Rue Emile Zola is mainly made up of a row of colourful half-timbered houses dating from the 16th century. These buildings were rebuilt after the violent fire which broke out in the heart of the medieval town, destroying the main quarters of the town in 1524. Although very few buildings from the medieval period remain, this lane has retained this historical aspect and demonstrates an overview of what the town was like at the time of the famous "Champagne Fairs".
So this is the Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse (1875).
Located at Seal Rocks - just a little to the north of Sydney.
Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse stands on a dramatic headland east of Seal Rocks village. Completed in 1875, it is the first lighthouse designed by colonial architect James Barnet and one of only two towers in Australia with an external stairway.
It was originally built to guide ships along the rocky coastline to the north of Sydney, after a number of incidents, including the shipwrecking of the SS Catterthun and the SS Rainbow.
Below the lighthouse are the Lighthouse Keepers’ quarters and outbuildings that have been refurbished to offer holiday accommodation for visitors.

The Kent block is attached to its companion apartment building on Court St. by walkways with metal railings. Records indicate that this apartment building may have been built several years later than the actual Kent Block, although not later
than 1900. Although the front facade of the apartment block is faced with red brick like that of the Kent Block, the side walls are constructed of cream brick. There is a pressed metal cornice at the top of the building that features brackets, modillions, dentils, and swags. A brick corbelled frieze runs under the cornice. Two sets of two-story oriel bays decorate the upper stories. They are covered by pressed metal in a manner similar to those of the Kent Block. Windows are single light double hung sashes except for those between the bays. There are two round arched windows there that are decorated with segmentally arched lintels and stone sills. A stone belt course runs across the front facade of the building separating the first and upper floors. The first floor features simple entrances and windows.
Both the Kent Block and its companion apartment building housed many flats. The flats of the commercial block were called the LaVista Flats, while those on Court St. were known as the Court Street Flats. The businesses housed in first floor of the Kent Block itself included grocery stores until 1911 and the Janesville Floral Company until 1924 when they presumably moved to their new quarters south of this building. The building currently houses apartments and an office supply store.
2023 Photo 7/358 Day 317 of The Tooth and Day 183 of The Boo We call the area of living room carpet and wood floor nearest the big front windows the doglings’ “Winter Quarters” when the sun heats it up on winter mornings and afternoons. It’s a good place for our cairn terrier doggage to nap after a tough morning of hunting mice (Boo Boo, the black one) or destroying toilet paper rolls (Tooth Barkington, the blond one). ©2023 | jmhudson1.com

The Superintendent's Quarters at the United States Military Academy at West Point is the U.S. Army's equivalent to the White House in Washington, DC. Built in 1820, the structure had received numerous modifications, over the years and was in need of an overhaul and systems update.
While planning my next trip, I decided to revisit some pix taken in China in 2014. Here is one of Roof Tops in Shanglai from our hotel window as I "see" them.
Happy Textural Tuesday!

Once home to Healy's Pharmacy, this corner building at Massachusetts Avenue and 3rd Street, N.W. was built in 1890 by Julius Germuiller, a son of German immigrants.
This structure—long vacant and now surrounded by huge new buildings—is typical of hundreds of houses and commercial buildings in late 19th-century Washington that were built by this Washington-born German-American architect/builder, the son of German immigrants and parishioners at St. Mary's Church.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Ray Milefsky, we now know considerably more about Germuiller's life and career.
For several years, the mortar and pestle on the rooftop disappeared. It's good to see it has returned to the building.

BallinStadt – Hamburg/Veddel
Historical Center for Migration 1857–1918 and Memorial Park
From the 1850s to the early 1930s the ground's emigration halls were last homestead for some five million emigrants from various parts of Europe, waiting for their departure to the Americas. The BallinStadt museum was opened in 2007 and named after Albert Ballin (1857–1918), then director General of the Hamburg America Line. Originally built in 1901, the site's Swiss chalet style quarters provided shelter, lodging and/or entertainment for the emigrants. In 1934 the station was closed and demolished by the Nazis, but rebuilt true to original in the early 2000s. Today, the emigration halls accommodate an exhibition related to the emigrants, their living conditions and experiences during their journeys to and from Hamburg.

Pt. Loma Light. It was first lighted on March 23, 1891, replacing the Old Point Loma Lighthouse which is atop the 400 feet cliffs of Point Loma. Today the Keepers' Quarters house the Coast Guard officers who are fortunate to enjoy the prime oceanfront property.
“As we live and as we are, Simplicity, with a capital "S", is difficult to comprehend nowadays. We are no longer truly simple. We no longer live in simple terms or places. Life is a more complex struggle now. It is now valiant to be simple: a courageous thing to even want to be simple. It is a spiritual thing to comprehend what simplicity means.”
― Frank Lloyd Wright

Fulmars superficially resemble gulls, but are readily distinguished by their flight on stiff wings, and their tube noses.
A bird that is both lovely and quirky and also long-lived, living for up to 40 years.
Historically, the northern fulmar lived on the Isle of St Kilda, where it was extensively hunted. The species has now expanded its breeding range southwards to the coasts of England and northern France.
