Good Morning, RDU! My name is Shirley and I was born right up the road in Smithfied… Brogden to be exact (home of icon Ava Gardner). I moved to Raleigh right after I graduated from Mount Olive College… yep, home to the Mt. Olive pickles! Having spent my entire life within a 40 mile radius of my hometown I have watched many changes take place in this city of ours. On September 10th I will participate in my first MS Ride and I will attempt to ride 150 miles over the course of 2 days. I will begin today with a training ride on the Neuse River Trail. This trail runs from Falls Dam to Clayton, about 33 miles. I love riding this trail! I especially love this bridge which is wedged right in the middle of the Johnston County line and the very popular sunflower field. To me the trail perfectly exemplifies what growing up in North Carolina was like. As it winds through wide open spaces I get to reconnect with that native NC scenery I grew up with, sometimes I am greeted by a fox, rabbit or family of deer. Human families are also out. In the Spring you are greeted with the smell of Wisteria, in the summer honeysuckle and right now the Clematis are in full bloom. The waves exchanged remind me of that small town sense of community North Carolina is known for. When I see an older man fishing along the Neuse I am automatically transported back to those simpler times… #growingupinnorthcarolina *insert Andy Griffith theme song here* / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BJxbDHHhTam/

Nothing better than being accepted into your best friends family :) currently stopping at my roommate and best friends moms house to do some holiday helping - this the season of giving so I’m giving my time to help those who don’t have time of their own to get everything done during this bustling season! Oh! I forgot to mention I have absurd amounts of free time because I currently work as a nanny for two wonderful children and as a tutor specializing in SAT and ACT prep! #nannylife #tutorlife #seasonofgiving #rdubaton #raleighnc #homeawayfromhome #decorations #unofficialelf (photo by @scurah0219) / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/_W-eDWDh8P/
I’ll sign off with this fun burst of color! Caught a glimpse of this mural while walking around downtown Carrboro after dinner. I’m not going to lie, getting multiple Instagram posts into one day with a new baby is no joke. It takes a lot more effort to even get out the door, so many thanks to @rdubaton for giving me a reason to explore today :) 📷: @kmjphoto / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BFfYZ5QDhz-/
Good morning! My name’s Jon (@dymogeek) and I’m an NC native, currently residing in Holly Springs. One of the best parts about the Triangle is the abundance of green space and easily accessible hikes. This morning, my new best friend, Parker, insisted that we take advantage of the sunshine and hit Eno River State Park. The trails are easily marked and quite scenic along the quarry and river. While it was too cold to swim this morning, Parker assures me it’s very nice in the summertime. We sniffed all the leaves and enjoyed the sunshine bouncing off the water and through the trees instead. : @macaronsandmayhem #enoriver #enoriverstatepark #rdu #rdubaton / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BNE6PAEhcAF/
Next stop is what has been my second home since I can remember: the (free) NC Museum of Natural Sciences ❤️ From birthday parties to junior curators to summer camp to catering for @rocky_top_caters, my family has done it all! I always love coming back here to see new developments, like the Nature Research Center that opened in 2012. Make sure you visit the Naturalist Center for some hands-on exploration. This pic is from the dinosaur room, which holds the most complete skeleton of Acrocanthosaurus ever found 😱#terrorofthesouth!!! Good morning y'all! 🌅My name is Alesandra and I’m excited to share some places and spaces that I love in Raleigh with you today. I’m a NY native (born and raised on Long Island - land of pizza, bagels and Billy Joel) and have been living in Raleigh for close to 5 years now. While I miss the beaches, family and friends back in NY, Raleigh has certainly become my home. I’m kicking off today’s adventure with a view of the Raleigh Rose Garden and Amphitheater. There may not be many blooms this time of year but it’s still a perfect place for a morning stroll or just to literally stop and smell the roses. 😜 On the weekends you can usually catch a show or shop around a pop-up market here. Alright, I’ll be back soon. : @alesandra_woolley / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BN6v-VghyRk/

To end the night my wife and I took a trip out to the Koka Booth Amphitheater to view the Chinese Lantern Festival. This is a great place to mosey around with friends or family. It features multiple installations of unique lights and displays. Admission is cheap and parking is free so be sure to come out anytime before January 15 when it concludes. No purpose for this pic other than Fall makes me happy and the whole point of a staycation is happiness and doing random things you never have time to do. Can you spy the #rdubaton? One of my favorite spots on campus is the Free Expression Tunnel and painting in it is an NC State tradition! The tunnel was a way to combat graffiti during the Vietnam War. Now you’ll find everything from silly drawings to marriage proposals on the walls! My RAs have had quite a few programs that encourage students to paint the tunnel. Residents love the opportunity to leave a mark on NC State… even if it only lasts a few hours. by @victoriamthompson / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BFFGekuDhxO/
COMMUNITY TABLE…James Beard Award-winning chef Ashley Christensen RULES the Raleigh restaurant scene. Since opening @poolesdiner in 2007, she has been unstoppable, opening @chucks_raleigh, @joule_raleigh, @foxliquorbar, and her newest venture @deathandtaxesnc. But in choosing the location for dinner tonight, I knew it had to be Beasley’s Chicken and Honey. Inspired by her own Mama’s fried chicken, Ashley perfects the dish that encompasses the beauty of Southern Cuisine. Our 24-foot long community table was further decorated by delectable side dishes including creamed collard greens, Ashe Co. cheddar pimento mac+cheese custard, green bean casserole, and Mason jar Moscow Mules with candied ginger. After a feast like this, I am anxiously awaiting #poolesdinercookbook, expected Fall 2016. @beasleys_raleigh @ashley_christensen (📷: @vbwatson) Thank you RDU for kindly sharing your day with me! Good morning RDU Baton! I’m excited to be showing you around today! Most of my day is spent in Downtown Raleigh for work (@crisp.agency)! Did you know Carrboro has a fish market? Yep, for over 3 decades. They bring fresh seafood from the coast weekly and are open Thursday-Saturday. If you’re not sure what to make or how to prepare something, the staff are awesome with recommendations. Hi! I’m @jess_ekstrom 🙋 I travel around the world almost every week for work ✈️ and Raleigh continues to be my favorite city 🌰 So I’m so stoked to show you all of my favorite places! 😁 The theme of the baton today will be #DidYouKnowThat Let’s get started! Raleigh Crossfit is not new to the baton, but #DidYouKnowThat when you’re a member of @raleighcrossfit you get 4 free classes per month at @corepoweryogaraleigh (& visa versa)? So if you can’t decide where you wanna #namaste or #cleanandjerk, you can do both 💪 Isn’t it great when Raleigh businesses collaborate? RCF also does a TON of work for the community. They have a blood drive coming up on May 2nd and they’re collecting soaps for servicemen returning from duty via the USO of NC. Both RCF and Core Power have amazing instructors & they both offer a free class for first-timers…so what are you waiting for? ( @jess_ekstrom) / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BEvjIwuDh7F/
When I moved to the Triangle in 1995, North Hills Mall was in its final years (shoutout to @verticalurge) and my high school peers had flocked to Crabtree. When I moved to North Hills as an adult in 2005, the mall had given way to what you see today & the old office park was boarded up waiting for demolition. Fast forward 11 years, where giant glass mixed-use buildings have sprung up. Downtown Raleigh rightfully gets publicity for its revitalization, but North Hills is a prime example of bringing density to what was once sprawl. My only request is that the neighborhood surrounding the modern North Hills retains its 1960s charm. / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BFyssrQDh_r/
Good morning RDU! To keep the bio short, my husband and I are both midwesterners that moved to the Raleigh area from Chicago last summer. We live and I work in Morrisville, which I love because it’s centrally located between Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. I work for an engineering/construction company but won’t be showing you any of that as I’m taking the day off to do some of my favorite things (and it’s my birthday! 🎈). I’m starting the morning with a 5 mile run on a relatively new greenway trail that connects the art museum’s Reedy Creek Trail with the Crabtree Creek Trail. Running is a lifelong passion for me and the Raleigh area has an incredible system of greenways to run on - more than 100 miles worth! This one, the House Creek Trail, has been a recent favorite, and is looking beautiful on this fall day. [photo by @sara__irene] #rdubirthdaybaton #raleigh / on Instagram instagram.com/p/83FMa2Dh6S/
A Monday devoted to play means an afternoon at The Alley on Hillsborough St. 🎳 The floor is old, the equipment is old, and you have to keep your own score, but that’s what makes this place unique $5 for unlimited play/shoes and $1.50 PBRs today 🍻 Photo by @kpwier / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BAaaUaGjh8U/

“It’s a helluva start, being able to recognize what makes you happy.” Lucille Ball Good morning!! Hope your day is off to a good start! My name is Helen Grace and I’ve called Raleigh home for the past 9 years. As an autism teacher and private tutor I commute all over the triangle for work each day. Last year hectic days and long commutes in traffic had me feeling stressed. I decided to make an effort to seek out beautiful spots in the Triangle to visit as a means of stress relief and exercise. Surprisingly it worked. Today I’ll share my happy places with you. Up first, the North Carolina Museum of Art. No better place to reflect upon the day ahead than the Rodin sculpture garden. Let’s just jump right into 2016, shall we? Good morning! I’m Kendall and I’m so happy to be sharing my day with you. I love themed Baton days and New Year’s resolutions, so I decided to focus today around one of the few resolutions I haven’t broken already: Play More DefyGravity is one of my favorite places in Raleigh because it’s almost impossible to be stressed or upset here. They have wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, an Ultimate Ninja course, a dodgeball cage, and a jump area for younger kids. We’re here for Open Jump, but they also offer special times for kids under 6 and jumpers with special needs (they turn the music down and limit the number of jumpers on the floor). There are classes and special event/discount days throughout the week: GravityFit, Family Night, College Night, and ClubGravity. Now back to bouncing. Who else used to pretend they were an Olympic gymnast on their backyard trampoline? 🙋 Photo by @kpwier / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BAZ41j_jh3x/
My youngest daughter Kayla has been obsessed with horses 🐴🐴for as long as I can remember. I always thought equestrian would be way too expensive but, she was relentless in her insisting about riding horses. I was lucky enough to be introduced to @easihorse_farm from a mother of one of her classmates. Dave Pullin and his daughter Cassie are so wonderful! They are very reasonably priced and I have really seen my daughter come out of her shell the last year. Her love for equestrian has continued to grow! They also do summer camps. The reason I am not featuring a horse is because I am slightly in love with this emu that lives on the farm. I am already a crazy animal lover but I never knew I could love a giant bird! He really is a lover and always seems to be excited to see me ( can’t you see the smile on his face)😊 photo by 📷 @chelsey._.leigh / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BHAxZMZDhzL/
A couple of years ago I was introduced to @johnmulaney, a comedian who wrote for @nbcsnl and does really hilarious stand up. I’ve listened to his special, #newintown (available on Netflix!) no less than 50 times. My sister (@lilsmoles) is in town from FL so we met up for a mid-day coffee and biscuit refuel @jubalacoffee. Their original location is at Lafayette Village in North Raleigh - a bit of a hike from our part of town, so we only went for special occasions. Now that they have opened up a second location on Hillsborough Street, I have to resist the urge to go EVERY DAY. Try the almond latte and pimento cheese, egg, and country ham biscuit. Spent my afternoon answering emails & working on blog content. I began blogging when my family moved to NC & I was 9 years old. It served as a curation of my boredom during my summer as the “new girl”. Now, I’m 16 & my blog has grown to be a mashup of lifestyle content with a journal of my health, raising awareness for PCOS- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It’s grown, leading me to unbelievable opportunities (such as being featured in the summer issue of @girlslifemagazine), lifelong friendships & a love for writing. Since we are in the season of giving, I thought I would share a bit of reflection with my fellow Batoneers. This house is one of the many abandoned buildings that can be seen on my 3 block walk to school at @nccueagle, where I’m a senior studying Communications with a concentration in Journalism. Where I live is only a mile from the flourishing @downtowndurham area, but my roommate @hifilorau and I are frequently exposed to quite a different side of Durham in our neighborhood. It’s no secret that the city is experiencing a sort of renaissance thanks to things like @amerunderground (where our @runaway_brand office is), @dpacnc, and the highly acclaimed food scene. As a native to Durham, I am sincerely proud of all the city has been able to accomplish in roughly 10 years. Still, as I make this trek to campus on Thanksgiving Eve, I can’t help but remember how fortunate I am to be able to do what I do, and wonder what life is like for those who have not yet been able to participate in the revitalization effort. Will it ever reach these neighborhoods? What will the holiday season be like for them? The journalist in me stays curious, and the Durhamite in me stays passionate. / on Instagram instagram.com/p/-hKG1oDh18/
Good morning RDU! My name is Mallory, but you can call me Mal, and I’m excited to bojangle around Raleigh with the baton today. I grew up in Virginia and attended Virginia Tech (GO HOKIES!!!). After a short layover in Arlington, VA (because that’s where all good Hokies go after graduation) I moved to Raleigh. I have been here for four years now and I couldn’t be happier living in the City of Oaks. I work from home (in Boylan Heights) for an IT company (located in DC), testing SUPER exciting (read: really boring) government websites. Most mornings, you’ll find me at Raleigh Crossfit. That’s right, I drink the Crossfit Kool-Aid and always ask for a second glass. I love Crossfit, but specifically RCF. The coaching staff is unmatched. They are well-trained and invested in the safety and success of their athletes. The RCF community is among the most welcoming and encouraging group of people you could ask for at a gym. Believe it or not, this pic of Duke’s pastoral East Campus has #nofilter to get that depth of field. Like many folks in the triangle, I originally came here to attend one of the many universities in the area. The fortunes amassed from tobacco by the Dukes funded the fellowships that allowed me to get my PhD in history–I’m not super proud of that, but it’s always important to remember who and what makes possible the stuff we do in the present–whether that past is good or bad. 👻📗📘📙📕 @bottlefingers #durm #durham #durhamnc #nc #northcarolina #raleigh #chapelhill #rdu #researchtriangle #researchtrianglepark #duke #history #tobacco / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BItKsCTBLrN/

Hi all! I’m Mar (@bottlefingers) and I’ll be taking over the baton today and showing you some of my favorite spots and scenes from the triangle–mostly Durham. I’ll start with my absolute favorite landmark: the old brontosaurus across the street from the Durham Museum of Life and Science. It’s been standing since 1964. Since this is Durham, it is of course an artisanal dinosaur ;) – it was built by hand by a guy named Richard Wescott who came to the US from Britain as a “war bride” after WWII. He headed the Museum of Life and Science for many years. (You can imagine the culture shock he likely had to deal with going from London to Durham back in the 1950s. Some of us transplants to the area can probably relate! But I’m guessing none of us built a life size brontosaurus as our coping mechanism.) @bottlefingers #durm #durham #durhamnc #nc #northcarolina #raleigh #chapelhill #rdu #researchtriangle #researchtrianglepark #dinosaur #brontosaurus / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BIswAoiBOwz/
