Pulp-type is image making technique that relies solely on handmade paper pulp and results in works that resembles monotypes or woodcuts. It’s a printerly style of pulp painting.
May Babcock instructed on how to correctly beat and color pulp for pulp-typing. Students carved woodblocks, inked them, and cast wet paper pulp into the woodcut. This special technique resulted in a variety of detailed, embossed prints.

The window of a pulp fiction bookstore I reeeeeeally wanted to go to in San Francisco... that was tragically closed the day we were there. It's probably for the best-- I don't think I could have afforded for them to be open.
This is Fernando Cano ,owner of our 2nd farm, pulping his beans on a basic set up typical of what we saw. The cherry feeds through from above, the skin is hulled and spat out the back and Fernando then runs the beans through a screen to catch unhulled cherry or detritus.
Beans then fall straight through into the tanks where they are washed to remove muscilage.
