Iftar is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.

Iftar (Arabic: إفطار رمضان, romanized: Iftar Ramadan), also known as futoor (from فطور, fuṭūr, 'breakfast'), is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. They break their fast at the time of the call to prayer (adhan) for the evening prayer.

The Wazir Khan Mosque (Punjabi/Urdu: مسجد وزیر خان Masjid Wazīr Khān) in Lahore, Pakistan, is famous for its extensive faience tile work. It has been described as 'a mole on the cheek of Lahore'. It was built in seven years, starting around 1634–1635 AD, during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan. It was built by Hakim Shaikh Ilm-ud-din Ansari, a native of Chiniot, who rose to be the court physician to Shah Jahan and a governor of Lahore. He was commonly known as Wazir Khan, a popular title bestowed upon him (the word Wazir means 'minister' in Urdu and Persian). The mosque is inside the Inner City and is easiest accessed from Delhi Gate. The mosque contains some of the finest examples of Qashani tile work from the Mughal period.

You mean you can't even drink water?" a friend asked me this question with a bewildered look on her face, she couldn't believe that fasting during the month of Ramadan meant I would not drink or eat from sunrise to sunset for an entire month.

As my friend stood there looking bewildered, I thought, is it really that hard to believe that Muslims refrain from food and drink during the fast? We fast the whole day knowing that we will be ending our fast with the setting of the sun, and in the context of a world where many live in poverty, where hunger and thirst for many become a way of life, our fasting really is a simple duty. This is the spirit of Ramadan, it is about understanding the feeling of hunger, it is about building empathy, self-restraint and piousness.

Why We Fast in Islam ?

for all devout Muslims, Ramadan holds such deep teachings; it is not a month about food, or about socialising in the evenings in Ramadan tents, or watching Ramadan shows on TV, Ramadan is about learning compassion, it's about "cultivating our piety".

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar (hijri calendar), we consider it to be the most holy and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. Ramadan is the month when the first verses of the holy Quran were revealed.

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all Muslims who are mentally and physically able and that have reached puberty are required to fast during this month.

Those who are sick, travelling, pregnant, menstruating or nursing women, are not required to fast, however, those who are unable to fast for these reasons must make up the days they missed fasting upon recovery or return, or after weaning.

In the month of Ramadan, we begin the fast with the sunrise and end the fast with the sunset, or with the fourth Muslim prayer of the day (maghrib prayer). The fast is ended each evening with a meal called iftar and the last meal we have is in the morning right before dawn which is called suhur.

Spiritual experience

The fast of Ramadan is not about physical deprivation, it is meant to be deeply spiritual experience. In the holy Quran it is stated that the purpose of the fast is to develop a quality which in Arabic we call taqwa.

Taqwa can be defined as, "worshipping God as if you see Him, because if you don't, He sees you". Taqwa is about cultivating an awareness that God is always watching. For example, when I fast nobody but God knows if I actually have observed the entire fast or if I secretly cheated. So in order to resist the temptation to cheat during the fast, I must remember that God is always watching and will see any lapse.

This sense of taqwa is carried over into other areas of our lives, hence by fasting we foster a habit of piousness, self-restraint, and an inner-balance. For devout Muslims Ramadan is a month of worship; prayer and recitation of the Quran during this month are pivotal, and it is common practice during this month to provide food/iftar to others especially the poor on a daily basis.

Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was sent down: this Book is a perfect guidance for mankind and consists of clear teachings which show the right way and are a criterion of Truth and falsehood. Therefore from now on whoever witnesses it, it is obligatory on him to fast the whole month, but if one be ill or on a journey, he should make up for the same number by fasting on other days. Allah desires to show leniency to you and does not desire to show any hardship. Therefore, this method is being shown to you so that you may complete the number of Fasting days and glorify Allah for the Guidance He has shown to you and be grateful to Him. (Holy Quran 2:185)

Saturday 23 September is the first day of Ramadan.

It is a month of fasting for muslims around the globe from sunrise to sunset.

It is not only about fasting from food, its about being good, moral peace keeping people. More importantly, it is a bout a spiritual purification that comes from being deprived of the basic necessities of life in order to appreciate the blessing bestowed upon us, and to realize that there are people worse off, and that it is our duty to aid them. It can be seen as a detoxification period that trains the body and mind to hopefully be the best one we can be.

So I wish you all without exception ..

^_^

This is the third year I celebrate the month of Ramadan during my time with you all on flickr, I would like to try something different with you all this year... (Read on to the end if you are interested in what it is. )

Ramadan is a month not only about fasting from sunrise to sunset, but it helps train a person to be the best they can possibly be by being good, moral peace keeping people.

During Ramadan I realize I am most aware about what I say, especially because I am someone who swears a lot in moments of frustration, but in Ramadan I know I have to hold my tongue, or I wouldn't be fasting. Throughout this time I reflect on people and this world as well as the afterlife. The most significant question I ask myself is how can I serve this world the best way I possibly can either in a small or big way? I see the physical world as a test; this test is what decides on where I will reside in the hereafter.

This year I would like to suggest something to my non Muslim friends here on flickr, to at least try one day of fasting. What I mean when I say fasting is, waking up before sunrise and having breakfast, and not breaking that fast with water or any type of food and most importantly any swearing or fowl language until the sun sets the same day.

If any of you try it, please share your story with us. I’m curious to see what fasting means to a person who has never done it since they were children.

I wish you all without exception ..

May we come out of it as better versions of ourselves, benefiting ourselves and the ones around us.

The light was better from the other side, so I turned the photo 180°. Next time I have to think to turn the book. :-)

The Quran is written from right to left. The Number of every verse is always at the end.

(Arabic)

DER HEILIGE KORAN ( GERMAN )

2 - Die Kuh

Im Namen Allahs, des Gnädigen, des Barmherzigen.

QURAN ( ENGLISH ) ( BY M.H. SHAKIR)

2 - The Cow

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

183. O you who believe! fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard (against evil).

184. For a certain number of days; but whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; and those who are not able to do it may effect a redemption by feeding a poor man; so whoever does good spontaneously it is better for him; and that you fast is better for you if you know.

185. The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance to men and clear proofs of the guidance and the distinction; therefore whoever of you is present in the month, he shall fast therein, and whoever is sick or upon a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire for you difficulty, and (He desires) that you should complete the number and that you should exalt the greatness of Allah for His having guided you and that you may give thanks.
