For the Smile on Saturday challenge: "Creative With Seashells."

Puka shells are naturally occurring bead-like shells found on the beaches of Hawaii or other places. Each bead is the beach-worn apex of a cone snail. Such shells are often strung as necklaces, known as puka shell necklaces. Puka is the Hawaiian word for "hole" and refers to the naturally occurring hole in the middle of these rounded and worn shell fragments. The many contemporary "puka shell necklaces" are not made from cone shells, but from other similar shells, In addition, some strings of beads are currently sold that are made from cone shells, but the holes in the beads in these necklaces were not formed by natural processes.

'It's Lennon, like John,' he told me after I took a few photos and asked for his name. Lennon had never heard of Flickr, although he was somewhat familiar with Facebook, but he was willing to participate in the 100 strangers project nonetheless.

I noticed Lennon when pulling into the Hookipa Beach parking lot, a popular surfing park located on Maui's north shore. He was standing by himself watching the surfers when I walked over and learned he grew up on the Big Island, which, with all he volcano activity is still growing, he told me. Work there is scarce, however, so he moved to Oahu before finally making his way to Maui, his dream destination.

When he's not working at the Maui airport, Lennon spends his time surfing @ the beach.

I gave Lennon my card a told him I’d send a few shots if he contacted me, and he said he might borrow his girlfriend’s computer to do so. After watching him in action however, I don’t expect to hear from Lennon anytime soon. It’s clear this man has everything he wants.

Thank you Lennon, for your willingness to particpate.

This picture is #22 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

I don't know if the bone under the shell is getting colonized with algae the same color as the shell, or if somehow the outer layer is repairing itself. Turtle biologists??

I couldn't resist these absolutely gorgeous yummy croheted magnets. I have purchased them from Etsy.
