In remembrance of, and deepest gratitude to, those heroes everywhere who sacrificed all for the greater good....

and for the valiant ones of my own country who served so well:

O beautiful

for heroes prov'd

In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country loved,

And mercy more than life.

America! America!

May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness,

And ev'ry gain divine.

O beautiful

for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

Another companion upload, get two images for the price of one, I'm ambitiously doing an interpretation of the Ray Charles classic :-)

I'm particularly pleased with the processing on this one, big thanks to the ever inspiring "moodmaster" Matt Toynbee who offered me an extreme (and extremely cool) Lightroom preset called Walk the Line. I instantly knew it gave this image it's direction, though several adjustments were done. Thanks Matt!

Thank you very much to all of you my dear Flickr friends for your so kind comments...!!!

Ray Charles, by Gwendal Larher

my favorite deceased African-American musicians!

I first met Rob Bagshaw about twenty years ago at The Record Centre, the jazz specialist shop in Loveday Street Birmingham. He was an avid customer of the shop and I a record company representative who learned more about what he was trying to sell from Ray who owned the shop than the company he worked for was able to impart. Rob is what I would call a super fan. Not just of jazz but of music in general with a great love of art and literature.

We met at Polar Bear Records in Kings Heath where my portrait of Rob was shot. Our conversation took place next door in a café which has a couple of his digital artworks hanging on the wall. They bear the artists name Drofrach. this is Charford, spelt backwards, the area of Bromsgrove in which he spent his early years.

I asked him about his first encounters with art and music.

"My dad was an old fashioned Socialist", he said, "He took the Daily Worker and I used to read it". In the pages of this publication he first encountered the work of Picasso and discovered much else that informed him culturally and politically. "We had music in the house in those pre rock n' roll days", he said, "Paul Robeson, Fats Waller and so on. I discovered rock 'n roll early on, Elvis, Little Richard, Fats Domino" Many of whom he encountered playing live later on. " At 14 my school mate and I went to see Buddy Holly in concert", he remembered fondly, "this would have been around 1958, it was life changing". He also saw Eddie Cochrane, gene Vincent and Jerry Lee Lewis. He was well and truly hooked.

"Ray Charles, What I Say, Pye International Chess releases, these things got me moving towards jazz". It was one day in the Diskery that he asked Maurice the owner "How do I get into jazz?". Typically Maurice's response was, "you ask me!", he recommended Charles Mingus Ah Hum. "I was about nineteen or twenty I suppose and began to devour all the jazz I could". He added, "I have a saying which comes from around that period, Miles, Monk, Mingus and Me, which just about sums up the music I was drawn to." He didn't go to jazz concerts at this time but continued to develop his interest and learn something of the history of the music. "I listened to a broad range of music. I recall a couple of ten inch Hank Williams albums I had". Beatlemania came along but he remained untouched, "I had Buddy Holly so I didn't need the Beatles", he said.

"I worked as a psychiatric nurse and didn't earn much money in the early sixties. I had to save up to buy jazz albums". He built up a collection gradually together with a cultural awareness of the artists producing the music and the society which spawned it.

"Because of the blues, because of soul, because of jazz and the Beats I developed an interest and awareness of the Civil Rights movement and the importance of black American music and musicians". He read all he could about the culture. "Like Ry Cooder I believe that the black Gospel quartets are the source of the greatest singing in the world", he added. Hearing Ornette Coleman was another revelation. He has his own take on the music that touches him, "Working, Steaming, Cooking and Relaxing over Kind of Blue", he says in relation to Miles' output. And Monk, "the Prestige recordings above Blue Note's Genius of Modern Jazz by a mile".

"Jimmy Giuffre was doing Americana in the Fifties", he adds with emphasis.

"I discovered Ray's Record Centre in Loveday Street and spent many pleasant hours in there talking with Nic Vipond and buying lots of music. I loved the new release section and through that discovered Esbjorn Svensson trio's From Gagarin's Point of View and ECM as a label. "Those Charles Lloyd albums are sublime", he smiles.

Record shops were important to him and continue to be so. "I loved the Record Centre and Nic just as these days I love Polar Bear and Steve", he says, "proper record shops. Those guys are like family".

"I'll never stop listening and discovering", he says, "what I've been loving lately is Playing by Old and New Dreams"

David Murray, Don Pullen, Julius Hemphill, Horace Tapscott, Bill Frisell, the names keep coming. As we parted Rob handed me a postcard which bears a photograph of blues man Jimmy Reed from the 1950's. Written on the back of it is his Take Five selection for this feature.

Take Five

Rob recommends the following Five-a-Day

Louis Armstrong Blue Again (Armstrong's strident trumpet entry!)

Ray Charles What I Say (a classic piece of R n B!)

Charles Mingus Ah Hum (Goodbye Pork Pie Hat!)

Ornette Coleman The Shape of Jazz to Come (Lonely Woman!)

Miles Davis Filles de Killimanjaro (Tony Williams' drumming is worth the price of admission alone!)

With thanks to Steve at Polar Bear and Cherry Red's Café both of York Road Kings Heath Birmingham.

Self-portrait

For the majority part of the day I am listening to music, I love it, but sometimes it gets to the point where I get saturated, even if a song from my favourite band or artist gets played it would just sound like noise. This is what I tried to illustrate with this photo, that feeling of saturation.

Ray's Music Exchange in Calumet City, Illinois has the best electric piano in the city of Chicago. It can be yours for the low price of $2000 bucks and you could take it home with you and Ray will throw in the black keys for free.

The Blues Brothers has stood the test of time as it is one of the most entertaining movies filled with great music including the late great Ray Charles.

Ray's includes a fully stocked showroom with guitars, amps, mics, tv's, and toasters. Don't mind the bullet holes next to the guitar hanging on the wall - it breaks everyone's hearts when a boy that young goes bad. Although some say the best piano in the city of Chicago has no action left in the keyboard; Ray disagreed and the patrons break out into a spirited rendition of the classic Shake A Tail Feather.

When I set out to build Ray's Music Exchange it had to have the mural of the great blue's legends but with a LEGO flair. One artist that I knew possessed the skills and quality required is the incredibly talented Greg Hyland ( www.lethargiclad.com/). I knew Greg from attending Brickworld in Chicago over the years and when I emailed him with my vision - he was instantly on board and he didn't disappoint. The mural was spot on and was everything that I had hoped.

The next step was printing Greg's art onto the brick. I didn't want to use a sticker or decal - it needed to be printed so the colors would shine. I had long been a fan of Terry Akuna's printing on LEGO and he was also excited for the project and took extra time to get it perfect printed onto the bricks. (www.bricklink.com/store/home.page?p=terryakuna#/shop?o={"showHomeItems":1})

The build was powered up with lights from www.lifelites.com

Finally my 14 year old daughter had become a pro at cutting vinyl and was able to reproduce Ray's signs with her expert font and lettering skills. She has been able to reproduce my LUG's logo for car window decals, coffee cups, shirts, and new lettering on my steam engines. macismonograms.blogspot.com/

Moon over Miami,

Shine on my love and me,

So we can stroll beside the roll,

Of the rolling sea.

Moon over Miami,

Shine on as we begin,

A dream or two that may come true,

When the tide comes in.

Hark to the song of the smiling troubadours,

Hark to the throbbing guitars,

Hear how the waves offer thunderous applause,

After each song to the stars.

Moon over Miami,

You know we're waiting for,

A little love,

A little kiss

On Miami shore.

Unchain my heart, baby let me be

Unchain my heart 'cause you don't care about me

You've got me sewed up like a pillow case

But you let my love go to waste so

Unchain my heart, oh please, please set me free

Unchain my heart, baby let me go

Unchain my heart, 'cause you don't love me no more

Ev'ry time I call you on the phone

Some fella tells me that you're not at home so

Unchain my heart, oh please, please set me free

I'm under your spell like a man in a trance

But I know darn well, that I don't stand a chance so

Unchain my heart, let me go my way

Unchain my heart, you worry me night and day

Why lead me through a life of misery

When you don't care a bag of beans for me

So unchain my heart, oh please, please set me free

About JB Rock :

I was born in Rome in 1979. I do writing since I was 12 and I’ve never stop just because – today like yesterday – I suppose there’s nothing in my life that should make me feel better. I think that every human being have a way of life, written on his DNA, and the most difficult thing – in this tour called life – is to find it, identify in and then fight to pursue it. With passion and devotion. I was lucky enough to find my way of life. You? Follow your instinct and your passion and do not be fooled by any other bullshits.

This mural by Sonny Frank is called "Old Sweet Song" and depicts 53 members of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. It includes many famous musicians such as Ray Charles, Mike Mills and Micheal Stipe of REM, The Indigo Girls, Lena Horne and Greg Allman. The plaque on the side indicates who is where.

On another note, I went to Suwanee Town Center to take a photo of this mural for our 52 weeks theme: Music. I had planned on taking just the mural. However, after last week's theme about Street Photograpy, I decided to include people in my photos! I think they are way more interesting than my photos of the mural without people! Therefore I leaned something new to add to my photography by being part of this group! I have a few others in my outtake. Normally I would wait for the people to get out of the way of the photo before shooting!

If you are unfamiliar with The Blues Brothers - stop reading this and go watch Jake and Elwood try and get the band back together!

"I'll throw in the black keys for free"
