I think few will argue with starting with gulls. As my favorite quiz master, Tony Leukering, usually starts with, lets age this bird. With the length of time that gulls can take to gain adult plumage and, therefore, the shear number of possible plumages per species aging first in gulls really can make the difference. Our quiz bird shows all the classic plumage characteristics of a full adult bird including a clean gray mantle, adult wing coverts (at least greater and median as lessers are mostly covered), clean white flanks and a mostly white head and nape with a few sparse brown streaks on the nape. This bird shows no brownish tones or other juvenile characteristics especially in the wing coverts (which often give away age.) So, we’ve narrowed our answer to white-headed gulls in adult, non-breeding/ basic plumage.

Our bird has very dark black in the wing tips which narrows our answer even further, removing all the pale-primary gulls. This bird also has a very long primary projection and a small head which suggests one of the smaller large white-headed gulls like California, Mew, Ring-billed, or Thayer’s. If we look at the bill we can see enough to remove Ring-billed and probably California. However, lets look at the primary pattern, especially the underside of the right wing. We can see a great deal of black, way more than one would see in Thayer’s but not enough for California. So, we are only left with Mew Gull. We can see broad crescents on the wing coverts as well as the small bill and dark iris.

That wasn’t so hard, was it? I had very few answers to this quiz which may or may not be due to the fact that this is a gull. However, I hope people enjoyed the challenge.
