Eddi Reader at The Outsider Festival, Aviemore, June 2007

Tried out the nook touch at the Barnes & Noble near me.

Pretty nice little unit. Small, touchscreen, fast screen refresh for decent responsiveness. The case is sort of rubberized for a comfortable grippy feel.

The fast screen refresh did seem to come at the cost of more visible "ghosting" when going from, say, the book selection screen to the text of the book. Flipping pages didn't seem to force a full refresh, but changing font size did.

Unlike the Kindle, there are lots of fonts to choose from, although the leading and justification leaves something to be desired. I tried using "publisher's default" for a sample book, and the line height was such that the text was touching, almost overlapping. Ebook typography in general could use some help.

Overall, a nice little reader. All my books are on Kindle, though, so my eggs are in that basket. =)

I watched Kenna turn that book upside down with great purpose. It seemed to make the understanding of the story complete in her world. Whatever it takes, I'm raising readers.

Lancashire Evening Post readers debate the pressing issues of the day - this time it's poor quality slippers of unmerchantable quality - should Trading Standards be called in ? or is the Labour Party to blame ?

" Over the recent years, the world of news and media has been rife with scandal. Deception and corruption have shocked the nation. The need for a serious and reliable news source is crucial to our society, we are at breaking point. Feeling helpless? Wondering ‘what do we do?’ The answer lies in Preston . "

This Lancashire town has been through some dark times, and there to broadcast these crimes and atrocities has been the ‘ Lancashire Evening Post ’. "

I got tired of balancing my husband's rubberized glasses case on top of a book so I could lean my reader against it at the right angle for me to read and eat my lunch at the same time. I had some pieces already made of selvages from a little pouch that I had made and then torn apart, so I used them to make a triangular body that I filled with crushed walnut shells for weight and added a little bumper at the bottom. PERFECT!

It holds my reader at the proper angle and it is slightly adjustable due to the walnut shells. And it won't be knocked around by cheesy cats, either, as it's fairly heavy!

Woooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! Just found out that my soccer team is #1 in our league!! Wooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

On a flight from Italy to Los Angeles, a "Solitary Reader" was reading an Italian book. It took me a moment to pull out my camera but I am glad I did. I liked that this person was so personally alone with his book, although surrounded by so many strangers.

He seems so absorbed in his reading, I wish I knew what book it was.

What magazines should be (if you consider RD a magazine)

Anthony Peppiatt, about 9 am, 27 July, Oxenholm Station (that's Kendal in the background). I approached him because he was reading the London Review of Books (which has a distinctive layout and columns) and I'd never seen anyone else reading it. I asked his permission and gave him my contact details. He was on his way to a course in Kendal; we talked about where I work (he had studied in the department) and about his playing the violin. Oddly, we didn't talk about the London Review of Books; from the photos I can tell which article this is, and it seems he is one issue ahead of me (the articles are long).
