My latest view of Miami and Brickell's Financial District photographed from Key Biscayne.
It is an HDR kinda processed image with the last frame exposed at 149s to bring drama into the image with the running clouds. I selected three frames exposed at different times during dusk, to work with in the processing. Too long of a story.
As always, very sorry for the obvious watermark stamp. I dislike it tremendously too. It's just necessary commercial protection.

This woman and her friends were told to pack up their homeless camp and find somewhere else to live. Many folks in these camps just don't care any longer and leave refuse and used needles everywhere. And some like her, seem to be trying to make the best of a situation and will even clean up when being told to leave.
Politicians in Canada's federal government, British Columbia's provincial government, and the City of Vancouver all think that building condos and getting ultra wealthy foreign buyers to buy up all the property and jack up home prices is the best way to drive the economy. The Canadian minister for housing even said exactly this in statements made to mainstream media.
On paper it looks good economically, like we are competitive. On the books a lot of money is moving around. But in reality they aren't building any long term industry that will keep Canadians gainfully employed long term, and at the same time it has priced most new Canadian home buyers completely out of the ability to own a home. Building homes is supposed to be a tertiary industry in support of proper primary and secondary industries, but politicians in Canada don't understand that, and the builders are throwing money at them had over fist, so unless there is some sort of revolution in how people vote, it will get worse.
The people here in this photo are homeless and have nowhere to go. Obviously as this woman shows, not all are irresponsible. Some folks work or try to, but still cannot afford a place of their own. The city won't provide a place for them even as they put in place policies making it harder to find living accommodations.
The city actually published a paper saying there needs to be at least 100,000 new rental units built in the next 4 years but have only given permits for a few thousand. Meanwhile they have approved tens of thousands of luxury condo units that will ultimately be bought by foreign property investors.
Please folks, if you look at pictures of Vancouver and think how nice it looks, remember that it shields this skeleton: while Vancouver has been dolled up to look really good, it is just the politicians putting lipstick on a pig. In North American and Canadian rankings, Vancouver is falling down the ratings quickly in terms of quality of life and economic quality.
This photo was taken couple of weeks ago. I was actually going to do something with this but had to go out of town for a bit of family emergency before I was able to send it. Emergency turned out OK for now. :)

Since this city is popping buildings at an unbelievable rate I wanted to shoot a updated view. It was a last minute initiative on my way back from a late afternoon at Crandon Beach Park. Conditions were kinda nice.
I photographed this cityscape of Miami with my 1DX-MII, which I use regularly for sports action - just out of curiosity. I never shot a previous scenery image with my regular 1DX. The clarity of this original size file is stunning. The cable on the crane at the building in construction in the picture is crystal clear. I not even shot in Raw because I forgot to change from JPEG in the quick setup as the light kept vanishing.
Perhaps I shoot a few more scenes like these soon. Interesting. The results are really amazing, especially when coupled with the ultra sharp: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8.

I decided to start the year with sad pictures.
These 2 buildings which are in a classified Beirut heritage street (Monot area in Achrafieh) are being destroyed for new real estate development. Probably ugly concrete tasteless residential buildings to be inhabited by an ugly and tasteless new bourgeoisie that can afford the tastelessness.
The one at the top which faces the Jesuit convent, the St. Joseph church and the Monot theater and is of the same age as the convent (>130 years old) was converted into a restaurant (Atlantis) in the 90's and then a club (Nabab) before being closed for the past 2 years.
The building in the bottom is an art-deco building from the 30s at the same street, it faces 'Time Out' for those who know it.
Beirut architectural fabric is being constantly devastated since the end of the civil-war in 91, more heritage buildings, houses and mansions have been destroyed exceeding what was damaged by the war (including the ones SOLIDER destroyed).
The Beirut municipality is only good at placing signs at heritage streets stating that it's a classified zone, but for the right price and under the right influence they would look away while real estate developers take down Beirut soul one building after another.
If I speak about the political affiliation of the municipality since 92 and how that relates to the SOLIDERE project and how that falsely represents the reconstruction of Beirut while the Beirut architectural fabric is being vandalized by real estate companies that have for the most the same affiliations... i will go forever...
