"Watch out! Rafa!"

Melbourne

2018

A tus pies, Rafa Nadal, ¡enhorabuena! "VamosRafa"

Leyenda"

This sculpture of Rafael Nadal adorns the entrance to the Roland Garros tennis complex in Paris, France, site of the the French Open; the only one of the four grand slam tournaments played on clay. Nadal has won the French Open a mere 14 times, an unparalleled mark that likely will never be broken. In fact, it's the most times that anyone has ever won a single grand slam title. Nadal holds almost every record for success on clay. Besides his success on clay, Nadal has won 8 other grand slam titles including two each at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and four U.S. Open titles. This gives him 22 grand slam titles, second only to Novak Djokovic, plus he won the gold medal in singles at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the gold medal in men's doubles at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Marc López. Nadal turned pro in 2001, quickly setting a new standard in clay court tennis, and having unparalleled success as a teenager. Now at age 38, Nadal is likely going to retire this year probably after the Paris Olympics where he will have one last chance to compete at Roland Garros.

Rafael "Rafa" Nadal Parera is a Spanish professional tennis player, currently ranked world No. 1 in men's singles.

Rafael Nadal prepares to unleash another forehand in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open in Melbourne. Nadal's forehand is one of the most unique and lethal shots in the history of tennis carrying him to 22 grand slam singles titles, the 2nd most in the history of men's tennis. Due to the enormous amount of spin generated by this stroke, his forehand is especially effective on clay courts where the ball jumps up and forward when it contacts the court. This has propelled him to 14 French Open titles over his long career, a mark that will likely never be broken. Unfortunately for Nadal in the match, he suffered a hip injury late in the second set and lost to American Mackenzie McDonal even though he toughed it out to finish the match in typical Nadal fashion.

PO: At the end of the men's tournament, Novak Djokovic won his record 10th AO title and his 22nd grand slam men's singles title to tie Nadal for most all time. Djokovic has since passed everyone in 2023 winning two more grand slam titles for a total of 24, another mark that will probably never be broken.

This was taken at Wimbledon a few years ago and is an appreciation post on Rafa's incredible career. Rafael Nadal was honoured at Roland Garros on Sunday (25 May 2025) in a special farewell ceremony that celebrated his extraordinary legacy in Paris. In a poignant tribute, the 14-time champion took a final bow on the Court Philippe-Chatrier, the stage where he carved out his legacy.
