The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 9th of August is "multicoloured abstract", which I won’t deny had me flummoxed at first! What on earth could I photograph? Then I remembered a photograph that I took a few weeks ago. It was just by chance that I thought to take it. A friend had been clearing out an estate and came across a rather lovely book of glass published in the 1960s which they thought I might enjoy. I have been enjoying it, but as much for photography purposes as for reading material. I had been photographing the book in the sun, and as a result of being in the pool of warmth, made more intense by the fact it was coming through the my French doors in my sun room, the bindings had begun to distort which made the pages open sightly. I rather liked the fact that some of the pages clumped and others didn't, and that glimpses of the colourful end pages and print could be seen. I thought it made for an interesting abstract as it were. I hope that you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile
Photograph taken on Tri-X. I didn't keep great records when in High School and College but I do know this was taken in the late 1970s in Manhattan New York City. Newstands are pretty much a thing of the past.

This week the Flickr Friday theme is "stacked”, and one of my close friends who also enjoys cooking, inspired me to create this stack of recipe books.
It is not unusual when I have guests coming over that I will plan a three, four or five course luncheon or dinner that can be enjoyed over several hours. Therefore in the planning stages of such an event, it is not unusual to find a stack of recipe books like this on my kitchen bench, many of which are tagged with Post-It Notes or scraps of paper to mark favourite recipes.

"The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do." - B. F. Skinner
-----
Spent the majority of the daylight hours running around and accomplishing errands that involved being away from the home.
When I finally came back to the house late this afternoon, I got the idea in my head that it was time to tidy up the chaos that had become my bookcases.
I did manage to get them somewhat organized, although I really do need to go through the books and start purging some of the ones I won't read again, but for now, they will continue to take up space on the shelves. That's another project for another day.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

My reading material for my Atlanta trip. "1984" is leftover from my last trip. Before meeting Kristin for dinner at Tejas (yay - I know how to spell it now!) last night, I browsed Barnes & Noble and picked up a couple extra novels for the journey. We'll see if I get through all 3 in the next week.
Hoping to raise credits for Palpatine's Find the Droids campaign next year, Stormtrooper Bruce is hard at work on another installation of his Trooper Stupor Calendar, proving Troopers are not all serious, all the time. The guys are just waiting for Movie Night to begin.
TK-432: Dude, don't know how you do it, but this one might be even more outrageous than your last one.
TK-1110: Definitely going to make a few folks say whaa?
STB: Yes, but those who get it will love it!
TK-IDK: Well, I don’t get it. Mind letting me in on what I’m supposed to be doing?
STB: Hold still, there's lots more angles I want to get.
TK-432: Eww, what's he splashing? You did put water in that, didn't you?
TK-1110: Water shmater - no matter WHAT that is, I'm not cleaning it up!
TK-432: Me neither. He who splashes cleans it up. You do remember where we found that pink porcelain throne this time, don't you?
TK-IDK: I don't know what that is, but if it's NOT water, someone is going to be rancor food.
STB: No worries, I've got it all under control. No use crying over spilled milk. Well, you get the drift.
TK-432: You know, I might be willing to buy your calendar just to have this one framed!
TK-IDK: I still don't know what I'm doing. Is someone going to tell me?
TK-1110: You must be a Muggle not to get it. If we tell you we'll just have to obliviate you.
TK-IDK: OK. That does it! I don't know what you're talking about so I think I'm done here.
STB: Turn back around and hold still for just a few more shots. This one might go on the front cover! The P is going to love this.
TK-432: Was that a joke? The P?

Beatlemaniac here, born a few years too late to have seen them play live, but a true believer from the first time I saw Yellow Submarine on TV as a tot. Tons of pages written about Ringo, George, John, & Paul - I deliberately mixed up the traditional order of citing their names - and I can never get enough. Sure, I gotta life, but their music was so transcendent - joyous, funny, sad, passionate, mad, inspiring, whatever suits your mood - that if I trip over somebody's reach for the brass ring, I'll halt in my tracks and devour their words in a heartbeat. Why, because they almost always make me feel joy.

Reading Material
Dull weather again with flat light outside, so we've been playing around with some tabletop photography again using what natural light there is coming through a window. Reading material, a good book, a mug of coffee and some biscuits. Oh, and a camera!
I stumbled on this November, 2018, photo while sorting through some older pix yesterday. I really wish this kitty'd lived longer. She was lots of fun.
I always have a book or two on the go and several waiting in the wings.

Doc and I have hundred's of books scattered around our cabin, and literally stacked to the ceiling. This is one of the book boxes that rim the upper walls of our four season porch. We have hard covers and paperbacks - signed books and kindle editions. There is not a day, that we don't spend reading at least one hour. So to all who love to read . . . "Happy World Book Day!"
The Bang Bang Club was a name primarily associated with four photographers active within the townships of South Africa during the Apartheid period, particularly between 1990 and 1994, from when Nelson Mandela was released from jail to the 1994 elections. Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva were the four associated with the name, although a number of photographers and photojournalists worked alongside them . A movie about the group, directed by Steven Silver and starring Taylor Kitsch, Ryan Phillippe and Malin Åkerman, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010.

The account of Bobby Bluegill's life from hatchling to patriarch, including his experiences with anglers and mating, it exemplifies bluegill biology and ecology. Written by R.W Eschmeyer, Copyright 1952
I grabbed this book from the bookshelf to thumb through as my wife did some shopping at an antique store. I used to fish a lot as a child and many times my dad and I would fish every weekend.
My wife asked me what I was reading as I looked at the book. As I showed her the book I told her I was disappointed because I couldn't find a recipe for Bobby the Bluegill. I'm quite fond of them

Goco, you are the one who's responsible for this reading material.
Now I know where "bedding as landscape" comes from ;)
There's probably quite a bit of knowledge in these books.
I'd like to know why the books are stored with their binding facing down. What's that all about? If you're a librarian, share the knowledge!
Is this the smallest and most unusual bookstore or library ever? In the sleepy English village of Rotherwick in Hampshire, England, the villagers have converted an old red telephone box into a small book shop or Library. OK, it doesn't actually SELL books, but the idea is that the villagers, or visiitors, can borrow and exchange books, and donate books for others to read and exchange, so that there is a good turnover of reading material. Cute, no? :-)
The full text of the notice in the window reads as follows:
These books have been placed here for the enjoyment of village residents. If you find a book you would like to read - please help yourself, then return it for someone else to enjoy. Or if you have a book you would like to donate, please leave it on the shelf. Thank You!

In our junior high school library, we're now starting to file our "Super Quick Picks" books (reading levels kindergarten to grade 3) in outward -facing baskets rather than placed as books are in a more traditional library shelf. This helps encourage our students reading below grade level to feel more at ease selecting books for themselves as they can see the colourful and enticing covers, and selection is faster and easier.

it really is amazing how tolerant some cats are. i can place just about anything on top of my cat and she'll just sit there like a retard.
a really cute furry retard.
It seems as though I am faced with an ongoing inflow of new reading material every week, and the continued burden of this accumulating madness can lead to an unhealthy, impulsive, compelling, obsession of collecting the volumes needed to complete the concluded series or to supplement the unended anecdotes. Manic episode perhaps? It would be reasonable to infer that I've simply gone mad like a Lovecraftian archetype.... I need a bigger bookshelf.
Here's what's new to my table:
Red Sonja Volume 1: Queen of the Plagues
-Gail Simone (Batgirl, Birds of Prey) gives the iconic fantasy heroine a fresh new attitude! Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, intends to pay back a blood debt owed to the one man who has gained her respect... even if it means leading a doomed army to their certain deaths! Who is Dark Annisia, and how has this fearsome warrior accomplished what no god nor demon has been able to do: force Sonja to her knees in surrender? An epic tale of blood, lust, and vengeance, Queen of the Plagues takes Red Sonja from the depths of her own grave to the heights of battlefield glory. Featuring Gail Simone's Red Sonja # 1 script!
Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass and Sorcery
-Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they’re in the business of killing all god’s creatures for profit. It’s also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!
Ciao Bella! Gotta love this little girl who stays focused on her objective regardless of what goes on around her.
Books from my bed area await vacant shelves, dusting, etc, so I can have my most favorite things within eyesight and easy reach. That includes the genealogy titles, some weighty; my college literature texts/anthologies, including the Riverside Shakespeare, I think every English major in America still has their copy of that treasure. Who could ever turn loose of THAT.
Whoever says we should transfer to remote learning even after #Covid should have their head re-examined or do some kind of study to prove that it works or better than traditional learning. Personally, I hate it !!! I can’t ! I just can’t !!
Let's not be the ones outside
Looking at the world go by
Saw you standing all alone
.
Wasted time has gone for good
Play no more, it's understood
Come to the twilight zone
.
Let me feel your secret hand
Like a feather on the sand
Only made of gold
.
You can make me feel a king
And surrender everything
A fire can't control
.
Hold me in your arms again
Strangers down a lonely lane
We can still survive
Driftwood on the stream of life
.
Hold me in your arms again
Let me touch your velvet skin
No more lonely nights
On the way of no return
.
Play me the bolero
.
See your mystery in your eyes
And the emotion in your lies
I feel the magic in your touch
'Cause the wanting is too much
.
Hold me in your arms again
Strangers down a lonely lane
We can still survive
Driftwood on the stream of life
.
Hold me in your arms again
Let me touch your velvet skin
No more lonely nights
On the way of no return
.
Play me the bolero
My bolero
.
Hold me in your arms again
Strangers down a lonely lane
We can still survive
Driftwood on the stream of life
Hold me in your arms again

Last May 6 saw the beginning of our bathroom remodel project. Our contractor's design specialist, Jaime, visited us. She examined our bathroom, took photos, measured stuff, and asked us questions. She was accompanied by Brian, the firm's "remodeling consultant," who helped Jaime check stuff out and also asked and answered questions.
Prior to their arrival we'd made the house presentable. I photographed some of that. Then I took some pretty much random pix of the house and the yard. I shared a few of those over the next few days.
And I posted a cute pic of Joan chatting with one of the cats as my daily project's photo.
