Visiting Southern Railway 'Q' Class No. 30541 emerges from the 440 metre long Bewdley Tunnel during Severn Valley Railway’s autumn steam gala on 19th September 2019.

The Q class was the last of Richard Maunsell’s loco designs. The intention was to produce a simple replacement for some of the elderly locos that were being used for light goods/mixed traffic work. They had a steam reverser, which made shunting a lot easier than on many other locos. Only 20 were built between 1938/39 and No. 30541, built in 1939, is the sole survivor.

I've only been to Western Australia on a few occasions and my coverage of the rail scene over there is sparse to say the least. I was in Kalgoorlie briefly in August 2004 and managed to catch a Saturday afternoon Koolyanobbing to Esperance export iron ore working departing the yard after reversal.

Motive power is a pair of former Westrail Q class EMD-powered locos (model JT46C) built by Clyde Engineering in Australia in 1997. By the time of this pic, the fomer state government owned Westrail had been sold to Australian Railroad Group, a 50/50 partnership between Genesee & Wyoming Australia and Wesfarmers, although again sold in 2006 to QR National.

A bit gloomy and uploaded mainly because I think this is the only image of have a loco carrying the G & W inspired Australia Western Railroad 'black swan' logo (AWR).

AWR came about as a result of the privatisation of the former state government owned Westrail business in Dec 2000, a 50/50 purchase by Genesee & Wyoming and Wesfarmers. The various businesses were re-branded Australian Railroad Group in 2002. AWR is still registered business, but it now owned by Queensland based freight operator Aurizon.

On 14 August 2004, Q312/Q314 arrive at West Kalgoorlie yard with a loaded iron ore train which will reverse and then head down the opposite track to the port at Esperance.

The 'Southern Mogul Preservation Society' who were the owners of 31618 found it a struggle to make much progress with the loco's restoration on the sidings at New Hythe so when the chance to move to the Kent and East Sussex Railway at Tenterden came, they gleefully accepted and the loco first steamed successfully in preservation there during 1974.

However, in the 1970s there was very little track on which to run the loco on the K&ESR so when the Bluebell Railway offered to accommodate 31618 in May 1977 the loco was taken the relative short distance to the Bluebell Railway and that move was a huge success for all parties and she remains based there. Commemerating the last Bluebell train run by BR. 18 March 2018 (17th March 1958).

A brilliant day with the Q class, a sharp frost in the morning with a bright sunrise. The sun returned late afternoon.
