The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), which occupies the same niche as the bald eagle in the Palearctic. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.
The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 m (13 ft) deep, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide, and 1 metric ton (1.1 short tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.
Bald eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed". The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are about 25 percent larger than males. The yellow beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.
The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States and appears on its seal. In the late 20th century it was on the brink of extirpation in the contiguous United States. Populations have since recovered, and the species was removed from the U.S. government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995, and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the contiguous states on June 28, 2007.

In the lush expanse of Lagos Yaguacaca, I had the fortune to photograph the enigmatic Crane Hawk, Geranospiza caerulescens. Perched stoically amongst the verdant canopy, the hawk's grey plumage and intense red eyes command attention, embodying the raw essence of the predators of the skies. The fine details of its feathers, captured against the soft blur of the Colombian rainforest, highlight the bird's adaptability to its environment – a perfect subject for the art of avian photography.
The image speaks to the bird's solitary nature, with its gaze fixed intently beyond the frame, suggesting a narrative of survival and dominion within this biodiverse landscape. As a photographer, such moments are a delicate dance of patience and readiness, waiting for nature to unveil its stories in its own unpredictable tempo.

In May 2012, my family and I arrived in Ketchikan, Alaska, to take a short boat ride for a day hike in the Tongass National Forest. A hard rain graced our walk to the boats. On the way I spotted this beauty. One of the most photogenic of the raptors, the American Bald Eagle never disappoints, whether in flight or roosting.

The Pharaoh's chicken,
Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), also called the white scavenger vulture, is a small Old World vulture and the only member of the genus Neophron. It is widely distributed from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa to India. The contrasting underwing pattern and wedge-shaped tail make it distinctive in flight as it soars in thermals during the warmer parts of the day. Egyptian vultures feed mainly on carrion but are opportunistic and will prey on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They also feed on the eggs of other birds, breaking larger ones by tossing a large pebble onto them.

Fact; Young eagles can appear to be bigger than their parents, but this is due to their fledging feathers. These feathers act like training wheels while the eagle needs extra help while learning to fly.
In this compelling frame, the Swallow-tailed Kite, scientifically known as Elanoides forficatus, is showcased with a striking clarity. “Fly! Fly! Fly!”
The Lord blesses me all the time, especially with my photography. I was alone in Cades Cove searching for wildlife when I heard crows mobbing a predator. Mobbing occurs when a group of crows find a predator and call their buddies in to pester them.
I went towards the mobbing. Before I got there—short-eared owls took to the air. It reminds me of the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz, telling the monkeys to “Fly! Fly! Fly!”
