...but dark and rainy days can call for a higher ISO, in this case 10000 ISO.

And a fairly similar comparison photo from four years ago tomorrow, in first comment. I would much rather be out in the rain.

"Goldfinches are among the strictest vegetarians in the bird world, selecting an entirely vegetable diet and only inadvertently swallowing an occasional insect."

The bird on the left almost missed the landing, while the unrelated goldfinch (Spinus tristis), right, seemed to observe.

The young bird with uncertain footing most probably is a young cowbird.

With slight curves.

This or one of the other wild rabbits or hares ate my chives.

These are hares:

“Hares and jackrabbits are mammals belonging to the genus Lepus. They are herbivores, and live solitarily or in pairs. They nest in slight depressions called forms, and their young are able to fend for themselves shortly after birth.”

~Wikipedia

We’ve watched adult hares make slight depressions in the half-barrels on the deck, and presto: A fully furred tiny rabbit!

A quintessential, but young wet robin perches on a popular perch in rain and sprinkles. Not sure why the perch seems popular with small and large birds, raptors included.

DSC05887_DxO

At sunset, with the last hint of light, this tiny migratory male sparkled. The evening looked darker than this, hence the ISO 12800. The DxO PureRAW 3 software helped to remove most of the noise.

I love these feisty tiny creatures flying so far north. Male Rufous Hummingbird, (Selasphorus rufus), native to southern Mexico.

NB. Last January 2022 I asked for help and a Flickr support hero removed my account from the Explore algorithm. I feel more sincere and in the moment.

A male Rufous Hummingbird perches, pausing from sipping from fresh nearby hummingbird sugar water.

Just before I took this, a bald eagle swooped down into the back yard to pick up a bird or a duck. I didn't see what it captured, but we see it fairly often; just not in time to photograph it.

“The Rufous Hummingbird makes one of the longest migratory journeys of any bird in the world, as measured by body size,” states Cornell’s allaboutbirds.org. This wee bird has migrated from Mexico to northwest Washington state a month or so early. And I assume will head further north before turning to head back south.

"...meaning is self-determined. Meaning needs no one to react to the work you make. It needs no likes or comments. It doesn’t need the work to go well, though it rejoices when it does, and finds new direction there as much as it does in the failures and missteps. Meaning survives the melancholy and often requires it. Meaning pushes us forward. Sometimes into joy."

One of the feistiest hummingbirds in North America, states Cornell's allaboutbirds.org site. Weighing less than a golfball, and to me they seem almost the same size.

A joy to see. Most other birds seem to be scarce while an eagle pair patrol our back forty.

A young hare pauses in chewing grass to check for threats.

Another bird (female hummingbird) on a stick. An Anna’s, perhaps.

Most hummingbirds seem to like that tiny stick that stands in front of rhododendron bushes, at least many seem to take turns perching there in the evening.

My camera reads 6:40pm, but I thought it was 7:40pm, with f/6.7, 850mm, 1/2000, IS0 5000, and spot metering.

Thanks for looking.

Another image that was completely reprocessed by integrating PureRaw3 into the workflow. This time I have furthermore refrained from HDR-processing. I am even more impressed with the results.

We did not plant these vivid non-native blooms; previous home owner did. These are deciduous perennials that grow from basal underground corms in a corner safe from the strong southwest winds. They have not spread.

Hummingbirds enjoy these blooms, but chose not to appear while I tried to hide beneath a tree at about 8:30 pm.

Love these birds.

To be honest, that's more than a re-edit. It's completely reprocessed by integrating PureRaw3 into the workflow. I am quite impressed with the results.

with some photos it's a real pleasure: touch them again and carefully rework them, without changing the content...

Geschafft!
