Wonderful display of Green-winged orchids (Anacamptis morio) at the Clattinger Farm. The colour of these attractive orchids varies markedly ranging from various shades and hues of pink, mauve and purple with purple flowers being dominant in the field. A much less frequent white variety, Anacamptis morio var. alba, is shown here on the left, but still preserves its green stripes on the wing sepals that forms the flower hood. The sun came out when we left the place (how typical), but on a positive side, colours look better when overcast. In this collage, I wanted to compare some colour variations, from white through to purple, seen on the day.
This genus of orchids has the spur (a hollow tube at the back of the flower that contains all the goodies for pollinators) is typically bent upwards (can be seen more clearly at the top of the florescence). Hence its name Anacamptis (‘anakampto in Greek means ‘bent back’). The epithet ‘morio’ (‘clown’ in Latin) refers to its stripy wings and spots, like clowns would have.

Interestingly enough these photos are put in the order that they were taken, but the first and third sky look more alike in colour, and the second and fourth sky look more alike in colour, I wonder why?

With recent windy and rainy weather, the autumn colours almost gone in the old arboretum. It was amazing to see this magnificent Japanese acer in full, pretty much intact, autumnal dress. Old Arboretum. Westonbirt Arboretum, South Gloucestershire, England.

Shot taken for Saturday Self Challenge , Skyscapes ! May the Fourth Be With You !
Well with only one and a bit days of something other than grey skies , Monday was the day to get out with the camera pointed upwards . Took about three dozen shots with various themes in the sky - challenge then is to choose one pic to post . Therefore , one is singled out and converted to a dramatic mono shot with clouds imploding and exploding - maybe because of all the stuff we are asking our skies to cope with . Just like plastics in the oceans the air now is suffering from , not only toxic gases being pumped skywards , it now has to cope with electronic pollutions - and wonders what all these signals bouncing around are doing to our brains !!
Think I might have missed a shot or two Wednesday as the lightening show in the depths of the night were quite spectacular , but as yet I have never got a lightening capture !!
However , there were still a number of not chosen shots , so a quadriptych can be seen in the first comment box --
top left -- A very high flyer
top right -- Is that a Luck Dragon like in The Never Ending Story flying through the air ?
bottom left -- It's like Piccadilly Circus up there , hope air traffic control are on the ball !!
bottom right -- Another high flyer diving into the clouds ( and the culprit can be seen !! )
