May I have your attention...please?

This tiny Mycena mushroom suffers from glossophobia, the fear of public speaking (from the Greek for 'tongue fear'). A serious lack of confidence has virtually crippled him in the past, but with with preparation, practice and positive thinking (and beta-blockers don't hurt!) he can cope with standing up in front of an unruly group.

i had the pleasure of returning to give a talk about my photography to the wonderful members of TPS.

thanks for such a wonderful reception and of course giving me a big thumbs up for my FDT shot :)

The other day I realized that I've posted very few people shots this year. So here's my pal Madonna, earlier this month, giving a talk at the Jasper Cultural Centre in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. Her topic: A Survey of Some Not-to-Be-Trifled-With Women of the Victorian Era. Featured on the projection screen behind her, the Avenging Angel herself, Florence Nightingale. Note that Mado is in semi-Victorian garb - there is always a strong element of theatre in her presentations.

I was rolling video from a tripod while hand holding for stills, so my concentration on her content wasn't all that great, but I came away with a greater appreciation not just for what these women accomplished, but - especially - for their struggles to overcome typecasting and roles assigned them by the dominant males of the day. Simple things that we take for granted today, such as universal suffrage or acceptance in the professional world, were denied to women everywhere and fought over for decades. It's a history worth knowing - but it sure wasn't taught in school when I was a kid (1950s-'60s), and I'm sure it isn't taught today. As for what is being taught today, if anything... don't get me started!

The lighting wasn't great, so I just improvised and got what I could out of it.

Starting tomorrow, a new set of transition season wildlife, with a few landscapes in the mix.

I facilitated two LGBTQ presentations at Rochester Insititute of Technology (RIT) this past Saturday. The experience was a lot of fun and the attendees (new students) were absolutely amazing!

I'm filled with optimism and positive feelings about the future. And filled with gratitude for these life-touching and life-changing opportunities to connect, share, discuss, learn, grow, open hearts and minds and make new friends along the way.

This photo was taken during an lgbt presentation for a group of students working toward becoming social workers. Being a social worker isn't an easy job and it was a honor to present to and have a conversation with these bright, smart people who will be making a positive difference in the lives of countless others.

I'm so grateful for these opportunities to get out, connect, share, discuss, learn, open hearts and minds and make new friends along the way! 😊

Glossophobia - The Fear of Public Speaking (What People Fear More Than Death)

This is my entry for #BioCup2019 I am subverting the theme of "Scary Monsters" by going with a more unconventional fear. I tried my best to convey the nervous speaker in front of a crowd, so hopefully it comes across.

As long as i can remember, public speaking has ranked highly among life experiences that people fear. I've never had a problem with speaking in front of people, perhaps because I started at an early age.

This photo was taken during a SafeZone Training I was co-facilitating at a suburban library near the Rochester, NY area. My co-presenter and I banter and make the presentation fun and entertaining for the attendees.

Kerttu, photographed in Suvilahti, Helsinki during the Maailman kylässä (World Village) Festival in Spring 2025. We met during an open mic event focused on the war in Ukraine.

A platform where voices rose in solidarity, grief, hope, and resistance.

Her yellow sweater and blue raincoat, echoing the colors of the Ukrainian flag, stood out gently yet powerfully in the crowd.

Kerttu’s presence reminded me that visual language and political expression can be as simple and moving as color, smile, and willingness to stand with others.

It was fun (and hard work) to photograph the WE Day event. I can tell you that I have a renewed respect for event and wedding photographers EVERYWHERE! It was exciting to be part of the something big like WE Day - But oh! The weight of a press pass was a huge surprise to me!

I spoke at PhotoPlus Expo 2013 on the Sony stage each day of the Expo.

My presentation was titled: Mobile Photography: A World of Possibilities. I spoke about my own traditional client workflow and how I conceptualize the places I photograph as well as how I merge that with client expectations. And then I spoke about how I have been able to incorporate my love for mobile photography with my client workflow using the Sony QX100.

The panel I was on was titled: Disruptive Technology which covered photography and new media and included Rick Smolan: a former Time, Life, and National Geographic photographer, best known as the creator of the “Day in the Life” book series; Matt Kloskowski: the full-time Director of Education for Kelby Media Group and Editor-in-Chief of Lightroom Magazine; Brian Smith: a Pulitzer Prize winning celebrity portrait photographer; and Alex Garcia: whose time at the Chicago Tribune as a photographer has earned him many accolades and awards deeming him “one of the world’s best photojournalists” by HarperCollins.

It was open mic night at Equal Grounds Coffee House in Rochester, NY for "The Good, the Bad and the Funny" - an annual event for transgender and gender variant people to speak about whatever's in their mind. I took the opportunity to chat with the audience, allowing them to ask me anything... and they most certainly did!

You kind of get a feel for how tall I am here. That's a sign language interpreter to my left on stage. I had a lot of fun joking with people and answering questions.

One guy in the far back told me I was a "Gothic Goddess". Wow! What a beautiful compliment! 😊 I was so grateful for his kind words and really enjoyed conversing with the handful of people who were brave enough to chat with me, the mighty Gothic Goddess of Roc Pride!

This particular Thursday was also the kick-off for Rochester Pride.

Not the best photo of my face. I was talking and don't remember what I was saying in this moment, but it made for kind of an odd looking facial expression.

The pic is a little blurry, but I loved the way my legs looked in it and it's the only photo I was able to find of me that evening, from one of the most special audience members - my loving mother. I love you Mom! ❤️

Public speaking is the #1 fear of Americans, even higher than death. Public speaking ranks as a top fear amongst most people. It's usually right behind "getting eaten by a shark" or "falling off a skyscraper". But, actually, it is an art which can be cultivated by learning necessary skills.
