Aspidites melanocephalus (Pythonidae) Pythons
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: A large snake with maximum length of 2.5 m, though 1.5 to 2 m more common. Head covered with shiny black scales; body a striped or brindled pattern in shades of black and gray brown, gold and cream. Juveniles more vividly marked. Females larger than males.
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia. Habitat: Open woodlands, shrub lands, outcrops, humid coastal forests, and seasonally-dry tropical woodlands. Not found in very arid regions. Found among rocks and loose debris.
DIET IN THE WILDt: birds, other reptiles; small mammals, especially rodents. Active at night.
ACADEMY DIET: Two rats every 2 weeks. (M Avila Academy biologist)
REPRODUCTION: Oviparous. Female guards them.
REMARKS: Like all pythons, a non-venomous species that kills by constriction. To save energy during the dry season when food and water are scarce, pythons reduce their body temperature. Can dig and live in burrows to escape daytime heat. Small, streamlined head and nonprotrusive eyes may be adaptations to entering burrows and hollows.

This lovely lady is a Stimsons Python Antaresia stimsoni. The Stimsons python is a relatively small python in comparison with other Australian python species.
The Stimsons natural distribution range would probably be the largest distribution range of any Australian python. Within this huge distribution range there are several recognized morphs. These morphs were probably the result of environmental differences e.g. habitat, prey and climate differences, over thousands of years.
Generally speaking the Stimsons python is well suited as a captive pet. The temperament of these pythons is quite placid and besides the odd exception they are normally amendable to handling.
Roxanne belongs to the neighbours across the road from my parents. Trev has had her for about 12 years now and in that time she has grown quite a bit!

Watching a bit of Monty Python during my lunch break. Composite of 2 exposures, hand held. My newer phone has spot metering so i was able to take one shot with the background in focus and exposed correctly and one with the PSP in the foreground to create a sort of "pseudo HDR". Fairly happy with it, but it looks a little bit "fake"
