Amzi Lorenzo Barber and John Brisbane Walker (editor - publisher of Cosmopolitan magazine) registered the Locomobile Company at Watertown, Massachusetts in 1899. With the purchase of plans for an early steam-powered vehicle produced by Francis and Freelan Stanley for a price of $ 250,000. At the time, one car had been built, and 199 more had been ordered. Walker went on to found Mobile Company of America building Mobiles and Walker Electric, while Barber relocated Locomobile to Bridgeport, Connecticut appointing the Stanley twins as General Managers. In 1902 the Stanley twins left the company to form the Stanley Motor Carriage Company and became Locomobiles biggest rivals.
The early Locomobile Steam car were criticised as being finicky to operate, prone to kerosene fires, had small water tanks and took time to raise steam, prompting writer Rudyard Kipling to describe them as a Nickel plated fraud. Initially, they were offered with a single body style only, an inexpensive runabout priced at $ 600. Never-the-less they proved popular with over 4,000 built between 1899-1902. By 1901 Locomobile offered seven body styles By now, the car had improved boilers and a new water pump
By 1902 Locomobile had started experimenting with internal combustion engines. This encouraged the firm to drop steam vehicles the following year, selling the Stanley brothers back their rights for $20,000. Locomobile remained independent until 1922 when purchased by Durrant Motors who continued to use the Locomobile name for its top of the line models until 1929

The Albany Pump Station, originally the Quackenbush Pumping Station of the Albany Water Works, is located in Quackenbush Square on Broadway in the city of Albany, New York, United States. It is a large brick building constructed in the 1870s and expanded later in the century.
It was built to pump municipal water from the nearby Hudson River, and continued in that use for 60 years. In 1983 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it has been partly converted into a popular local restaurant and brewpub, a reuse that drew an award from the Preservation League of New York State.[2] The beers have also received awards at the World Beer Cup and at the Great American Beer Festival. Another area of the building serves as the city of Albany's visitor center.
