Purple Gem (Barleria obtusa) is a popular garden feature plant because of its purples. This one struggled in dark shade until I removed a couple of large trees from my Gold Coast hinterland garden. The Purple Gem is now thriving.

Penelope looking up at the trees and clouds. Of course she had to lay on top of my new dwarf rhododendron (Purple Gem) that I just got!
We renovated a section of the rock garden next to the water feature in the spring of 2013 with a mix of perennials and low growing shrubs. Two large true heather plants (Calluna) died from lack of snow last winter, and it left a big hole to fill.
Callunas are typically hardy in Zones 5-7 but may thrive as far north as Zone 3 with adequate winter protection or snow cover. The heathers, which we knew were questionable for southern New Hampshire winters, were replaced with all Zone 4 plants.

Detail from a pic similar to 4881az. Colour has been edited in an attempt to get a better shade of purple than what came out of the camera. Purple is often a problem for me.

We added some Rhododendrons to the front garden a week ago, a dwarf hybrid called Monrovia Purple Gem. We planted them a week ago and, with the arrival of warm weather and rain, they broke into bloom.
