Sandhill Crane, East Lake Tohopekaliga, Lakefront Park & Marina, St. Cloud, Florida. I'm pretty sure that my Florida friends are getting kind of tired of my Sandhill Crane photos. They probably think of them the same way I think of squirrels. I'm just so fascinated by these gentle giants. Seeing them by the side of the road or in someone's yard, to me, is like seeing a dinosaur. One time my husband was rocketing down I-4 at about 80 miles an hour and I started yelling, "SANDHILL CRANES...PULL OVER!!". Yeah, that didn't happen. Title quote lyrics from the song Crazy Legs by Gene Vincent, 1956.
Grace Harwar,"the last full-rigger afloat", photographed by Allan C. Green in Australia. The 266 ft 7 in ship was built in 1889 by Hamilton & Co (Glasgow) for W. Montgomery in London, and sailed for the original owner until 1913, when she was sold to the Finnish Delfin Company in Helsinki. Three years later the Åland Islands (Finland) shipowner Gustaf Erikson bought Grace Harwar.
My restoration and colorization of the original image in the Victoria State Library archive. No date is given, but the library also has a photo of the crew by Green, including a life buoy with the text "Grace Harwar, Helsingfors" (Helsinki), which could indicate that the picture shown here was shot in 1913 - 1916.
Here is a quote from Georg Kåhre´s book The Last Tall Ships (edited by Basil Greenhill) published by Conway Maritime Press in 1977:
"Grace Harwar was never rerigged as a barque, as were so many other full-riggers. She has been called the last full-rigger afloat, and she deserves this honoured title, if one takes into consideration her world-spanning sailings. In 1935, there were, admittedly, a score of fully-rigged training ships and floating museums left in the world, besides the American Tusitala ex Inveruglas, which was laid up, and Calbuco ex Circe, registered in Chile, and Maipo, owned by a guano company in Peru, which are reported to have sailed with cargo at least occasionally. But Grace Harwar was the only one to carry on the traditions of world-wide commercial deep-water sailing to the very last."
Grace Harwar made her last voyage from Australia to the UK in 1935. On 16 July - 11 days after arrival in the UK - she was towed from London to Charlestown Firth of Forth, to be broken up.
A quote by Jung about exploring the Psyche.. I think it applied here too, at least it was in my head getting this view. Another trip to the river , its a long drive to this place and trying to time my original idea hasn't worked out in about just over a month.
Eight feet up a vertical rock wall to stand on a two foot square ledge with another sixty foot drop to the rocks and river below with a pack and heavy tripod. Thankfully the rocks have ledges that stick out and I could grab onto the trestle uprights to hold on once I got up there so this was from inside the trestle bridge, interestingly it was the last shot I took before I went to climb back down and leave.
Will I go back for the original shot... I don't know for now, maybe this is why I kept going back and just didn't know it. We'll see.

Escaping from the tomb and putting someone else in their place.
Rather than quoting Bible verses you're going to hear a whole lot today and half of you will discredit as cult utterances, I thought I'd just put this out instead: Angels, Heaven, and other aspects of our faith are concepts difficult to wrap one's head around, and right now we can't. So a lot of people dismiss them as petty imaginings and larger-than-life reflections of things we can see and touch. "Giant humans with bird wings? Haha how pagan."
Consider, just for a brief while, the implications of perhaps these being original concepts; our concepts and ideas little reflections that are missing pieces, and the only way those who saw angels or Heaven could describe them was through Earthly terms, resulting in outrageous-sounding descriptions filled with lions' heads, wheels within wheels, and a lot of gold when there simply was no way to utter the element that made their appearance unutterable. Plato, though not completely right, had hit on something with his Myth of the Cave, now you just need someone to guide you out of it...
