Probably I would be too diverted by the landscape to read this book sitting in front of the window.

What others dreamed

Read, read, read, the soul forgets

the things that happened

Those that remain remain, the fictions,

feather flowers,

the solitary, human creations,

the dregs of the foam.

Read, read, read; will i be reading

tomorrow me too?

Will I be my creator, my creature,

I will be what happened?

I’ve just read a comment from a photographer who said it’s time to stop shooting in black and white. He claimed we don’t see the world in black and white and it was something only done in the past due to the limitations at the time and it’s time to move on. Here’s a number of reasons why I think it’s critical to shoot black and white from time to time, and how it can help nurture your photographic eye.

Ansel Adams, Cartier Bresson, David Bailey, Karsh, Sebastio Salgado, Albert Watson, Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, Daidō Moriyama, Sally Mann, Avedon – the list of master photographers, alive or dead, who saw black and white not simply as a technical limitation but as a creative choice, could be an entire article in itself. But why did they choose it?

Here are some key reasons:

1. Color No Longer Distracts

2. You’ll See Light Differently

3. It Helps Emphasize Emotion

4. The Timeless / Classic Quality From Black And White

5. It Amplifies How You Use Negative Space

6. It Highlights Shape, Form and Pattern In The Image

7. To Highlight Beauty and Skin Tones

8. It Helps Focus On Composition

So What About Color?

The argument of not shooting black and white because it’s a thing of the past is a little odd to me, especially given that color photography is not necessarily a modern invention. Kodachrome for 35mm cameras has been around since the 1930s. The far more interesting (and possibly meaningful question) may be:“Why is black and white still so prevalent today, given we've been able to shoot color for so long?”.

I still shoot color and love playing with it, but I certainly enjoy the challenge and creative push from shooting in black and white.

On Unst, Shetland’s northernmost island, a striking Viking longhouse and ship replica offer a vivid glimpse into Norse life and legacy.

Unst is believed to be the first landfall of Vikings in the North Atlantic, and today it boasts the highest density of rural Viking sites in the world—over 60 longhouse remains have been identified across the island. The Viking Unst Project, centered in Haroldswick, brings this history to life through two captivating reconstructions: a 9th-century longhouse and the Skidbladner, a replica of the famed Gokstad ship.

The longhouse, built using traditional materials and techniques, stands as a tactile interpretation of Norse domestic architecture. Its turf walls, timber frame, and central hearth evoke the communal warmth and practicality of Viking living. Visitors can explore the interior freely, gaining insight into how families cooked, slept, and gathered in these elongated, multifunctional spaces. The reconstruction draws on archaeological findings from three key Unst sites—Hamar, Underhoull, and Belmont—each revealing layers of Norse settlement from around 1025 to 1220.

Just steps away, the Skidbladner rests beside Harold’s Wick, its sleek silhouette echoing the seafaring prowess of Viking explorers. Modeled after the Gokstad ship discovered in Norway, this replica showcases the craftsmanship and navigational ingenuity that enabled Norse expansion across Europe. With its clinker-built hull and graceful curves, the ship is both a tribute to Viking engineering and a symbol of their adventurous spirit.

Together, the longhouse and ship form a compelling open-air museum, accessible year-round and free to explore. They’re not just static displays—they’re immersive storytelling tools, anchoring Unst’s identity in its Norse heritage. Whether you’re tracing the footsteps of settlers or marveling at maritime design, these reconstructions offer a tangible connection to a time when Unst was a frontier of Viking ambition.

There was no getting out of the car to take photos, I took all my shots through the windscreen and between sweeps of the windscreen wipers. Otherwise, I rolled down the driver or passenger side windows and made the most of the opportunity. In this shot I pulled into some open ground beside the road to get this shot of a flooded mountain stream. The rain and wet windscreen capture the immediacy of the moment.

(Warning... long read but interesting for anyone who's had a similar experience.)

So.... I had the POLICE called on me today! 😳

Can you imaging this. There I am taking pictures of nature (frozen branches actually) in our local "Parc de Cite". And a very "disturbed" woman starts mildly yelling at me not to take her picture. Clearly I said I hadn't taken anything of her, I take only nature. (As you all know me to do, take photos of nature and animals)

And then all "craziness" breaks out.. She starts to relentlessly continue to harrass me by accusing me of being a stalker?? She just wouldn't leave me alone, so naturally I start to verbably defend myslef. I mentioned how she thought of herself as a princess or her highness. Thinking that the world must bow to her ..ect! That is what she must think if she thinks everyone is taking photos of her. Also letting her know that she may forgot to take her pills this morning!!

Meanwhile I'm trying to get away from her and continue taking pictures of the branches that had a small frozen nest in it. And the whole time she was verbally harrassing me and calling me "B" things, ect.

So I look at her and notice she recording me on her cell. So now I tell her I don't give her permission to do this! She claimed she wasn't filming me. More argueing on both parts and next thing you know she's following me to my car (at a distance at first) then runs toward the back to (AS SHE SAYS) take a picture of my license because shes going to POST it in her twitter-instagram. to let everybody know I'm a stacker!

ALL THIS.. because I'm taking pictures of frozen branches?? W.T.Heck!! I then proceed to cover my license plate to stop her from posting my MOM'S car online! And she comes in closer (here I start to use my cell to record her incase she physically attacks me. She started to give me that feeling she would. She then hits my phone to push it down) At this point she went nuts. Me hiding my plate was proof enough to her that I'm a predator, she said??! So she threatnens to call the cops... SO of course I begged her too!! I wanted them to see her act crazy like this!

Meanwhile I said... why not call Mom and get her over here to be a witness to the craziness. And sure enough.. the moment mom gets there it didn't long for mom to see how mentally unstable his woman was. She started mouthing off to mom too!

So COPS arrive.. one goes to her one comes to me. And what do I notice... She pulls out her cell and shows the cop the recording of me verbally deffending myslef. You know.. the one she said she DIDn't take of me!!

And what worse.. she was all of the sudden acting calm and composed to the Policemen. WOW... she knew exactly what she was doing!! A real manipulator! Two young handsome policemen... yah.. she knew what she was doing!

I tried to get the cop to look at my camera to show all the photos I took, and to show that SHE wasn't in anyone of them. Seing as though it was all trees-snow covered benches and frozen branches. But he wasn't interested in looking.

What a waste of the policemens time... such a drama from a uneducated woman who in my oppinion was looking for a altercation (maybe to have something to post online to get attention)

You want to know the funny part of this.... this Woman has done this to me before!! Yup.. I had the horror of meeting her last summer already. She singled me out like this and accused me of taking photos of her. And wouldn't you know it.... I was taking a picture of a tree and had my back to her that time too! (Yes.. I mentioned this to the police as well) Like a said ... she's looking for attention and creating DRAMA where ever she can!

She told the police she wouldn't post anything on social media, yet I thought I saw her doing that at the beggining of her tantrum with me. The police said we could go after her in court if he bullie's and trashes me online!

I'm so embarrased that the police had to come for this lunacy. And are you really telling me I can't mind my own buisiness and take photos of nature in my own local parc. Without having to go through this nonsense.

The Policemen told me the next time I see her to stay out of her way and point the camera opposite of her.?? I laughed and said... Thats EXACTLY what I was doing in the the first place!!! As I said.. she went looking for me! But nice to know I have to walk around her. I guess she is royalty afterall!!

So be warned my fellow nature photographers... You could get into trouble for taking a picture of a frozen branch with leaves on them!!! :-O

(Thank-you to anyone who took the time to read this.. I think I just needed to vent a little about this odd happening)

Now I'm just waiting to see myslef online via social media, yelling back at a crazy woman who wouldn't leave me alone. And most probably getting 100 of thousands haters threatening me online now. Only because a woman who started this atercation just so she can be the center of attention!!? That seems to be the norm these days, to be popular online!!
