The "High Chaparral" village ( Kampong Buah Pala, oldest cattle farm in Penang) celebrated its Ponggal Festival (Harvest Thanksgiving) from 14-18 January.

"High Chaparral" originally an Indian cattle rearing community who were the biggest suppliers of fresh milk in Penang last century - narrowly escaped demolition by developers last year. This year's Ponggal was therefore doubly meaningful for the villagers.

The Ponggal is a 4-day harvest thanksgiving festival : a tradition occasion for giving thanks to nature for its bounty of food especially rice and milk. The 4-day festival culminated with traditional festivities on Sunday (18 Jan).

It was a test of manhood for young men at the 100th annual Ponggal festival at the “High Chaparral” of Penang.

In honour of the Harvest Festival, the Tamil community gathered to give thanks for the year’s prosperity and prove their worth through a series of daring competitions.

Groups of youths faced off with bulls, weighing over 400kg, in an effort to yank off garlands from their horns.

Each garland contained RM100 to be shared among the successful group of bull chasers.

Woman working at white desert in Kutch

Had the pleasure of meeting Rajendra of Meru Cabs, after a very nice dinner at my in-laws place Saturday evening.

He speaks Telugu, Hindi, English, passable Tamil & Kannada, and, to boot, Arabic, due to his stint in Kuwait! However, he referred to it as Arabi.

He was letting me in on a few practices of his fellow drivers, which was giving his company a bad name with customers.

The company has about 1,000 cabs in HYD, of which about 700 are in service. The others are off the road either due to their being serviced or the drivers going AWOL.

The drivers are all gung-ho about a customer going to the airport, but anything else they are cool with even tearing up the bill. How that happens, Rajendra explained: When a customer calls up Meru Cabs, five drivers are given a chance to bid for the same. Looking at their current position and the pick-up point, they can accept or reject any incoming message. Needless to say, the drop-off point is communicated only AFTER a driver bids, using some heuristics such as: If a message comes with a lead time of 20 minutes, it's a local drop; more than 30 minutes, it's an airport drop.

Of course, the driver might be served a local drop in the guise of an airport drop. In such cases, he might decide to "tear the bill", i.e., print the bill and incur the charges of 30 bucks for the drop that never happened, 50 for the convenience charge (of booking over the phone) and a penalty of 100. All in all, INR 180 and an unsatisfied customer. Further, the recalcitrant driver isn't sent any more messages for the next four hours.

Rajendra is dead against such practices, especially after his stint in Kuwait. The other day, he went and picked up a family that saw three torn bills. He ferried them all over the place, took them shopping, and ended up with a commission of INR 10,000 from the shop!

He was saying that folks who aren't interested in serving should stay at home.

Here's a guy who lives up to the Master's idea of service:

| If you want to serve properly, you should completely forget yourself

He's an Aries Dragon::

| In the Aries/Dragon, we find a crackling combination of raw Aries energy and Dragon pluck and guile. It's an unbeatable concoction. Aries/Dragon burns to get ahead in life. Nothing can stop the brand of will and enterprise born into this subject. Solidly built and disgustingly healthy, this person exudes sexuality.…

About Gangai Konda Cholapuram

Gangaikonda Cholapuram was erected as the capital of the Cholas by Rajendra Chola I, the son and successor of Rajaraja Chola, the great Chola who conquered a large area in South India at the beginning of the 11th century C.E. It occupies an important place in the history of India. As the capital of the Cholas from about 1025 C.E. for about 250 years, the city controlled the affairs of entire south India, from the Tungabhadra in the north to Ceylon in the south. The great temple of Siva at this place is next only to the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur in its monumental nature and surpasses it in sculptural quality.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu.

The ancient city exists as a heritage town in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu. It became the capital of the Chola dynasty in 1025 during the reign of Rajendra Chola I, and served as the Chola capital for around 250 years. The town is about 70 kilometres northeast of Thanjavur city.

The great temple of Brihadeeswarar Temple at this place is next only to the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur in its monumental nature and surpasses it in sculptural quality. The surviving temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram was completed in 1035 AD. Rajendra emulated the temple built by his father after his victory in a campaign across India that Chola era texts state covered Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Bengal. After his victory, he demanded that the defeated kingdoms send pots of Ganges River water and pour it into the well of this temple.

After Fall this is my first photo. I always used to wonder how the apple wall papers are made. I am no photoshop guru. So I thought of creating similar effect using smoke and my camera. I did little bit of research. It took me a while to figure out what goes into capturing smoke. I won't say I nailed it but am quite satisfied with the output. Next time might use better smoke source instead of incandescent sticks or use more incandescent sticks
