In 1979, Sergio Rapu Haoa and a team of archaeologists discovered that the hemispherical or deep elliptical eye sockets were designed to hold coral eyes with either black obsidian or red scoria pupils. The discovery was made by collecting and reassembling broken fragments of white coral that were found at the various sites. Subsequently, previously uncategorized finds in the Easter Island museum were re-examined and recategorized as eye fragments. It is thought that the moʻai with carved eye sockets were probably allocated to the ahu and ceremonial sites, suggesting that a selective Rapa Nui hierarchy was attributed to the moʻai design until its demise with the advent of the religion revolving around the tangata manu.

During the restoration work carried out in 1978 by Sergio Rapu’s team, a surprising discovery was made. The Rapanui archaeologist Sonia Haoa found fragments of white coral and a disk of red scoria while excavating near a moai knocked down and half-buried in the sand. The remains found, once assembled, formed an eye about 35 cm long, which fitted perfectly to the empty orbit of the moai.

This finding marked a milestone in the knowledge that historians had about the moai. Until that time, it was thought that the eye sockets of the statues had been empty.

Anthropologist William Mulloy had already found similar eye fragments in his excavations at Vinapu on the south coast made 20 years earlier, but it was believed that they were pieces of a dish made in coral.

Since the discovery of Sonia Haoa, more remains of coral eyes have been found in other places on Easter Island. A total of 57 pieces of moai eyes were discovered during the 1978 excavation at Ahu Nau Nau, many of which still have marks of the tools used for their manufacture.

The four fragments that make up the almost complete eye are currently on display at the Sebastian Englert Anthropological Museum on Easter Island.

The eye holes were only sculpted when they were in the ahus.

The most imposing platform and dominating the center of the landscape is the Ahu Nau Nau. His seven moais, again erected after the restoration made by the team of Sergio Rapu in 1978, stand out for the fineness of his features and details engraved on his back. It is one of the island’s best-preserved platforms because they remained hidden under the sand when they were felled, which protected them from weather conditions.

The Bay of the Kings

Anakena, also called Hanga Ra´u o te Ariki (Bay of the Great Kings), is the place where the two great canoes of the mythical King Hotu Matua and his sister Ava Rei Pua, together with their followers, are supposed to have arrived. In the head of the bay on both sides, there are three terraces resembling temples built with enormous blocks.

In the center of the beach area is the magnificent Ahu Nau Nau, about 70 meters (230 feet) long, which has between 10 and 12 Moai (statues) associated with it. The ends of the platform are slightly elevated so that it looks like a ship. It was restored by Sergio Rapu between 1978 and 1980. Its present five Moai are the best preserved of all those still on the Island due to having spent a long time buried in the sand. They represent deceased young men of royal lineage. During the excavations, several pavements of older Ahu (ceremonial platforms) were uncovered, as well as remains of residences, an extraordinary eye from a statue made of white coral with a pupil of red scoria, and the body of a rare female Moai. Both the eye and the female Moai are on exhibit at the P. S. Englert Anthropological Museum.

On the eastern side of the bay, there is another platform with a single statue, Ahu Ature Huki, which was re-erected in 1956 by a group of islanders under the direction of the then village mayor, Pedro Atán, at the request of the explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who was holding his first excavations on the Island. This statue is of rather crude construction and wider set than those on Ahu Nau Nau and is supposed to be on the site of where the mythical king lived.

On the extreme left side of the beach is a third platform, Ahu Niho Pou, without statues and almost covered by the sand. On one of the stone blocks of the façade is a reproduction of a symbol of the Rongo Rongo (talking tablets) script, which, according to tradition, was associated with Anakena.

The best time to visit the Ahu Nau Nau and take pictures is in the early morning, when the sun illuminates the faces of the statues, and there are usually fewer tourists.

"They're no rocks," said Carlos Edmunds, the president of the Council of Elders, of the 10 moai around the world, lava rock sculptures carved by the ancient inhabitants of Easter Island that have been kept in Museums for the last century and a half. "The Moai(s) embody the spirit of ancestors, almost like our grandfathers. This is what we want returned to our island – not just statues."

Carlos Edmunds is confident of securing the return of one other moai from the Chilean mainland, kept in the coastal city of Viña del Mar.

Breaking News:

Camilo Rapu expressed his gratitude to the people of La Serena for the intention of returning the moai on March 14, 2019, "it is a spiritual importance that the moai have for my culture, as part of my family, my ancestors, we are very happy."

Camilo Rapu also highlighted the "example" that La Serena gave by showing his willingness to return the moai, "we are grateful because La Serena's people were the first to support us in this historic demand of the Rapa Nui people, we have requested nationally and internationally all the moai distributed and the first to react and understand our demand was the town of La Serena".

In gratitude, the idea came from the Ma’u Henua Indigenous Community to carve a moai with materials from the area, which was later baptized as "La Serena Rani Tea" which means "white sky."

The Easter Island statues were candidates for the New Seven Wonders of the World and finished eighth in the poll.

I don't know how the modern statue of Christ the Redeemer in the city of Rio won the vote against Rapa Nui. I have an idea!

The best preserved statues on the island.

Ahu Nau Nau is the most elaborate and best-preserved platform of the three that were built in Anakena. When the statues were knocked down during the clashes between the various clans of the island, they were left buried in the sand on the beach, which allowed them to be more protected from erosion than the others.

The restoration work carried out between 1978 and 1980 by the team led by the Rapanui archaeologist Sergio Rapu, restored its ancient splendor and made it one of the most attractive archaeological sites on the island.

Currently, a reconstruction that corresponds to the last historical phase of the ahu, called Nau Nau III, can be observed. It consists of a platform about 60 meters long by 12 wide. Seven statues stand on it. The first four from the left are practically intact and are crowned with a pukao, the headdress or chignon made of red volcanic scoria from the quarry of Puna Pau. These moai, along with one in Tongariki and the Ahu Ko Te Riku in Tahai, are the only ones on the island that carry a pukao.

The fifth moai is also very well preserved but lacks the pukao, the sixth is missing the head and the seventh, barely shows half a torso.

The surface of the statues, which are fairly uniform and stylized, is very polished and the features of the face, nose, ears and hands are finely carved and are somewhat more pointed than in other images. Even the pukao are very well worked, highlighting that of the first statue with an unusual conical shape.

On the right side of the ahu, there are remains of other pukao and a moai lying face up, quite eroded. The latter has the eye sockets uncut, so it is possible that it was never erected on the platform. Further to the right, next to the remains of the foundations of a boat-house or hare paenga, there is another head of rounded shape on the ground, belonging to an older statue. From the remains found, it is believed that some 12 moai were part of the platform at some point, although there probably never were more than eight on the ahu at the same time.

The ritual platform Ahu Nao Nao, on which there are seven statues of moai, is the largest in the area of Anakena beach on the Northern coast of the island. Its excavations and subsequent reconstruction were carried out first by the Norwegian archaeological expedition of 1955-56 under the leadership of Thor Heyerdahl, and then continued in the 70s of the last century by a group of archaeologists led by Sergio Rapu Haoa.

Ahu Nau Nau is symbolically one of the most important ahus on Easter Island as it is located on the beautiful beach of Anakena, the place where, as the story goes, King Hotu Matu’a first landed with his entourage to populate the island.

The ahu was restored in 1978 by a team led by Sergio Rapu, the island’s first professional archaeologist. It was also here that the white coral and red scoria eye was found, which is currently exhibited in the museum and has served in the recreation of the true image of the upright moai statues on their altars.

Confinement jour 28 / Lockdown Day 28

(Nikon F100 + Ektachrome 200)

Bon confinement à tous et "Take care !"
