Brilliant to discover this striking portrait detail of handsome Nick Bain @bainser from our lovely #psychedelicshoot 5 years ago. It was such a great shoot, and the colours worked out brilliantly - these hues are exactly as they came out of the camera.
This was achieved with:
4 long softboxes with gels standing vertical just out of sight of the camera -
2 either side a bit behind the model pointing forward at a 45 degree angle
2 either side a bit in front of the model pointing back at a 45 degree angle
Max light intensity wherever possible.

It was such a great shoot, Alexios was amazing in front of the camera, and the colours just popped - so these colours are as they were in the studio.

He’s currently in Oklahoma in the West End transfer, a brilliant gutsy reinvention of the original Rogers & Hammerstein musical which blew me away when I saw it at the Young Vic.

It’s a breathtaking production directed by Phelim McDermott, and @theofficialzacharyjames has the most extraordinary stage presence. No surprise he’s a GRAMMY® Award Winner, and BroadwayWorld’s Vocalist of the Decade.

My #psychedelicportrait of phenomenal composer Raymond Yiu, who is celebrating a big milestone birthday today! Raymond is writing a violin concerto for Esther Yoo to be premiered in 2024 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In the meanwhile check out the haunting recording of his requiem The World Was Once all Miracle.
This was such a brilliant easygoing shoot, and must confess I’m thrilled with the lighting - the colours are untouched and exactly as they were in the studio.

Wonderful #psychedelicportrait shoot and great conversation with Canadian production designer Michael Levine whose work is extraordinarily spare and pithy. So beautiful! Turns out we knew loads of people in common in the early 1980s. Michael has worked internationally in Opera, Dance and Theatre for the past forty years - most recently on Madam Butterfly for Bregenz Festival; Turandot Amsterdam; Peter Grimes for Royal Opera, Paris Opera, Teatro Real.

My official #psychedelicportrait celebrating the phenomenal and delightful Jonathan Blake - pioneering LGBTQ+ activist and one of the UK’s longest survivors with HIV. Jonathan is the inspiration for the character played by actor Dominic West In the movie Pride! (about Lesbians and Gays Support The Miners). We have known each other for decades from LGBT community events in the early eighties.

Paul (in next post) is an attorney and retired administrative law judge … although when I asked him how to describe his profession he quipped that he’d prefer to leave this planet as a "noteworthy potter” if only he could muster the energy to retrain between bouts of hiking, holidaying and daydreaming ;-)
Glen(in this post) is enjoying his soft retirement from his architectural practice, celebrating a lifelong penchant for design and creating, and pursuing bouts of hiking, holidaying and daydreaming with his husband ;-)

Sometimes it takes too many damn hours to get the colours right for a #psychedelicportrait shoot and I just lose it!
I always want things to be perfect for a shoot so I prepare all the tech the night before. Once the lighting has been set up I perch in the sitter’s chair with a remote control in my hand, acting as crash test dummy for the sitter - testing how the colours are interacting across my face. It’s an endless cycle of snapping selfies, dashing across to the camera to review the shots, groaning with frustration at the lousy results, tweaking the lights, and slumping back into the chair for yet more selfies… Eventually it all falls into place and I stumble off to bed.
I start out all sugar-and-spice, flashing sweet smizes for the camera, but I quickly lose patience…. The other night at 3am when things really weren’t going to plan and I was keeling over with exhaustion, this is what happened!!
