A discarded working paper from a WEA Day School, Cambridge by Dr Henry Tam.

Between 2003 and 2010, Dr Henry Tam had the opportunity as the UK Government’s Head of Civil Renewal to develop ‘Together We Can’, an action learning programme to study and promote cooperative practices in diverse institutional contexts. Then from 2011 to 2015, as the Director of Cambridge University’s Forum for Youth Participation & Democracy, I further explored the findings of ‘Together We Can’ with scholars and practitioners from across the world.

What emerged was a model with nine key elements – the extent to which each of these is realised serves as an indicator of how effective an organisation operates with collaborative leadership. The model has been named ‘synetopia’: a word that means ‘the cooperative place’ and is also an acronym made up of the first letter of each of the nine elements

Completely over-the-top approach to policing a peaceful demonstration.

These signs are all the city at the moment. It is an initiative started by a group of young activists. The problem is, we don't really get water in Sarajevo. For the past years, we have had 'reductions' which means that the water cuts off every night at around 11 pm until 6 am. That is the government's way to reduce the waste from leaking, as the infrastructure is collapsing. But lately, things have gotten much worse. They have introduced 'daily reductions' which means that we either have water without enough pressure to use, or not at all. This lasts from around 11 am to 3 pm, and we get some until 11 pm when it cuts off for the night again. Unfortunately, there is enough money to fix the problem, but for a long time, there was a power struggle within one of the ruling parties as to who the tender should be granted to in order to fix the water problems. Now there are many excuses, and people are reaching the limits of their patience.

From today's strike.

Will get back to those I've missed later tonight. Super busy I am.

As an accounting student, recent graduate or a professional with existing, current or no Government working experience, a role within the Australian Government accounting and finance departments is a great way to make your mark, build professional skills and contribute to key Government priorities. The Australian Government are active in seeking talented individuals who are open minded to possibilities, such as economists, accountants, financial analysts, as well as a host of other occupations, including public policy, administration and social sciences.

One of the first orders of obtaining a position within the Australian Government is completing a professional and effective, cover letter, resume and key selection criteria that will open the door to interviews and job offers. Writing an application for the accounting and finance sectors can bring a wide set of challenges; namely, choosing what professional and educational statistics to include or leave out and figuring out how to produce a resume and responses to the key selection criteria that highlight your skills and talents. When sending through your application, it is imperative to ensure that you represent yourself in the best possible light. To ensure that your application is well received, it is important to focus on the key elements of the position description and link them to your responses to the key selection criteria, as well as within your cover letter, and resume.

Each industry and profession presents unique resume writing challenges, and the accounting and finance sector is no different. If you are interested in pursuing a career within the Australian Government, it is important to highlight your success factors, including quantitative statistics to support achievements, versatility and diversity, skills such as accounting procedures or financial analysis functions that you perform routinely, in addition to technical skills and qualifications. Documenting these capabilities will illustrate the breadth and depth of your experience and highlight why you will be a valuable Australian Government employee. If you are seeking to move into a new accounting or finance department, progress into a leadership position, or are simply starting out your career with the Australian Government, the team at Public Service Resumes will identify the transferrable skills and experiences that are relevant in order to demonstrate your full potential and success.

Back to the strike, not the police march (too colourful to be the coppers).

Don't know what's going on with Flickr today, but lots of pictures in your streams are not loading. Will get back to you soon...

Just walk a little bit faster

The Parkland Walk is a nature reserve and footway along the line of a former railway track, on which the last trains ran in 1970.

It runs uphill from Finsbury Park to Muswell Hill, and on to Alexandra Palace.

Yes the coppers were doing their own thing yesterday, their own march. They're not allowed to strike, so over 20,000 off-duty ones from across the country came down to London to show their displeasure with cuts and the privatisation of the forces. The latter is what really frightens me. That goes for the prisons as well. The thought of it is so utterly dystopian. You might think a few are out of control now, just wait till they're no longer public servants...

Couldn't make the May Day protests today, but here's a shot from the public sector strike last November 30. Anyhow, I think Paris, Madrid and New York are the places to be today.

As George Monbiot tweeted this morning, 'A merry May Day to you all. May your rebellions be fruitful.'

Australia boasts outstanding police and emergency services, made up of extremely dedicated, caring and talented individuals. Law enforcement plays a large role in not only responding to emergencies but also to maintaining the safety and welfare of all Australian residents. The comradery, life skills and rewards of serving in the police force or part of an emergency services team cannot be underestimated, but be prepared to work hard knowing that the hard work really pays off and is worth the effort.

To be a member of the Australian Federal Police force or an emergency team, for any state or territory in Australia, is a noble and sought after role. It has a large and diverse workforce and serves a population of close to 24,000,000. Choose this as your life career and make a difference! Included in this category are role titles such as Deputy Chief Officer Operations, Driver Specialist, Fire Fighter, Officer Emergency Management and Protective Service Officers.

If you want a job among this outstanding group of people, you will need to make an excellent impression on the selection panel members to be considered worthy of the role you are applying for. That being the case your cover letter, resume and if required, key selection criteria responses need to showcase your talents, desire and level of commitment to the role you trying to land. Utilise the talents of Public Service Resumes team to prepare well-polished documents for your submission.

Your Resume must captivate the reader, communicating clearly your career outlook, qualifications, skills and previous experience. If you are hoping to change careers and break into the police force or emergency services, your transferable skills need to be relevant to the particular role you are applying for, rather than outlining every single job you have held in the past. The resume likewise needs to be the correct length, not too short, short changing yourself, and not too long, making for a boring read that will not be finished. Your Public Service Resume writer will determine what should and should not be included, tailoring your resume to the exact role you wish to apply for.

These lads have time travelled from the year 1984 to lend a hand to their fellow strikers. Despite the jet lag, they were as friendly as can be, but we would expect no less from a Durham mining village.

I was covering the public sector strike in London on Wednesday and shot a fair bit of material, but my Flickr feed seems in danger of becoming just protest material, I really need to shoot some other stuff. Anyway, I just liked this one enough to put it up.

Last shot from the May 10 strike. Will change the theme tomorrow.

Report of Deputation at the Housing Scrutiny Panel of Haringey Council, 30 July 2024.

Our 3 minute presentation starts at 3 mins 0 secs in this video:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg6ZIIxNFUI&t=2632s

We said we were shocked to hear that all 80 Haringey Council housing blocks of five storeys and above have Life Critical fire safety defects:

•46 blocks have combustible external wall systems

•80 blocks have defective fire doors and/or compartmentation defects.

Further details of defective Fire risk Assessments were given, along with detail of the test report on combustible external panels.

We explained that Council policy is that Haringey’s combustible window panels should be replaced on the normal timescale of its window replacement programme – with an industry standard of 30 year replacement – and management certainly did not disagree.

We said that with combustible panels, cost-cutting policies, outsourcing, and complacent management, all the elements for a major fire disaster are in place. On this, management and the Cabinet Member had no comment to make.

The Panel meeting had on its agenda a Fire Safety report which made NO mention of Life Critical Fire Safety defects.

Management commented on the deputation, and management and the Cabinet Member (Sarah Williams) responded to questions from Councillors on the Fire Safety Report, without ever once using the word combustible, and without ever once using the words Life Critical Fire Safety defects.

The Scrutiny Panel Chair (Alex Worrell) and the Panel members asked good questions throughout, and the Panel has now written to Cllr Williams asking for full detail of the fire remediation actions carried out by the Council since Grenfell.

So this was a difficult but an ultimately valuable meeting.

Had enough of Dave & the Bullingdon Boys yet?

Today is local council elections across Britain. Can't get rid of Dave just yet, but today's a way to send some sort of warning to the ConDem HQ. Doesn't look good here in London though. Also really interested to see what happens in Glasgow. Can the SNP wrestle Glasgow from Labour?

And did anyone catch the 3 hour marathon French presidential debate? Now that's how it should be done.
