I saw a 1cm-long black fly land on a leaf and thought "That won't male much of a photo". Then I remembered that you can discover all sorts of wonderful colours you can't see with the naked eye when you look through a macro lens. Wow, it's not "just" a black fly! I've no idea what species it is but I definitely didn't see all those colours through my own eyes. Cropped from 3:2 ratio to 4:3 maintaining the height of the original photo. Taken using the pop-up flash - a rare event for me - set to 1/32 power, with diffuser, on account of the thick overhead cloud.

STOP PRESS: I've just ID-d this as an Orange-bearded bluebottle; what a name!

I was in the Vermillion Lakes area near Banff town looking for a photo opportunity. Most people, including me, compose their photos to include Mt Rundle which is to the south. This view is roughly west.

My custom is to capture more images than I think is required for a panorama and then crop the assembled image later. I usually don't care for high aspect ratio panorama. After assembling this panorama I noticed the symmetrical aspect of the image and so little cropping was done. I did not notice this when I was capturing the frames.

Perhaps I should look more carefully a the scene I'm photographing.

The mystique of the Golden Ratio, captured on a study of a sea shell.

This image was captured for the Macro Mondays theme: "mysterious".

don't want that, sir.

no, not so much.

Geometrically it is supposed to be very pleasing for the eye. Basically (a + b)/a = a/b which turns out to be an irrational number of around 1.6... I am trying to get better at spotting it in photography, as it is a bit more complex than the rule of thirds, but where I have seen it, the results can be very nice.

Modern architecture in yesterday's world.

-Paris, France (April 2017)

Here's a new image that I must have missed during my initial passes when I went through the RAWs from this trip. I really dig the 'v' shape here. This one comes from the G61 Kalapana flow that bruddah Bruce took Kelc and I out to during our honeymoon. Good times!

A high aspect ratio wing is most efficient for long distance gliding. With bones that lock into place in the extended wings, this lasyan albatross uses a horizontal lift component to bank sharply to the right and head out to sea. At sea it will have an oscillating glide path as it rises on orographic lift off wave faces then gravity accelerates into the wave troughs to glide for thousands of miles across the Pacific. The aerodynamics of mōlī (Phoebastria immutabilis) flight are fascinating. But it is the seemingly effortless, calm beauty and aerial grace that keeps me enviously watching for hours.

Looking back at this summer's shots, I found this leftover

stack which I had not postprocessed. It's not quite perfect, but since the subject is a tiny, shiny, beauty of a damselfly (Zygoptera sp.), I am posting it up now. Exact species is unknown, though it's possibly an Eastern Forktail (Ischnura verticalis). Observed at the Montreal Botanical Garden.
