Quartzite had no auto parts stores that where opened early enough, I had to leave by 6:00 AM or I wasn't going to make Tucson by 2:00 PM, so I hit the road. When I got on the freeway the fan stopped squealing and I thought I through my last fan belt leaving me with no fan and yesterday it was well over 100 degrees. Lucky for me there was a rain storm moving through and it made it a lot cooler. Also there wasn't a lot of hills. My phone started working last night so I called Cecelia to find me an auto parts store in Gila Bend. Soon I was on the phone with Chico from Napa and he had only 2 belts for me, but that will work.

I wasn't planning to do a shoot while visiting, so didn't have anything but my phone. It was such a beautiful morning, I couldn't resist.

Parker Creek, in Arizona's Sierra Ancha, has cut a double canyon through layers of cliff-forming quartzite and intruding diabase. This view of the south fork of the upper canyon shows the light-colored cliffs of the Troy Quartzite, at the top of the left canyon wall.

85/365: 26 March 2009 - Back to the rock collection. This is a piece of quartzite from the sea cliffs west of Tongue in the north west of Scotland. The geometric patterns aren't the rock itself, but colonies of lichen. These remarkable organisms are a symbiotic relationship between an alga - which photosynthesises and thus provides energy - and a fungus - which provides the infrastructure (and the many wonderful forms that lichen take). Neither partner can survive without the other. They are one of the oldest organisms on this planet and can live in very inhospitable environments.
Locality: Gila County, Arizona

Red quartzite sarcophagus, similar to Tutankhamen's. Carved images of Isis, Nephthys, Selkis and Neith at the corners protecting the deceased.
Port na h-Innse Bay, SW side of Eilean nan Ron.
The three islands of Eilean nan Ron are made up almost entirely of up to 500m of coarse red-brown conglomerate believed to be from the Devonian and contain clasts which include abundant Cambrian quartzites and Durness limestone. This suggests deposition by braided rivers from a north-westerly source.

That's an active rock glacier below the pyramid summit. The rock is all Cambrian age, Prospect Mt Quartzite
A complex range in itself, this picture displays 1 of Beinn Eighe's two Munro's, 2 of its four Munro Tops, and its single Corbett, Ruadh-stac Beag (the little brother of the Munro Ruadh-stac Mor...)
The most noticeable feature of the mountain is the vast quartzite scree slopes that cover large parts of its flanks - an incredible sight when lit by the sun.
