CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait- This week Soldiers from Afghanistan and Kuwait compete to become the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) Best Warrior. The Best Warrior competition is a five-day event that challenges every Soldier’s mental and physical limitations with a variety of contests.
The first day the Soldiers were literally put to the test, as they answered a variety of questions ranging from Army regulation and Sexual Harassment Assault & Response Prevention to vehicle preventive maintenance checks and services (PMCS).
After exercising their brains on day one, the second day opened up with Soldier’s taking an Army Physical Fitness Test, followed by a scorching hot Kuwait afternoon filled with Army Warrior Tasks (AWT). Each Soldier was tested on five separate AWT’s, and whether it was evaluating a casualty under fire, PMCS or reacting to a chemical agent by properly decontaminating themselves, each Soldier proved up to the challenge.
On Day three the competitors were transported north to Camp Buehring, Kuwait, for a long day of weapon qualification and land navigation. The 1st TSC and 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) cadre were set up and ready to go as the warriors arrived and helped expedite the competitors through their challenges. The land navigation began in the afternoon following the qualification challenge, and it was perhaps the toughest of the week as shade was non-existent on a navigational course sprawled across open desert and few landmarks to guide them.
After a long day the sweat soaked Soldiers prepared themselves for a 12-mile ruck march early on day four. Each Soldier finished in under the three-hour time limit, and spirits were never higher as competitors who finished quickly dropped their ruck and hustled back to pick up their battle buddies who were farther behind. After a few hours rest, each Soldier prepared for the mystery event later that afternoon. Each Soldier and their sponsor pondered what the event would include. Could it be combatives? Swimming? In the end it was a drill and ceremony event, as the importance of drill and ceremony becomes center stage as the Army transitions to a garrison environment.
Friday will bring their final test, a formal board filled with sergeants major, and Saturday the 1st TSC will crown their new Best Warrior, who will represent the 1st TSC next month in the U.S. Army Central Best Warrior Competition here.

It’s a chance for them to explore and develop the way they make work. Using the illustrated children’s book THE RED TREE by Shaun Tan as inspiration, the focus of this REACT is to create an age specific piece for children aged 10 and under. #RXREACT

I didn't react too well to the last (new) chemo. Massive (and quite terrifying) dehydration, another infection and more.. But while it wasn't nice, the problem wasn't in how I felt generally but in what it did to my extremities. You know how your finger feels in those few moments after it has been caught in a slammed door? That's how all my fingers and toes felt for the best part of a week. My heels too. I was reduced to knuckling mobile phone and keyboard when necessary, but the feeling is fading now and I hope to be able to get back to normal internet use tomorrow or Monday.
Of course if it happened this time it'll be worse for the next two, but with only 7 weeks and 2 days to go I'll get through it - and the rest.
