Bus on Shoulder allows authorized buses to use the highway shoulder when traffic drops below 35 miles per hour. Our new Bus on Shoulder Pilot Project will operate in the north and southbound directions of I-5 between I-205 and Elligsen Road in Wilsonville.

Dani Kaufmann grew up in Chile. He was studying at Hebrew University when Pinochet seized power in a coup in 1973, and elected not to return, ending up instead at Harvard, where he eventually earned a PhD in economics. His next stop was the World Bank, where he worked on Africa and then, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the transition to capitalism in what used to be the Warsaw Pact states.

By the time Kaufmann returned to World Bank headquarters in Washington, he knew that his life's project would be to study corruption and its opposite, good governance, two themes he knew well from his work in Africa and the former Soviet Union, and viscerally from his Latin American roots.

But as Kaufmann looked further into rent-seeking around the world, the ways that it slowed economic development, and how it could be stopped, he discovered something that surprised him. The naked forms of corruption that development organizations and NGOs agonized over most-bribes demanded by government officials with coercive power, like policemen, or required for ordinary state services, like teaching, or even despots extracting their nation's wealth and sending it to numbered Swiss bank accounts-were only part of the story. About $1 trillion, by Kaufmann's estimate, was paid in outright bribes around the world every year.

But orders of magnitude more money was being made thanks to what he dubbed "legal corruption":

"The cost to society of bribing a bureaucrat to obtain a permit to operate a small firm pales in comparison with, say, a telecommunications conglomerate that corrupts a politician to shape the rules of the game granting it monopolistic rights, or an investment bank influencing the regulatory and oversight regime governing it."

somedays, I feel argumentative and so... I push.

And then there was one. One more bus, then it was time to go home. When Queens Road first fell to Go-Ahead, a notable early sight was First's batch of 14 Volvo B5LHs sporting Go-Ahead fleetnames before slowly being refurbished into version 1 of Go North West's blue, grey and orange livery... eventually superseded by Stenning's variant when they decided 'We Are Buzz' wasn't doing a good enough job with it.

Then, Queens Road fell again, this time to Stagecoach under Tranche 2 of the Bee Network. With the garage came it's entire allocation of Volvo B5LHs, renumbered in short order under the Stagecoach system, reallocated to Oldham, and slowly, but surely refurbished into Bee Network standard livery. 13173 here appears to be one of the newest examples in fleet livery, bearing no adverts, having hardly kicked up any dirt, and seemingly having no Flickr photos of this repaint. It made the agonising five-or-so minute wait for it to pull away worth it.

And that's it. We're done with our Manchester spots. Now to take a heavily delayed train back to Hull and arrive in time for 11PM due to the usual chicanery of Transpennine Express. So... Manchester in review? I would love, absolutely love to see more of the local bus scene and catch up on more that I'd missed out on. But this is all, what I coined, a nice 'even spread' of vehicles, some of which most likely won't be here next time. They do things differently down in Manchester, y'know. I was in you, Manchester, and I will be back at some point. Hopefully in warmer weather.

My final photo from the Manchester trip, Stagecoach Manchester's 13173, a 2011 Volvo B5LH Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 new to First Manchester as their 39219 before later becoming Go North West's 3013, is seen pulling out along Oldham Street on, fittingly, an 84 service to Oldham.

It is basically an annual 3-day sports bonanza that attracts millions of travellers almost every year. The main events held here includes dog race, camel race, horse dance, tractor race and a tug-of-war. The main highlight of the Olympics is the bullock cart race, for which rewards and the stakes and are the highest. There are some other dare devil competitions that takes place like riding a bicycle ringed with a burning tyre, lifting bicycles and pulling cars with teeth and so forth.
