At We’re Here! today we are challenged to post people reading to the group Reading Books in Nice Places, and then say why we selected the chosen book. I recently decided to try reading Stephen King’s epic “The Dark Tower”. This is a work of science fiction, and is actually a series of seven novels. This seems like a somewhat challenging choice for someone who hasn’t been reading novels much for quite a few years, but if I really get into a good story I’m quite capable of tearing through thousands of pages. The trick is to find a story that good. The first installment, “The Gunslinger”, introduced the protagonist crossing a surreal desert landscape which seems to be the American West, but something is horribly wrong with the spinning of time. I’m looking forward to the second book, which my library should deliver any day now.

I photographed my background this summer at Agate Flats, Wyoming – an appropriately surreal and amazing landscape to illustrate this book. My gunslinger image is a promotional piece for the book/movie I found here:

Lately, my wife and I have been expanding our reading list, and I ended up creating a small library on this rack.

In the year 2020 I ended up reading 13 books, in the year 2021 I ended up reading 28 books.

And on the shelves we can find classics and contemporaries of Brazilian, Portuguese, Russian, English, American, Colombian, Italian literature, among others, and without ceasing to exist my favorite photobooks by Sebastião Salgado and Guilherme Gaensly.

"And while I let the light in, I take the opportunity to sit and enjoy a good read."

Happy weekend my friends.

* I appreciate the visit, faves and comments of my photo.

During this self-quarantine moments, I have recently brought down some of my old storybooks from the top of the shelves & decided to read them once again. They remind me of all those good times that cannot be rewind, but give hopes that we can bring back our own happiness if we follow the right path!!!

Staying at home is a blessing, for us as well as to nature... I can see the trees are becoming greener than they used to be!!!

The Last Olympian -- "All year the half-bloods have been preparing for battle against the Titans, knowing the odds of victory are grim. Kronos's army is stronger than ever, and with every god and half-blood he recruits, the evil Titan's power only grows. While the Olympians struggle to contain the rampaging monster Typhon, Kronos begins his advance on New York City, where Mount Olympus stands virtually unguarded. Now it's up to Percy Jackson and an army of young demigods to stop the Lord of Time...the long-awaited prophecy surrounding Percy's sixteenth birthday unfolds. And as the battle for Western civilization rages on the streets of Manhattan, Percy faces a terrifying suspicion that he may be fighting against his own fate." -- from www.amazon.com

This is very good so far (I'm about halfway through). I really liked the rest of the books in the series, and I'm anxious to find out what happens in the end of this one.

My Life in France -- "Julia Child single handedly awakened America to the pleasures of good cooking with her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her television show The French Chef, but as she reveals in this bestselling memoir, she didn't know the first thing about cooking when she landed in France.

Indeed, when she first arrived in 1948 with her husband, Paul, she spoke no French and knew nothing about the country itself. But as she dove into French culture, buying food at local markets and taking classes at the Cordon Bleu, her life changed forever. Julia's unforgettable story unfolds with the spirit so key to her success as a cook and teacher and writer, brilliantly capturing one of the most endearing American personalities of the last fifty years." -- from www.amazon.com

This is a very funny and articulate book. I'm really enjoying reading about her life and work. It's not just about her love of cooking but also about her travels, her relationships with family and friends, and the general world climate in the post-World War II years. The only problem is, even though I'm not a big fan of French food, I find myself feeling hungry every time I pick up the book to read :)

25 Book Challenge 2010 Books #28 & #29

After finishing off the Harry Potter books, I was looking for something similar and someone recommended the Charlie Bone books. This is the 7th and most recent one released. They're a pretty good series. I saw someone describe them as "Harry Potter lite" and I think that's a fairly good description. In the books, a boy named Charlie Bone finds out he's descended from a king with magical powers. Charlie's inherited the power of hearing the voices of people in photos & paintings. He's sent to a school where other magically "endowed" children go and (a la Harry Potter) naturally gets into dangerous situations. They're not as dark as Harry Potter and don't take themselves as seriously as Harry Potter or the Dark is Rising seria. They're a pretty fast read but enjoyable, which is nice sometimes when I just want something light to take my mind off life. Or if I'm reading something heavier or more emotional, I'll switch to a light-hearted book as a distraction of sorts.

She has no fascination left about life.

But she wanted to know why people are so in love with life.

So, she decided to live and read the books.

I love this backdrop the roses are so pretty and one of the few backdrops there is at the moment!

In the middle of photographing it started raining with a lot of wind but then the sun came out so I'm not complaining! ♥
