Governor Jack Markell, Lt. Governor Denn, Susan Cycyk, and DSCYF Secretary Jennifer Ranji visited the Peter Spencer Family Life Foundation Freedom School located at Rev. Livingston's Mother African Union Church. The program follows the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School model which aims to provide literacy rich summer programs in communities where literacy levels are low or non-existent. It is one of the 12 after school/summer prevention programs for which the Joint Finance Committee approved initial funding for our Department during the FY 14 budget cycle.

The visit will began with participation in what is called Harambee, which comes from the Swahili word for ‘let’s pull together.’ Harambee is a half hour session of singing, listening to guest ‘read-a-loud’ speaker (which was the Governor) and motivational time for the children. Visitors heard speeches from all ages of children on their social justice issue: voting rights and early childhood education.

Today’s grade-schoolers downloaded apps before they could read. In fact, that is probably how they learned to read. So when Kelsey Peterson, a reading teacher in Kansas City, realized she could use her students’ digital instincts to make them better learners, she enrolled in the educational technology master’s degree program at KU (bit.ly/1MfEaj2).

The fact that she could take classes at KU’s Edwards campus in Overland Park made her decision that much easier.

Here’s her story. bit.ly/17Ed8CP
