On one of this large development's many new houses. Probably not affordable for most people, unless with a forever mortgage. Even though that's the south side I'm surprised there's not a single window. iPhone 8+ photo.

puttings bram's christmas present to good use

For years I'd seen this thing mentioned on futurist pages on facebook. Out of the blue I decided to try putting one together to go with all the other small near-future builds I've made.

Its not 100% accurate to the real thing. The tracks I obviously couldn't get dead on. The scale is a little too big as well. I tried to come up with a design to mimic the barrel-framing-supports(?) on the M2. It ended up looking more like some kind of star wars blaster turret, but its the best I could do. Hey, maybe someone else can take a whack at it.

Putting on the finishing touches. Coming soon...

wife asking why Im taking pics of her feet

I haven't been able to upload photos in a while, so now that I finally can again I'm uploading old ones I took a while ago. So expect some random stuff from a month or two ago for the next few days!

I kinda liked how this photo came out originally, but my sister insisted on me putting a bunch of random effects on it while I was editing... so now it's kinda weird looking. :P And somehow Bloom looks way more overedited than Layla...?? Oh well.

Sorry for taking so long with these WinxWarrior14, euuugh. @___@ Stella and Flora are coming soon!!

Despite her gross hair (which I will never understand how people manage to tame...) I really like this doll. She's got such a pretty outfit, and I love her shimmery lipstick! Mine's hair keeps getting messier and messier though, especially in the front. I probably will try boil straightening it soon.

This was not a staged shot. It was purely a coincidence that two players had these balls, and on one hole they ended up in the cup one right after another.

Starling Notes:

1

Do starlings migrate?

Starlings use gardens all year round but in the winter our resident population is boosted by migrant birds from mainland Europe. Garden BirdWatch data reflects this with the number of gardens reporting starlings rapidly increasing from October onwards.

2

Starling murmurations

During the winter you may be lucky enough to see a starling murmuration. These flocks gather in the evening and perform amazing aerobatic displays before dropping into their favoured roost sites. Flocks provide safety in numbers for birds returning to roost as predators find it hard to target individual birds. In addition, they benefit from the warmth of other birds and the opportunity to exchange information.

3

Are starlings getting rarer?

The starling population has undergone a long-term population decline throughout Europe. In the UK this resulted in almost an 80 per cent population decrease between 1987 and 2012. The decline is thought to be linked to reduced feeding opportunities due to changing land use practices. It’s not all bad news however, as both recent Garden BirdWatch and the Breeding Bird Survey results show a slight upturn in numbers.

4

What do starlings eat?

During the breeding season, starlings rely on invertebrates, especially leatherjackets (the larvae of crane flies) taken from short grassland, including lawns. In the summer and autumn, they take more seeds and berries and this seasonal shift is matched by a lengthening of their intestine to cope with the increased plant material, which is harder to digest. They will readily use bird feeders throughout the year.

5

Why don’t some people like starlings?

Quite a few garden birdwatchers complain about starlings because they seem to clean out a feeding station in minutes. Starlings do this as they evolved to feed quickly in flocks, rather than because they are greedy. It’s not their fault but it can get expensive so if this is a problem, try providing food, especially fat products, in feeders that exclude larger birds.

6

Starling plumage

While starlings appear black at a distance, close up they have glossy green and purple iridescent plumage. In the breeding season, adults have yellow bills with different colour bases depending on their sex; in males this is blue and in females pink. Their winter plumage is duller with white spots and the bill is dark. Juveniles are dull brown in colour, often with a pale throat.

Smallest starling chicks put more effort into finding food

A difficult start in life is not necessarily a disadvantage.

Biologists have found that the smallest starling chicks learn behavioural strategies that produce fatter adults.

Starlings that struggle to compete for food in the nest grow up to forage more quickly and to put more effort into finding food – to the extent that they prefer to rummage through sand for hidden morsels rather than plumping for freely available food nearby.

A cost of the extra weight, though, is that the birds don’t fly as well as their advantaged peers, which may make them more vulnerable to predators.

This is the 14" I've been sloooowly putting together.

It's originally a ~2003 f4.6 Orion Optics (OO) Dobsonian.

I got OO to make an 'Ultra Grade' 1/10 PV f4 mirror, changing the focal length from 1600 to 1400mm. I cut about 170mm off the tube and repositioned the primary mirror.

I had a carbon fibre secondary spider made by TS optics in Germany (which cost more than I originally paid for the scope). I fitted the primary and secondary mirrors with Kendrick dew heaters. I also upgraded the focuser with a 2" Feathertouch. The focuser/secondary area is stiffened with a flocked aluminium sleeve, which also offsets the centre of balance, giving a slightly tighter turning circle. The final weight is 23kg.

It now has 100mm back focus, as my intention is to run the scope at f2.9 with a 0.73x reducer (TS or ASA). I think f2.9 may not be worth trying without upgrading to a carbon tube however. I also have a 5x Televue Powermate, which can take the focal ratio to f20, with a pixel resolution of <0.1" using a ZWO 290.

P.S. Ronseal does much more than what it says on the tin. I promise to buy some more genuine counterweights, just not this month.

Old, never made the cut.

But looking through my past work now, I realize that this photograph means more to me right now than it did back in July.

Everything about this symbolizes something for me, especially the blurry, wilted flowers.

How is everyone doing? You're all beautiful, I hope you know that.

Things have changed so much. I'm just trying to get some of the happy things of old back. Starting with photography.

And that's going to be easier to do now, since today I recieved my 35mm f/1.8 in the mail! Cut my finger pretty bad on the cardboard box (only me), but nevertheless I am so happy and simply cannot wait to try it out. But that will have to wait, because as of now I must get ready for a New Year's party with some of my dearest friends.

I hope you all had a fabulous 2012, and I'm so sorry I wasn't here to share some precious moments of it with you. But I will try my hardest to be around in this coming year.

2012 has had so many up's and down's. And I know, that's true for everyone and it's as cliche as it gets. But I'm not good at putting my personal thoughts out there in simple words, as if I were talking to the person next to me.

I don't know. I can't say that I wouldn't trade this year if I had the choice. So many changes. I now attend a public school, for one thing. I don't like change. I don't like having to adjust. And I definitely have had to this year.

If I say one thing, it's that 2012 has aged me. I have had to hold my chin high and be mature beyond my years in so many situations that I was so unfamiliar with. I will miss every second of my extendend childhood. It lasted much longer than most. And for this, I am truly grateful.

Happy new year!

My husband's music teacher tells him it takes about 20,000 hours of practice to play really well. I feel like photography is the same way. The more photos you take, the more you learn, and hopefully the more improvements you make.

Yet, trigger discipline.

I tried to start playing with the lighting a bit with these, specially with the face . It's much easier to work on figureine that a real living person.

This series started as I was putting away my Christmas decorations and thought "oh, some of these would make good photos to post next year". That turned into a shoot lasting three evenings and creating around 10 gigs of images.

This was an educational (if slightly grueling) process that helped me learn a bit more about still life, lighting and macro shooting.
