Night shot of dining room lighting. Long exposure to bring out the wood floor under the very soft light.

This is the almost completed tray ceiling in the dining room. Each of the three tray ceilings is very different. This one is a box, raised 15 inches above the normal ceiling line. The entryway has an irregular pentagon about 8 inches deep. The kitchen one is filled with differing heights and angles and has lots of visual interest. This tray will have a crown molding halfway up with a rope light inside.

Here is the next step in the project with the crown molding and rope light installed.

Crown moulding and lighting installed, Entertainment center built in, TV installed. Painting done except touch up. Still need the carpets and window shades. This shot emphasizes the crown molding in the recessed box and around the perimeter. Here is the first sketch I made of the concept for the room from several months ago. The first color mock up I did on the computer is also interesting to compare.

Dining Room Rope Lighting - Underexposed to show the detail in the trim mouldings. The chandelier has not been mounted yet.

The family room is complete except for one major detail. The carpets were supposed to go in this week but the %@#$& person who measured them added it up wrong. Now, 2 to 3 more weeks. I painted the floor white for the time being, and we moved the sofa into the room.

Costco Home Decorating gets an F- for customer service. Honestly, when I actually had a job, if a customer did not get what he expected from me, I gave him a call. Always. No doubt of it. It might not be comfortable or easy to make that call, but you do it. Then you try really hard not to screw up the next customer. Costco and their in-home services people do not get it. We tried 5 times to reach them about the mis-measurement and have not received a return call. That should know that this is the best way to turn a miffed customer into a dissed customer who will do nasty mean things like spread the word from here to Timbuktu about the lousy customer service at Costco Home Decorating.

A few weeks later it was all worked out.

Entryway Rope Lighting - the center mounting is for a recessed ceiling fixture. This picture has gotten lots of views; many more than the view of the finished project.

Detail of finishing in the coffered ceiling. This is complete except for painting. It took a lot of pain and suffering to get to this point but it does look good.

There are four photos in this series. This is #4.

#1 - This is how it looked early on, when the project started to go badly.

#2 - A better plaster and tile guy begins fixing the work.

#3 completed raised ceiling, at night.

The family room project is nearing completion. The room is painted and the TV is installed. The window treatments and lighting are complete. The carpet ... well, they screwed up. The designer measured for the carpet and added 15'9" plus 15'9" equals 30'9". Oops. Now we have to wait for an entirely new piece to be delivered at the correct length of 31'6".

My crown moulding project. This is my first time installing crown mouldings. To make the job a bit easier I've purchased these corner blocks which eliminate the need for a precise cut.

I spend 40% of my life losing things and 50% of my life trying to find things. Now where could my cordless drill have gotten to?

By the way, 40% + 50% = 90%. Yikes, I've forgotten where I put 10% of me.

Simpson Strong-Tie steel reinforcement for the main beams. This is earthquake country so steel really helps the survivability of the structure.

Showing the height difference between the 'standard' or outer ceiling and the raised inner area. 15 inches is excellent to show depth and contain lights including recessed and rope lighting.

The ceiling structure is complete. I am ready to begin wiring the recessed lights.

Most of the ceiling wallboard has been installed. The lights are all installed. I still have some insulation to install and speakers wires must be hidden before closing the ceiling up completely.

The ceiling begins to take shape. Framing is done, electrical is done. The first few pieces of sheetrock are in place.

Here is the view from the front door toward the dining room. The new entry to the kitchen is at right.

This shows the pattern with the main beams (double beams, lower left & right) going north-south. The upper stringers go left-right .

Here is the kitchen area from our walnut creek #homeremodel . There used to be a wall dividing that space in half! Galley kitchen turning into an #openconcept great room. We also #raisedceiling #baliconstruction
