2-6-2 ZB Class No 7 'Spitfire' gets the 'push-and-pull' treatment on the Wroxham station turntable after arrival with the 15-inch gauge Bure Valley Railway's 13.00 service from Aylsham. @13.46
'Spitfire', turned out in 1951 British Railways green livery, was built by Penrhyn-based Winson Engineering and delivered to the BVR at Whitsun 1994. She was named, in June 1997, by Wing Commander Wyn Evans and Group Captain Barry Titchen, Station Commanders, of RAF Coltishall and RAF Neatishead. The naming recognised the role played by the Spitfire aircraft, which flew from many nearby bases during World War Two. 'Spitfire' returned to traffic for the 2022 season after a heavy overhaul.
The nine-mile BVR opened in 1990. It is laid on the abandoned trackbed of a standard gauge line completed in 1880 by the East Norfolk Railway. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1952, with freight traffic continuing until 1982. The track was lifted three years later. Moves to reopen the line, supported by the local authority, as a narrow gauge operation, began in 1989. A footpath runs alongside the entire length of the present line.
