Race Rocks are a set of small islands/islets in the Strait of Juan de Fuca about 16 km (10 miles) southwest of the City of Victoria, B.C. It sits in Canadian waters in the strait. The name comes from the very swift current that sometimes occurs through the area. The lighthouse was one of the first two to be built on the west coast of Canada. It was constructed in 1859 to 1860 and first lit in December 1860. It is the only lighthouse on Canada's west coast made of stone construction. The light is 24.4 metres (80 feet) tall and remains an active aid to navigation. The light was automated in 1997. At that time Pearson College became guardians of the station and surrounding ecological reserve. While I have seen distant views of the light, this was my first opportunity to photograph it fairly closely while on a whale watching trip.

The male and female Common Redstart were quite determined to bring the most food possible to the younglings. It looked like they were racing; who brings the most food to the younglings wins a free day ;)

At first, the weather wasn't cooperating much on my trip to Cape Cod last Saturday, with overcast gray skies. However, much to my surprise, when I got to Race Point beach in Provincetown at the end of the road, the sky opened up and the most interesting clouds emerged, I've only rarely seen this sudden change in the cloudscape, It transformed the scenery completely.

Happy Wednesday all!

Race Rocks Light is one of the first two lighthouses that were built on the west coast of Canada, financed by the British Government and illuminated in 1860. It is the only lighthouse on that coast built of rock, purportedly quarried in Scotland, and topped with sandstone quarried on Gabriola Island

Often in life, the preparation for the race is more draining then the actual race its self.

With Redwoods standing metaphorically as nature's implacable judges, while humans race by on their jet trails, from earth up into the skies, leaving destruction in their wake, and threatening the existence of all. Hopefully still not too late to heed nature's warning, written here in the clouds...

Oh to be out there on the open seas riding the wind.

Vanwall was a motor racing team and racing car constructor that was active in Formula One during the 1950s. Founded by Tony Vandervell, the Vanwall name was derived by combining the name of the team owner with that of his Thinwall bearings produced at the Vandervell Products factory at Acton, London. Originally entering modified Ferraris in non-championship races, Vanwall constructed their first cars to race in the 1954 Formula One season. The team achieved their first race win in the 1957 British Grand Prix, with Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks sharing a VW 5, earning the team the distinction of constructing the first British-built car to win a World Championship race.

This green Vanwall, XPT 425, was built in 2000 and first registered in 2006.

Nouka Baich / Boat Race is a traditional sport of Bangladesh.

With riverine Bangladesh's geography being dominated by the world's largest delta, the country has over 230 rivers in its terrain. The rivers have played an important role in the livelihoods of the native Bengali people.

Common in rural areas, Nouka Baich is a very old tradition of the folk Bengali culture going back centuries. Its popularity in urban areas increased in the 18th century. The various Nawab families throughout Mughal Bengal were also known for organising races and the use of Sari gan started to become more popular.

Nouka Baich was also common during the British rule in the Sylhet region after the rainy season when much of the land goes under water. The long canoes were referred to as khel naos (meaning playing boats) and the use of cymbals to accompany the singing was common.

The main "boat race" in Kuching is the annual Sarawak Regatta, which includes the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta, along the Kuching Waterfront.

Evening race. Swedish banker and industrialist Marcus Wallenberg´s 8 mR yacht Ilderim racing in the Sandhamn regatta in 1936. My restoration and digital hand colorization of the original BW image in the Swedish Maritime Museum archive (digitaltmuseum.se). The photographer is not known.

"Ilderim was built in 1936 for banker and industrialist Marcus Wallenberg to participate in the Berlin Olympics held in Kiel. The boat was designed by the famous Swedish yacht architect Tore Holm. Ilderim proved to be a fast boat during the Olympics, winning several races. However, to Wallenberg's great disappointment, Ilderim was disqualified in the seventh race following an incident with the Finnish yacht Cheerion. Film footage taken from a zeppelin airship was used as evidence in the situation, and historical accounts blame the political climate of Germany at the time for the treatment. In the final standings, Ilderim finished fourth, with Italy and Germany surpassing it for the podium positions. To Wallenberg's delight, Ilderim won the European Championship, the Coppa 'd Italia, in Geneva the following year. After the war years, Ilderim continued competing in England's Solent and the Riviera. Over the years, it has called ports in France, Portugal, Ireland, and Scotland its home before arriving in Finland in 2010."

(IEMA)

Ilderim will participate in the IEMA World Cup 2025 in Turku, Finland (August 2 - 9).
