Uno de los grandes centros mineros de San Luis Potosí fue Real de Minas de Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de Guadalupe de los Álamos de Catorce, o mejor conocido como Real de Catorce. Es difícil precisar cuándo se descubrió la primera veta, pero ya en 1772 era un real o una población minera; es hasta el 11 de agosto de 1777 cuando surge como en documentos el término de “Los catorce”. Bonifacio Coronado, minero y borracho fue transfigurado en chamán curandero por la gracia de su santo, Bonifacio, quien se le apareció de cuerpo presente y con quien lloró abrazado suplicándole lo alejara de los vicios mundanos.
Había trabajado 43 años como minero cuando sucedió su transformación. No sabe leer pero sabe curar.
El Mezclillas, como le llama la gente, sana con piedras y peyote. Ha sido reconocido incluso por los chamanes huicholes en pleno Cerro Quemado.
Y es que Bonifacio, asegura, ha curado a personas que vienen de todas partes del mundo; dice que ha sacado gusanos vivos del cuerpo, clavos de la cabeza, entre otras cosas.
Sus instrumentos de trabajo son una piedra para detectar la enfermedad, cuarzos con agua que liberan de cualquier brujería, cuchillos de palo, amuletos para la abundancia, un péndulo que lo ayuda a tomar decisiones… y más.

A couple of weeks ago, during "Semana Santa" or Easter Week, I was in a small village high in the mountains of Mexico, Real de Catorce. I shot an hour and half of video: This first video is an assemblage of pieces of the villagers putting on the "Passion Play".....it is not like any "Easter Sunrise Service" you may be familiar with in the U.S.

Puesto ubicado frente a la Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción. Las gorditas de maíz se rellenan con nopalitos, chicharrón, frijoles con queso y asado de puerco. El costo? 6 pesos cada una...50 cents USD. Lo malo? que para las 2 o 3 de la tarde ya casi no le queda ninguna gordita.
Real de Catorce (or "Villa Real de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de Guadalupe de los Alamos de los Catorce," to give the town its full title) is located 284km from San Luis Potosí off federal Highway 57. At 2,756m, the air is crisp and the Sierra Madre majestic.
Real de Catorce blends in to the rocky crags of the high canyon in which it sleeps.
You approach by road through the 2.3km-long Ogarrio tunnel, which connects the town with the other side of the Sierra. It's only wide enough for one vehicle at a time, with a passing place in the middle; men stationed at each end control the 'traffic'. Some larger buses cannot get through, so you may have to hop on a minibus at the tunnel entrance. As you enter the tunnel, mine-shafts lead off into the mountain on either side; close to one there is a little shrine where a lone candle seems always to be burning.
Once out the other side, and your eyes adjust to the brilliant light, you feel as if you had just taken a journey back in time: the uneven stony streets are lined with derelict, shuttered, roofless mansions and, further out, crumbling foundations and broken stretches of wall. There are no modern shops, no supermarket, and until the recent shooting of the movie 'The Mexican' (with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt), the entire town had only one telephone line.

The Huichol Marakame is a singer Shaman. During the peyote rituals he is an interpreter for everyone else singing what the gods are saying to him at that precise moment.
