Cast members perform during a rehearsal at the Vicenza Soldiers’ Theatre Sept. 24.

Soldiers’ Theatre opens Sept. 27 with “Random Laughter”, a production of short comedies where laughter is the prime ingredient.

The short comedies include: Oprah Made Me Do It; The Hard Cel; Check Please; Eve & Adam: The Untold Story; Forty to Life; Finger Food; 1-800 and Nice Tie.

“‘Random Laughter’ is the perfect chance to get away from it all and relax, enjoy and laugh at a hilarious collection of short adult comedies here at Soldiers’ Theatre,” said Jerry Brees, U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza Soldiers’ Theatre director.

Each short comedy explores a slice of life and includes stories that are as much fun for the actors as they are for the audience according to Brees.

“The extremely talented cast will keep the audience laughing for the entire performance,” he added.

Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.

Ticket Price is $12. Make reservations at 634-7281 or 0444-71-7281.

Here in Wyoming, random checkpoints are illegal by law enforcement - except in national parks, in which case they must advertise the forthcoming checkpoint in the legal ads of the prominent local newspaper.

A workaround for this restriction is to train non-LE agents to do the dirty work. Here, a tourist is stopped by drug sniffing moose before being allowed to continue his otherwise peaceful drive.

The historically renovated Hilton President Hotel is the jewel of Kansas City. Here are some facts that are posted near the lobby:

The massive columns in the lobby are made of Kasota Marble and the floors of Tennessee Marble. The Woodwork is antique mahogany.

All of the marble and terrazzo floors in the lobby and on the 2nd and 12th floors are original to the hotel. The Aztec floor is made of irregular broken marble and stone laid at random as was the custom with the Aztecs.

The four columns originally in the Aztec Ballroom represented monuments erected every five years by the Aztecs.

The garbage refrigeration plant was an innovation in handling garbage. All of the garbage of the hotel was placed in cans in a refrigeration room and frozen to remove obnoxious odors before being hauled away.

Each of the 453 sleeping rooms had combination shower and tubs, circulating ice water, and softened water for bathing. The rooms were equipped with electric fans and valet doors, which have a double door for service and for ventilation. The furniture was all walnut and the beds were equipped with double springs.

There were originally five Presidential Suites, all located on the Southwest corner of the building on various floors. These suites consisted of a large living room and two bedrooms with two baths. Each suite was furnished in various periods, ranging from George Washington to the then present day.

The first General Manager of the President Hotel was H. Edgar Gregory from New York.

More than 1,000 people, guests of the hotel, and management attended the formal dinner dance which marked the official opening of the hotel on February 5, 1926.

The Drum Room included a bar in the shape of a drum, and a full service restaurant which featured some of the countries hottest touring musicians. It was the age of Cuban cool, a strong influence of Cuban society was sweeping its way across the country, it was Kansas City’s place to see and be seen. According to a guest who visited the Drum Room in 1948 “it was just an exciting place to visit, it was the coolest place in town and everyone knew it”.

The Drum Room, now an upscale cosmopolitan restaurant & lounge, has re-opened and the atmosphere is just as cool as it was in 1941. Who knows, you just might feel the spirits of the Rat Pack or Duke Ellington, or even Frank Sinatra when you swing by.

Other celebrity appearances in this historic venue included Sammy Davis Jr., Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, The Marx Brothers and Pasty Cline.
