Village near Siem Reap - Cambogia

Cambodia, Siem Reap

The once verdant cornfields around here, the few that remain anyway, have withered into parched leaves and bone-dry stalks. They emanate eerie rustling sounds in response to even the slightest breeze. This is my favorite time of the growing season, even though it's the end phase. The visuals are simultaneously creepy and amazing. Yet I feel an odd sense of anxiety every time I hear a harvesting combine rumbling past the house. I always wonder if they are heading to one of the cornfields that I photograph. I have this completely unhinged sense of ownership for the fields I visit. The same feelings often develop around abandoned houses that I explore. For me it's a recurrent storyline that never ends well. Sooner or later I return to find only emptiness. The harvest is now over, but the emotion and even terror that played out here for me these past months lingers.

Continuing my farm series taken during late summer through fall harvest...with development and other encroachment on lands previously used for farming, all spaces and open areas are increasingly used for production in local farms. Land cost in congested living areas are at a premium and small farms find trouble competing. Some studies have theorized small farms may disappear from all congested living areas in the United States as cost to produce for agriculture is hard to compare with the cost for land use in doing so.

There's a lot of that happening politically these days.

A later find and possible for the Halloween/Day of the Dead for SSC this week - but the original Pumpkins won out even though today is " The Day of the Dead " .

Spotted this outside a house opposite the shops in the village , the little headstone was only about a foot high .

Obviously this calls for a bit of Blue Oyster Cult ---------

Happy Halloween!! (almost)

I've had this idea in my head for literally months, so I'm pretty excited to have it exist, and in time for Halloween, even.

I should've been doing an ecology assignment instead of editing this... Too late now. That's what tomorrow morning is for, really.

Facebook.

I'll put up a before/after on Facebook soon!

Before and after is officially up on my Facebook.

Northumberland, England.

As it turns out, may hair is a bit too layered to pull of the Katniss braid, but that didn't stop me from sporting her Reaping braids when we went to see The Hunger Games yesterday.

Kampong Phluk is a commune in Prasat Bakong District in Siem Reap Province Cambodia. The name means "Harbor of the Tusks". The community largely depends on fishing for survival, spending Cambodia's wet season (May-October) fishing. During the dry season (November-April) as the river thins due to receding water, many turn to farming to supplement their income. Tourism, which started in the village approximately 10 years ago, is also a growing part of the local economy.

As of 2019, the commune has 911 families with a total population of 3,707. The commune consist of three villages: Tnaot Kambot, Dey Krahom and Kok Kdol.

The village is on the Tonlé Sap which is a seasonally inundated freshwater lake, Tonlé Sap Lake, and an attached river, the 120 km long Tonlé Sap River, that connects the lake to the Mekong River. Wikipedia

The muddy river is the Tahas River which flows through the Kampong Phluk village.

A mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Wikipedia
