured in Cairo.

4.Most Likely Regiment:

•Based on detailed historical records, the Scottish Horse regiments were stationed near Cairo in early 1916, close to the pyramids and Sphinx, notably before deploying to defensive positions at the Suez Canal.

•Photographic and anecdotal evidence connects Scottish Horse units to Cairo and the iconic sites during that period.

•The Scottish Horse was a distinct, well-recognized Scottish unit serving in Egypt at the crucial time frame stated.

Final Answer:

The Scottish Horse regiment is the most likely Scottish regiment depicted in front of the Sphinx in Cairo around 1916.

________________________________________

Summary:

•Multiple Scottish units were in Egypt in 1916, but the Scottish Horse, a cavalry regiment dismounted and stationed near Cairo, is strongly linked with the area around the Sphinx.

•The Royal Scots and Scots Guards were also present but either less directly associated with that precise location or period.

Therefore, the Scottish Horse regiment is the best-supported answer for the "Scottish regiment in front of the Sphinx in Cairo, circa

Want to create a retail area in your salon but aren’t sure the best way to go about it? Or maybe you’re struggling for space and don’t know how to incorporate retail into your existing space?

Whatever your dilemma, our retail expert Matthew Lutos, managing director of Beauty Planet Salon Designs, has the answers. Here he tackles some of the most common questions when it comes to creating a salon retail area…

I have an existing salon retail area that is not doing particularly well, but I don’t have a huge amount of stock. Could this be the reason why are stock levels that important?

Absolutely – stock levels are a major factor and you should always have your retail area well stocked with a wide variety of different professional products to choose from. It is really important that you look like you are open for business and that you have the image of a professional retailer. You are never going to achieve this unless you are well stocked up.

Reasoning With Regulations

Red ceramic piece. I'm hooked, so many ideas....

But regardless of the poor reasoning behind my purchase, I read The Mourning Star, by Kazimir Strzepek, while waiting for my flight, and it was AWESOME! Seriously, this book is a must-read for any of you who dig the indie anything. I don't even think I can do it justice with a description--but I was hooked just on the strength of the introduction. So, so good. We'll try and get some for the store, but don't wait for us: run-don't-walk to the Bodega site and pick it up! And tell them that Heroes sent you, please! I want these guys to come next year, and it's tough for smaller outfits to travel sometimes, as it can be pretty expensive. So send them your money, friend and neighbors! I personally guarantee the quality of this book!

Yayoi was born in Osaka Japan.. Her reasoning behind sculpting the feet is that without feet there is no way to move forward without first moving ones feet. I'm not sure if her reasoning translates in a way we understand as she also claims her understanding of English is 'limited'.

I think she means that feet give us the ability to travel, meet others and communicate. Sounds reasonable to me.

The increasing complexity of software applications and architectures in Internet services challenge the reasoning of operators tasked with diagnosing and resolving outages and degradations as they arise. This talk will give a glimpse into how other fields handle incident response and paint a picture of what active steps we can take to support engineers in those uncertain and ambiguous scenarios. Examples include fields such as military, surgical trauma units, space transportation, aviation and air traffic control, and wildland firefighting.

Despite higher focus on how failures can be prevented through more robust and fault-tolerant design of these systems, a dearth of research explores the cognitive challenges engineers face when those preventative designs fail and they are left to think and react to scenarios that hadn’t been imagined, much like in fields outside of technology.

I was trying to come up with a title for this photo and then "Old age food" hit me and I thought it was perfect. The reasoning for that being:

We have a pet rabbit (not this guy of course, this is a wild Rabbit at Shenandoah National Park). We got our pet rabbit (who we named Jack) about 6 years ago and he was 2 years old then making him 8 years old now. When we got him the pet store workers said that rabbits of his breed will live to be 4-6 years old. Woops! Not for Jack! He is already 2 years older than the higher number of his life expectancy. And I think one of the reasons that he is lived so long is because we feed Jack a lot of grass (just like what this wild bunny is eating), and he is kept outside where he got lots of sunlight. Since this rabbit was in the sunlight and was eating grass, he reminded me of Jack and how Jack has lived so old, so now you get the idea of the title.

Anyway, it was quite fun photographing this rabbit at SNP, he let me get much closer to him than I ever have to any other wild rabbit and at one point I was about 6 feet away and he decided to run right toward me! In panic mode, my instinct told me to run back and that spooked the bunny and it retreated off into the brush. Had I stood still I think he would have ran right between my legs!

I still haven't figured out why he was letting me get so close and then running at my like that. Does anyone know if rabbits can carry rabies and if so, does the behavior I am describing sound like what a rabid rabbit would preform? I didn't think it was rabid but I just wondered because of the way he was acting.

I have a small salon and don’t have the space for retail. Any suggestions?

It’s more important to consider what you will do with your limited space. Often a metre wide will be enough! The important thing is to think about the environment you are creating- it is far more beneficial to have a small one metre retail area that works for you than a large area that doesn’t shift stock.

A custom built unit is obviously best. Olymp do some stunning retail units that can be made to measure, or if you’re on a budget and want to use an existing unit then think about how you can make a feature of the area through lighting. LED lights are inexpensive now and make a big difference to retail units- they really give the space its own identity.
