Hạ Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular travel destination in Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Hạ Long City, Cẩm Phả town, and is a part of Vân Đồn District. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. Hạ Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bái Tử Long Bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà Island to the southwest. These larger zones share a similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate and cultural characters.
So we spent one night on the ship in Halong Bay - we woke up quite early thanks to the jet lag from California too perhaps. And we saw the whole sight getting brighter and brighter, very gradually.
The word "Halong" means "descending dragon" in Vietnamese language, due to these very particular shaped uninhabited limestone karsts. Do you see the dragons landing from the sky?
It is such a mysterious beautiful place... Although I'm not a huge fan of cruises normally, I loved the every single minute of the time we were in the bay.

So we took a cruise in the famous UNESCO Heritage Halong Bay. That is pretty much the only way to discover this wander of the world - well, at least in two days and one night.
Vietnam is known for its affordable pricing for many things from trasportation to food, but this cruise was a bit of an exception. And unfortunately the weather never cleared out after the whole trip. However on the second day the weather was somewhat better, sometimes we saw the sun coming out.
The cruise itself was really fantastic - full of peaceful retired people from all over the world. We thoroughly enjoyed its programme from morning tai chi session (obviously all cruises do that) to cooking class. They took us to a cave and a floating village where people actually live above water.
I know it's touristy, but food was very good, and we enjoyed the different exceitment from fast-paced Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city here. We had a wonderful experience overall.

Ha Long Bay is located within the Quang Ninh Province of Vietnam. Situated in the Gulf of Tonkin, the site includes some 1600 islands and islets forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars in an area of around 1,553 sq km. Because of their precipitous nature, most of the islands are uninhabited and relatively unaffected by human influence.
Ha Long Bay possesses a tremendous diversity of caves and other landforms which derive from the unusual geomorphological process of marine invaded tower karst. In recognition of its remarkable scenic quality, Ha Long Bay was inscribed as a UNESCO natural World Heritage site (1994) and the New7Wonders of Nature (2011).
