I had to take a closer shot of this cake box.....was surprised to find plastic coating on top. They also thought of that?! Wow.
This remarkable, still-standing, prehistoric tree is exposed along the Sandy River in northwestern Oregon.
The Sandy River has a deeply incised, meandering river valley. The river itself is about 300 feet below the surrounding land surface (= a Middle Pleistocene-aged surface). In 2008, flooding in the Sandy River resulted in erosion that exposed once-buried trees - a ghost forest. Shown here is the site in fall 2009.
The tree - apparently a conifer - died in the late 1700s. It was part of a forest that was buried starting in 1781. It probably took a decade to bury and kill it. The 1781 event was deposition of a lahar - a volcanic mud flow - from Mt. Hood, a subduction zone stratovolcano in northwestern Oregon. Mt. Hood is part of the north-south trending Cascade Range of volcanoes. Other famous Cascade volcanoes include Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Shasta, and Mt. Mazama (now Crater Lake Caldera).
Mt. Hood area volcanism started in the Middle Miocene (8 to 10 million years ago), just after Columbia River Flood Basalt volcanism. Miocene and Pliocene andesites and basalts cap topographic ridges in the Mt. Hood area. During the Late Pliocene (sensu traditio), at 3 to 1.3 million years ago, the Sandy Glacier Volcano occupied the site of the current Mt. Hood. It has been mostly buried by the modern Mt. Hood volcanic cone. Mt. Hood itself is less than 730,000 years old - all of its rocks have modern magnetic signatures. Lavas and other eruptive materials are high-silica andesites and low-silica dacites. 70% of the Mt. Hood cone consists of lava flows, while the remaining 30% is volcaniclcastic deposits. The modern cone is less than 300,000 years old. Near the summit of Mt. Hood are <200,000 year old lava flows.
Unlike nearby Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood is much older and has had little explosive activity. Most of Mt. Hood's volcanism has consisted of andesite lava flows and dome-building. Few explosive events have occurred through time here - few tephra deposits have a Mt. Hood source.
Mt. Hood rocks are often porphyritic two-pyroxene andesites, plus a little olivine. There's been little chemical variation in Mt. Hood lavas through time. Because of this, individual lava flows are difficult to date based on lithology - they're all the same. Much of Mt. Hood itself is hydrothermally-altered rocks.
Names are assigned to the various eruptive phases in Mt. Hood's history. The Polallie eruptive phase occurred from 12 to 25 thousand years ago. The Timberline eruptive phase occurred ~1500 years ago. The Old Maid eruptive phase occurred over 200 years ago, often dated to 1780-1801 A.D. Dome building occurred from 1781 to 1793. During that time, periodic, relatively small eruptions occurred.
Because Mt. Hood is a snow-clad volcano, activity results in melting of snow and mobilization of loose materials. Rainstorms could also mobilize loose debris in the area. Mt. Hood lahars have probably formed by both mechanisms.
Looking back at the photo, a 1781 lahar deposit is exposed near the present river level. This site is 70 kilometers downstream from Mt. Hood. All of the overlying sediments (= most of the riverbank slope here) are fluvially-redeposited volcaniclastic sediments, deposited during the decade after 1781. These sediments are mostly cross-bedded, medium-grained to coarse-grained sands with some pebbles - they are all fluvial and loosely compacted.
In 1793, the Sandy River started to incise through the sediment fill. Most of the 1800s was needed for the river to erode through Old Maid-aged deposits to the present level of the river.
The tree shown here is not a fossil. A fossil is any evidence of ancient life - "ancient" meaning Pleistocene or older. This ghost forest is late Holocene in age (late 1700s A.D.) and the tree, once buried and now exposed, is a "sub-fossil". The wood is unaltered - it is not "fossilized". There is a difference between being a fossil and being "fossilized". The former refers to the age, while the latter refers to the preservation style involving altered parts (altered hard parts or altered soft parts or both).

Cove is the girl that arrived a few weeks ago with issues. Since then, she's been given a new body, a pair of lovely new eye chips and some fun, geeky glasses. I am hoping with these changes with her that I can bond with her now, as she had such an unpleasant arrival to me. I really think these glasses look darling on her!

I’ve just returned from Oregon. I was on a birding expedition with some friends who are also photographers. We spent a couple of days in the Klamath Basin looking for Clark and/or Western Grebes doing their Spring mating ceremony and dance or what the Scientist call “rushing”. We were successful finding them as well as several other birds; some familiar and others new, and it was neat to see many birds I know in their Spring Breeding plumage when in up til now I've only seen them when they spend Winter near me and in the Pacific Flyway.
Yesterday morning I was following this male Robin around trying to take his photo when he caught up with the female and I happened to press the shutter catching them “in medias res”.
He's enjoying it...she, not so much. She couldn't get away fast enough.

Stop the War "Mass Assembly: Afghanistan - Time to Go!" Trafalgar Square/Downing Street - 08.10.2011
Part Three - March and protest at the gates of Downing Street
To mark the 10th anniversary of the commencement of the disastrous war in Afghanistan, the Stop the War Coalition organised a Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square on October 8th 2011, drawing around five thousand people from all over the country.
Throughout the afternoon a long list of passionate guest speakers spoke to the crowd, including Wikileaks founder Julian Assange (replete with electronic tag and police minders), investigative journalist John Pilger, musician and composer Brian Eno - who had contributed a soundtrack to the Stop The War video: What is the True Cost of the War in AQfghanistan? which ran on the large video wall above the stage, blogger Sanum Ghafour, Lauren Booth - muslim convert sister-in-law of as-yet unprosecuted war criminal Tony Blair, Labour party icon Tony Benn (President, Stop the War), renegade politician and firebrand George Galloway (Vice-President, Stop the War), Lindsey German (Convenor, Stop the War), outgoing Stop The War chairman Andrew Murray, incoming chairman Jeremey Corbyn MP, Bruce Kent and Kate Hudson from CND, Clare Soloman and many, many others. A great line-up of musicians, rappers and poets also took part, entertaining and educating the crowd and after the last guest speaker had finished the whole crowd upped-sticks and marched the short distance down Whitehall and arrived en masse literally right up against the gates of Downing Street - catching the police completely on the back foot for about 15 minutes - where the assembled crowd jeered and booed at full volume for the next hour and a half whilst a petition was handed in to number 10 Downing Street by the marvellous 104 year old veteran peace campaigner Miss Hetty Bower and Jeremey Corbyn MP.
Despite the chaos and pandemonium and the panic on the faces of the armed police officers on the other side of Fortress Downing Street (where all our blood-drenched war-mongering prime ministers hide from The People), there was only one arrest, though one homeless woman did try very hard at the end to get herself arrested so she could score a bed for the night and a couple of hot meals. The police did not oblige her, so she went back hungry to her cold shop doorway to wait for the oncoming Winter to kill her instead...
It seems ugly and morally obscene to me that Her Majesty's Megalomaniac Government is happy to currently spend £4.5 billion per year fighting an unwinnable war in Afghanistan, yet we cannot feed and house the homeless in the United Kingdom because, strangely enough, the country is bankrupt. I wonder if there's a connection?
