A closeup of the pumpkin that Steve carved for us. Since Evan’s costume was a (Minecraft) dragon, we decided to do a dragon on the pumpkin this year. I found a fairly simple design on the internet, and Steve added a knight, since our pumpkin was more horizontal than vertical. A lot of the crayon that he used to draw the design wouldn't come off after, but I didn't mind it.
Evan drew on his little pumpkin with Sharpie almost immediately after we brought it home, but since I suggested he grab it for pictures, he added a little more that day.

Last stage, shaving off the skin to make details in all of the rectangles. Tried to make it as random as possible; I pretended I was designing little areas/cities on the globe. When I ran out of ideas I started abstracting flag designs or alphanumeric characters or simple objects.
All the credit goes to Noel Dickover of fantasypumpkins.com for putting up a great tutorial on carving the Death Star.
