What does the EU do with your money? Is it invested wisely? Does it help support sustainable growth? These were the issues debated on the ReAct event in Frankfurt on 5 December where experts and citizens exchanged views on how to make money from the EU budget really count. There was a broad agreement that the EU funds should promote not just economic growth but also solidarity.

React, Respect, Intersect was created by two professional artists and a team of youth artists as part of the Groundswell Community Mural Project’s flagship Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). SLI teams spend seven weeks during working with artists and community-based organizations, learning job skills and creating public art throughout New York City. This mural depicts a utopian environment where vehicular traffic, pedestrians of all ages and abilities, bicyclists, skateboarders, and animals respectfully share the street. It focuses not only on traffic and pedestrian safety education, but also site-specific themes and cultural diversity.

The safety education focus of this mural was informed by workshops lead by NYCDOT Safety Education. The artists and youth artists researched safety issues near the mural site which influenced their final design. Speed of vehicular traffic, high levels of carbon dioxide in the air, and the need for all modes of transportation to respectfully share the streets are just a few of the themes beautifully integrated in to this mural.

Done at the airport on my way back from Washington DC.

More of my Graffiti

People tend to react one of two ways to the place where they live - things are either the "best" or the "worst." I think the "Randolph Memories" mural in downtown Asheboro is one of the best murals I have seen.

I don't have any local connection to the mural since I am the only one in my family who has lived in Asheboro, Randolph County, or central North Carolina. Maybe that qualifies me as an unbiased observer. I have lived in Randolph County long enough that it is home. I am a guest in any other place where I visit.

It is hard to get a photo of the full mural without cars on the street. Fayetteville Street and its intersection with Sunset Avenue is one of the busiest places in town. I cut off the left end of the mural because I could tell a car was entering the intersection. I'll have to try this shot again some Sunday morning and hope to get the full mural.

I tried to find a legend to the mural on the internet but was not successful. I am pretty sure the plank road in the lower two-thirds of the mural is the old Plank Road that connected Salem (now Winston Salem) to Fayetteville. Much of its route through Asheboro is now Fayetteville Street.

The mural was originally painted in 1977 and restored in 2009. I recall some newspaper articles during restoration in which people tried to identify some of the people in the mural. It was nice watching the restoration take place - some of which was in the winter - and very nice when the scaffolding came down and the restored mural was once again on full display.

These photos were taken the first Sunday in March, in between small rain spurts and when the drizzle was light enough that I was not too concerned about damaging Baby Canon. The exposure has been edited on each photo since I can't set the exposure like I do with Papa Canon.

Most of the photo below were taken at an angle from the sidewalk by the mural. Even early on a Sunday morning there was too much traffic to stand out in the street for straight on shots. The photos below are posted from left to right and top to bottom in their placement on the mural.

Well - that's a long introduction. Enjoy the rest of the photos and the minimalist remaining commentary.

I always wondered if these guys named this magazine after me. Not me, of course, but they were from the area and would have seen REACT written around different skate spots.
