One of the many highlights from my trip to Australia over Christmas were the various reptiles we saw. Aside from the small lizards and monitors, we saw 3 species of snake as well: Carpet Python, Tree Snake and Red-bellied Black.

We spotted this huge Carpet Python after hearing a branch snap while walking along a creek. It must have been about 2 metres long and wasn't bothered by us photographing it.

I will be uploading some more photos from my trip over the coming days and weeks so make sure you check back to see them!

#IMG_6580

I was roped into doing snake portraits this morning, a most enjoyable experience. This year old python was particularly endearing. Fun to photograph. Not an easy job, though. Probably 98% of the images are not sharp!!

Found this python climbing a tree in our yard.

This Childrens Python was relocated from someones backyard in Mount Isa in April 2014. Through sheer luck the same snake was found last night still in good condition. The markings on the neck were used to determine it was the same snake. It is good to see that a relocation was successful and the snake is still in good health almost 10 months on.

It also gave me the opportunity to try out my new lense, the Canon 24-70mm F/4 Antaresia childreni. Sybella Creek, Mount Isa, QLD.

Hatchling woma python. Tanami locality.

We spotted this Diamond python on the side of the road driving through Kangaroo Valley, NSW. What a beauty! So I got out of the car, lied down on the tarmac and crawled towards the snake, and then the python was just looking straight at me... what a thrill!

Python bivittatus

A healthy adult male that was found and captured crossing a road late at night in south Florida. Though most people associate pythons with Everglades National Park, this species continues to expand its range to the north and west in south Florida. This big male was found right on the periphery of the suburbs while driving home from field work.

Their diet consists mostly of small mammals, such as rodents, and sometimes reptiles, such as geckos and skinks. Prey is captured by holding onto a branch using the prehensile tail and striking out from an S-shaped position and constricting the prey. They often wrap around the base of small tree trunks facing down in an ambush position, waiting for ground mammals to prey upon. They position themselves next to pathways of small mammals which they detect with heat sensory pits in their jaw.

This pretty snake can reach lengths of 1.8 metres. Arboreal, it has a prehensile tail. It is bright green with a white or yellow vertebral line that is often broken. The posture they assume in repose is highly characteristic, completely rolled around a branch with the head resting on the body.

Straight out of the camera.

Much better on black or large please xx

A relatively slim body characterizes the green tree python. The long tail accounts for about 14% of the total length. The head is large and clearly defined from the neck.

Almost entirely living in trees, the Green tree python spends most of the day curled over the branches high in the trees with its head resting on its coils. These snakes use disruptive coloration, which is an excellent camouflage and effects near invisibility.

The green tree python lures its food by sitting very still on a branch and dangling its tail. Curious about the wiggling tail, the prey gets close enough for a strike.
