Apologies for my laziness lately - I've got a lot of photostreams to catch up on. Have barely even opened photoshop or pressed a shutter for a couple of weeks now, I think going back to work after xmas was a bit of a culture shock, hopefully I'll be back on track soon.
In the spirit of getting back into things here's this morning's random photoshopping... Just 3 images overlayed at various blend modes with a couple of layers of texture and noise. No particular reason, just looked appealing to me...
Winter in a summer town can sure get sleepy. Digby relies heavily on tourist traffic, even when it's just folks from elsewhere in the province. We're all less likely to walk these streets when a chill blows up our backs. Commercial spaces in rural villages face an almost breathless turnover, if those who own them are even lucky enough to find new tenants. Used to be that landlords on a downtown street really had it made. Now, vacant storefronts are a common occurrence, and with every closing, a desperate rush to fill them again commences. On the upside, lower rent allows for as wider array of random notions — so you find a lot of businesses opening that otherwise wouldn't. When I ran my art gallery over in Bridgetown, I paid just $100/month. Enough to make me wish I could've lived there. The near-total lack of overhead meant that I could easily fail upwards. Took eight months to make my first sale, and turning a profit took three years. But at least it didn't cost much to try.
In view here is one shop I'm really rooting to survive. The lovely little Sea Biscuit Café, for my money the best of its kind in Digby County. As a lunch spot only, it's long gone dark with twilight falling. I'm among the last of the foot traffic, and cars come sporadic as night falls easy on a town with not much nightlife. That doesn't bother me one bit. I make my own amusements in the blue and easy gloom. Gentle as I carry on through the end of a midwinter melt. The busy buzz of summer is about as far away as it gets, and by the time that strangers start to fill this street from all over — I'll be anywhere else but here. The draw for me is when darkness wrestles restless to the ground. For these whispering hours of wondering strangers who either notice me or not in the shadows. I'm one with all that's unseen.

this balloon was floating around in the 30th street El station one day.
For the first organized Random Walks NYC, I decided to use a pocketful of slips marked: left, right and forward, instead of flipping a coin. No backward slips were included, because that would just have been too frustrating. As it is we ended up walking down the same stretch of First Avenue twice. But the gods of random were kind to us, bringing to us some really cool sculptures in community gardens, and some interesting people along the way.
I was tagged on Facebook to write down 25 random things about myself. Thought I'd do the same for my flickr friends. Try it, it's harder than you think.
