Ramsgate Harbour, July 2008

Entrance to the Ramsgate Tunnels located on the Esplanade.

 

Ramsgate Tunnel is 1,638 yards long and was built to connect the Kent Coast Railway in the Dumpton area with Ramsgate Harbour Station located on the Esplanade.

 

The line and station was open between the 5th October 1863 and the 2nd July 1926.

 

The tunnel has a gradient of 1 in 75 throughout it’s length.

1001 stands at Ramsgate on the return leg of the Canterbury Trail railtour from Dungeness to Hastings via London Blackfriars.

Now open to the public, the former mainline railway tunnel to Ramsgate and the deep level air raid shelters are proving to be popular attractions.
