QuickTime H.264 4096x2304 playback on MacBook Pro.
I have no idea what playback fps is... anyone know how to get this info on QuickTime X?
9/28/2010: Image and color profile P6 of H.264 mp4 file encoded with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. The image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the file in QuickTime 7.6.8 on a Win7-64 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
When viewed in QuickTime the image appears pale and washed out with a similar color and luminance profile as displayed with RealPlayer SP (see previous slide P5).

Always goofing off! The shrieking owl on the walking stick was hand carved for me by an old friend who makes walking sticks out of hardwoods and elk horn. They are so cool. Jerry guarantees the quality of his walking sticks claiming that they are steardy enough to beat off a grizzly bear. I doubt it... He will refund the purchasing price of any walking stick broken in battle against a grizzly. "Go away, masquaw!"

9/30/2010: Image and color profile P17 of a source H.264 mp4 file prior to editing. The video image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the file in QuickTime 7.5.5 Pro on a Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
Changing transparency settings to "Straight Alpha" results in an improved image profile compared to the standard QuickTime and RealPlayer settings (slides P14-P16). There is little noticeable difference between the source file and EE4 mp4 output file when viewed in QuickTime Pro "Straight Alpha" mode (see slide P8). Therefore the loss of contrast is likely a result of player-specific codecs and color management.

Perpetual Motion of Ideological Affray

The work consists of a 24" iMac displaying, in random order, 40 quicktime movies made with images derived from my collection of newspaper clipped photos of protest situations. Each movie has a soundscape built from sounds of paper, scissors and rock.
The accompanying photo is of the Lord Howe Island woodhen - Gallirallus sylvestris - a flightless bird that evolved on a pacific island uninhabited by humans.
